I ran Boston last year (got cut this year by the 5 minutes over qualifying buzz-saw but will be 100% back next year) - the advice I give to people who ask is that the course "isn't flat". My takeaway from that day was how little of the course is flat - it seemed I was running up a gradual uphill/downhill the whole way. Over 54% of the course is running up or down a slope of 1%. While that might not be much, over 26 miles, it definitely adds up and definitely left me punchless after Heartbreak Hill.

I sub3 my first Boston my strategy was simple go 85% the first 1-19 mile then easy up on the hills after mi 22 it’s all base on effort and drive I did 2:59:55 - every time I felt some cramping I slowed down a bit especially after mi 18 then at mi 21 ur back in control etc

If it's not tough enough, you could always try the Mt Washington 10K in June. It has a 4,650 feet vertical climb. The Mount Washington Marathon is downhill.

The classic route, Athens Greece, has more hills and elevation gain. Great video as always ❤

By the time i reached the summit of HB Hill, my quads were on fire, thanks to the downhills. Will now start Quad weight training to prepare for April 2025.

My home marathon course in Akron, OH is 1200 feet of elevation gain. That's a lot of elevation.

I mostly hike, but with goals of eventually doing trail marathons and ultras, and it's always fun to see the elevation gains on various courses.

Interesting. My first road marathon was Sydney 🇦🇺 2023. 1,100+ feet elevation gain. Appears we keep good company as a World Major candidate.

I recently did a sub3 in Boston went out 85% the first 18m then I knew those next a few miles were going to be the toughest, so yes mine was def strategy that I knew after mi 18 was going to go alot slower in the mid 7’s still mange to get sub3 - my 4th marathon hopefully many more. 😮Official time 2:59:55 just unreal . If you trained right you should be able to truest urself .

I ran it and it is crazy hard. It beats your leg up on the way down then when your out of gas at the end they hit you hard. Put me in the hospital from dehydration and I was a 2.40 minute marathon runner. Its all those women at the half way point that pump you up then you go to fast before hills

NYC Marathon way more hilly and challenging than Boston. I'll take one hill at the end of the race over running over many bridges any day.

With 1370 feet of gain the Atlanta Marathon is much hillier than Boston and even more hilly than San Fran. It's a fun course but if you want the experience of feeling like you're always running up hill, come to Atlanta. I hope someday to qualify for Boston, and this was a great informational/ instructional vid. The good news is that since I live in Atlanta, and I tend to run up hills on tired legs a lot. Also Atlanta has some awesome trails.

your voice says one thing [Boston marathon], but the crushing sound of your feet on that side trail say something else [go run a trail marathon].

I completely disagree, the entire course is hilly, almost from the get go. And when it’s hot you feel every single one. I love her but I don’t agree with her

I think the only way one would find Boston to be a tough, hilly course, is if you did no training on hills. Before my Boston marathon a long time ago, we were training in Seattle, which truly is hilly. We found the Boston hills to be relatively easy, even though they are late in the race. As Coach Morgan says, get out and do some hills, especially late in your training runs.

You are lying, I am telling you first hand. The net downhill kills your quads making the hills even harder.

You are brave, I haven't been on a plane since 9/11. Even if I qualify for Boston I couldn't go, because it's a very far drive from California, so you'll have to run it for me. I have family roots in Massachusetts, but sadly couldn't explore them. Enjoy!
