The Biggest Upsets at the 2018 Boston Marathon

- The Boston Marathon is one of the most well-known races in distance running, but it also lives in infamy with its convoluted weather conditions ever year. 2018 brought the worst weather seen in years for the race, and with elite runner dropping out after another, this resulted in the biggest double upset in quite possibly all of marathon history.

Kawauchi looking like he just started the race 2 hours in, absolutely ridiculous
Africans: "we have the best, the fastest, the most endurance runners in the world"
Japan: "but have you ever ran in the cold?"
....
Japan: "Yeah but Im Asian"💀
I remember watching the broadcast and counting out Kawauchi when he was leading the pack early on. Such a crazy race that demonstrates how variables can dramatically affect outcomes.
"Maybe he's thinking of getting on camera..."
Me: You bastards.
Better comment than mine!! The announcers were so "smirky."
Those announcers who scoffed at Kawauchi were unprofessional and catty. Shame.
This YT'er and the Portuguese announcer knew how to pronounce his name unlike the American announcers who kept butchering it and not even trying.
I would have said the same things 💀 running that fast right out the gate is insane
@@neonbubble9132 But as commentators you have a responsibility to be respectful
They were extremely petty and down right unprofessional. They have no idea how he trained. Apparently he trained to have a faster pace. If I had to guess, his goal was much like Muhammad Ali’s. Tire the opponent early on and break their spirit. The commentators didn’t have a clue!
exactly.. yet prior to boston marathon..kawauchi won 7 out of 9 marathons
Everyone loves an underdog story
this race is so funny to watch again. crazy how kawauchi didnt even know he won lol
Of course he knew he won. What are you talking about?
Chuck Danger: Kawauchi is a much more accomplished amateur runner then any of the professional runners: he has zero sponsorship, he runs twice or three times more marathons then any professional runner and in tough conditions he is unbeatable and he has run 76 marathons under 2:20 , no one is even close.
@@robford3211 I believe hes around 113 sub 2:20 marathons now
I ran a PR at Boston ‘18. Almost went hypothermic and had a water table blow over in the wind onto me.
Watching the leaders it’s hilarious how the team Nike white windbreakers look like parachutes. Kirui was probably losing 15 seconds of pace just because of the bad gear selection. I guess that’s one of the disadvantages of being sponsored. All of the white poncho team had a bad day.
The Nike athletes probably weren't ready for the conditions. Yuki ran a Sub-Zero marathon a few weeks before this race.
@@sans3go342took me a while to realize sub zero wasn’t a time. I was thinking how can you claim to go negative time
"the team Nike white windbreakers look like parachutes. "
Yup. If you're wearing a jacket and care about time, it should be snug like Linden's.
I’ve watched dozens of videos about the 2018 Boston, but this is probably the best one I’ve ever seen.
Wow, you described the head games and strategy of elite race runners very well. Super enjoyable
The way he wave his arm while running is a normal thing. In most SE Asia, runners do the same. Its an effective thing to boost endurance. Try it. Because it pumps more oxygen into to the lungs when the chest is stretched wide open upon waving the arms. Very effective if you are feeling exhausted while running.
Also when I use to jog everyday, I learned swinging my arms too sharply wasn't a good technique. Its better to keep your arms relaxed so there's less tension on them. Your elbows shouldn't bend less than 80° for most of the race. I learned this from swinging my arms the wrong way. As a result my arms got stiff and tired before my legs got tired. And having to run with stiff arms is *not* fun.
I don’t see any point of upset.
Congrats tremendously Winning! Kawauchi Yuki
Some people are upset bc some see it as subtle racism.
upset because the defending champion was 2nd place
Really interesting how the race just *is* on a certain day and you have to deal with whatever the weather is
How is that interesting? Yeah they plan the day out ahead of time. No shit.
@@wesleytwiggs7687 It's interesting compared to indoors events where the conditions are basically going to be the same and you only have to prepare for those, I mean
@@Patashu I don’t think you know what interesting means. It’s just obvious. That’s like saying it’s interesting that most runners wear shoes. Like, duh.
@@wesleytwiggs7687 Agree to disagree.
@@wesleytwiggs7687 you don't often see such brutal conditions, and watching how the runners delt with the added challenge was interesting. It's like snow in a region where it's rare, you know that it's going to happen a few days in advance, but it's still interesting.
loved when you talked about the beautiful scenery you showed the downtown of my hometown! such a love rly area :)
Feels like a huge team working on these videos, yet it’s a 1k subbed YT channel. Keep up the great work!
Desi winning was a shock but she had been a quality runner for years. Described as a “Blue collar athlete” and the conditions were a blue collar like say. She can run 2:20 and that was proven when she ran the 50k in 2:59.
No upset yuki kawauchi deserve the win....no excuses!!!!
I love these kind of races, it makes it so much more exciting to watch.
5:50 training for 6 months with days to prepare and still have to take an emergency dump half way through.. the human body can suck sometimes lol.
She had to carb un-load.
Amazing documentary
I am the exact opposite of an elite athlete, but I've run in many Nor'easters (not a marathon, though), and I gotta say that running in one is its own thing. It's a special kind of storm. No shade on the athletes who struggled to handle the conditions. Kudos to everyone who completed the race, as well as the winners.
great vid, it's a cool dynamic that the weather can shift a race to favor different runners
Good/fast conditions favor fast people. Though conditions favor though people. Great video.
this is not upset, god bless every single human being who spending a whole a lot of time of hard work
Marathon runners looking at the weather, "oh hell nah"
Kawauchi: Hold my beer
Kawauchi was looking like: why did you stop me? it's only first lap
ur content is amazing... very underrated
Great vid!
The old gramps that makes this about him at the end is a jerk.
He’s a legend
Noticed that. Not cool
And then there are the 10k rich people with no shame
the host would apologized later after mocking and laughing at him at the start.. shame on them
Now that's the problem, he won. If he lose, they likely wont apologize.
Food for thought: why are most marathons held in conditions favouring Africans?
If more marathons were held during winter months, I bet not many Africans on the podium.
Hi
How is this an upsets? Ain't this amazing?
kawauchi's it is not his first international win.. omg.. this documentary is made up.. another documentary showed kawauchi won 7 out of 9 marathons before the boston marathon
Not to be that guy, but the "Portuguese stream" is actually Brazilian :D
What language do they speak in brazil?
how is there only 11 comments???
Fellow creo enjoyer
when an ASICS beats a group of NIKE lol.. ASICS was made for asian feet.. my favorite
No. Hypo is not a risk at 35 degrees. Silly
Foolish to run on strong concrete
It’s like a prehistoric man running on a flat stony surface for such a long distance
Never occurs in nature
Marathons should be on grassy land or on plain earth not concrete
Bro what lmao it’s just running
It's not concrete, it's asphalt which is partly made of rubber material. Also, shoes exist for a reason, to protect your bare feet from the ground.
I think the biggest upset was when it went boom, that was pretty upsetting
The big boom was in 2013
