Btw, those pages actually do have drawing in their backgrounds in the japanese version (at least for the HxH's one) but couldn't make it due to the translation (too difficult to redraw). I personnally enjoy this part of HxH but most of the reason i do is because of the track record of the author, knowing the pay off this density. So, I probably wouldn't think the same for a new artist. Also, lots of great points in your video 👍
thanks for the feed back man🤝 I ain't know about the images behind HxH's info dump in the Japanese version but I do agree that they can get away with this sort of stuff since they have our trust. That's why I said in the beginning that all this is for us indie mangakas, we don't have that trust yet🥲 I wanna find out how to get that trust. so readers can know we'll pay off on our future info dumps or even better... they can look forward to our info dumps...
Bleach is the anti HunterXHunter The world, power system and characters is filled with details, but they all kept hidden under the writing so much that even the most die-hard fans get confused sometimes. Whatever we know of a character, or a power system, is based on whether another character knows about it, to how much extent, and if they're willing to even tell us about it. Quite realistic though, but can be a hassle sometimes.
I'ma have to rewatch it and actually analyse it, I remember it being inspirational and but also on the nose like stuff you'd say to yourself while trying to improve but not stuff you'd say to someone else because it would sound cheesy🤔
one piece gets a pass because they first gained "investment" before they started with this type of expositional dialogue (I should have mentioned this in the video but the more investment you have, the more of a pass you get to be expositional)
If someone wrote a dictionary and the entire W section was all pictures, people would find it off-putting because it defies established expectations with no elegance. "Manga" as a word is rooted in the fact that it's a medium of pictures, not text alone. If the only thing separating a manga page and a textbook is the presence of panels and disembodied speech bubbles to separate sentences and paragraphs, at best it's an artistic take on the structure of writing. Most often it's stuffing exposition in with no other purpose than to explain things to the audience, maybe an ignorant character as well. Plus, as the internet has long since shown, communicating with text alone lacks so much nuance that could otherwise be gotten across with facial expressions or vocal tome. The best way is with formatting how the text appears to insinuate inflection or emphasis, such as the big "GRAVITY." or the bolded and italicized *_Ninth Prince Halkenburg_* in the opening examples. But the whole point is that manga isn't limited to text; by adding how the characters visually respond to the information you give the statements more depth and can even stretch your page count since less space is used by text. Conversely, by having a single panel of a guy's face and then the other 85% of the page being personal thoughts on the space he's in, there is objectively less manga in your manga when you could have just drawn the space he's in. As much crap as people give Araki for his confusing Stand powers, having a diagram accompanying the deduction/explanation puts a picture worth a thousand words in alongside the words, such as having a picture of an angry face next to the dictionary entry for "angry." TL;DR: wordiness in manga can work. This video is addressing ways to avoid making it poorly, or even avoiding the option entirely.
its a visual medium man having words cover half the page is not a good look you need to let some of the visuals tell the story too, not just the words and readers arent dumb, more often than not they WILL understand what you're trying to convey through visuals more than through words and theres nothing wrong with leaving certain things to interpretation there are times where a wall of text will do more good than the visuals but usually the inverse is true
And there is berserk with its legendary first page
anyone who's seen it knows why it's not in the video😂

What do you think of mha's dialogue?
I'ma have to rewatch it and actually analyse it,

Yooooo, new update, i gotta delay the oneshot a little because of exams in a few weeks, hope yall can wait for me to finish 50+ pages 😭🙏
good luck with your exams💪
we will still be here when you drop
Never understood people's aversion to words in the manga, you're literally "reading" the medium
It's a visual medium. It's primary focus should be on visual storytelling, not prose.
its the classic rule of filmaking that applies directly to any visual medium. If you have a story, show it, dont tell it.
