A very interesting walk, thanks!
This channel is unquestionably one of the best on You Tube. Highly polished and outstanding picture quality and superbly put together. There are many delights to be savored in the village. We owe great gratitude to this excellent film maker. Splendidly professional. This is top draw material. Thank you so kindly.
Thanks so much
Names can tell a lot. I lived near Northolt, so thanks for that snippet. Cheers from Tasmania.
Another great fantastic video of South Harting!.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Amazing video Richard, what a lovely village South Harting is, I'd love to visit here one day, absolutely stunning. Great church and great buildings, stunning views A lovely story to tell aswell about lady holt and the ghost story.
These are the Richard Vobes videos we all love. I first discovered you Richard on one of these videos.
Excellent, thank you.
Excellent instalment , thank you ! Quite how you dont have a series on tv doing this i dont know …..
Exactly this @Mr Mocki.. I can only begin to imagine the wonders he could bring us all if he had that kind of funding but free rein.
@@JuliaHartley I totally agree, Let's hope some producers will recognise him.
Thanks Richard for explaining the etymology behind the name Lady Holt. I wouldn't have known otherwise. You bring valuable depth & context to the places you visit.
Very nice village with lover church and lover old buildings date back enjoy was Sussex border walk
Lovely filming Richard thank 🙏
Another great & fantastic video of south Harting!.
Thanks for this Richard. First class filming.
Glorious morning. What a beautiful place. Loved the story. Ha ha. The shot of you walking out the cemetery with the graves and tree in background with the sunshine was spectacular. Thank you for fab vlog.
What a lovely walk!
Richard, that was an excellent video. One of your best if not the best. Great camera work, sound and back ground music , with a fascinating story and history of Hartung. Beautiful county. Well done and continue the great work.
Richard you have taken over from Sir John Betjeman, this could be why your vlogs are so enjoyable !
Beautiful Video Richard! What A Fantastic Presentation. Full Of Interesting Facts. Your Narration & Brilliant Photography Made This Such A Pleasure To Watch. Great Work & One Of Your Best!! 😊 😊 😊
I second that....
Worthy of a Documentary !
Excellent Richard. So much history, to discover.
Makes one want to do more and more research !
Shame about not being able to get to the Tor, but some research may be able to expand upon it.
As usual, well worth watching, and listening to the Ghost story, if only to make an ass of oneself !
Take care Richard, I await lots more to come !
Stu xx
Thank you Richard. I enjoyed that.
Great video, Richard. The variation of Pachelbel Canon in D at the start was beautiful as was the following one which you’ve used in previous videos. Agree with others who’ve said that those who committed “violence against themselves” refer to those who sadly committed suicide. I love & appreciate the variation in your work, the comedy elements which you insert in some of the videos & these more serious ones which also demonstrate your talents as a filmmaker & presenter. Thanks again x
Entertaining video, Richard
Another cracking video Vobesy ,,. we worked on Harting Church last year and was told that The Walled graveyard was the original Walled garden the the Manor House .. which either burned down or got pulled down,,,
Really interesting, thank you. Love the ghost story!
Oh wow Richard, that's the village my friend lives in, we go there quite often, we love it. Thanks for this vlog. 🤗👍😁
A fantastic video Richard South Harting is such a lovely village do many interesting facts love your videos as always Richard thank you 😃👍
2 years on, your video's are timeless Richard and I still marvel at your filming abilities, that this work is an entirely solo effort is praisworthy indeed......
Fantastic. South Harting really is a beautiful village, though shame about the road. Presumably those who had committed suicide were interred at that spot as they couldn't be buried in consecrated ground.
So much taboo on suicides
huh?
This is fantastic Richard, middle of January and 2 Border stages under your belt already, both beautifully produced and both excellently narrated. Thank you.....
A fantastic video - so much history, fabulous cinematography, gorgeous buildings - and a ghost story! Can’t ask for more!
You have mastered your trade. Thrilled
With this video.
Another really good video Richard. Keep safe.
That was very interesting. Also a lovely little village and a beautiful church. I always look forward to your walks whether they are out in the country or like this one - in a village or town.
Lovely vlog Richard, what a joy this series is, so thoughtfully put together
Brilliant video. Thank you!
Really nice video Richard, alot of very nice shots of old English buildings in the sunshine. I spent a number of my formative years living in an old village in Kent, mentioned in the domesday book, although I probably didn't appreciate it as much then as I would now!
really nice richard. you always make me feel a little closer to home all the way over here in USA. thank you :)
Really enjoyable watch. Very interesting, pretty village and area. Love a spooky tale as well.
Thank you Richard for another superb video! What a lovely village and beautiful church! I love that Victorian school house and water pump. The music and views were most enjoyable. Have a great week, all the best from Massachusetts!:)
Beautiful village, shame about the traffic lovely vid. The white building which was a pub was the Ship (thank street view). and the 1890 to 1914 OS map shows Torberry hill with "Fairy bed" marked at its peak.
The burials you refer to in the ghost story were clearly of suicides, who could not be buried in consecrated ground.
Yep, and crossroads were frequently where they were buried too.
Excellent 😄👍
A very enjoyable walk Richard, thank you 😊
Over 1k views too 👏
''They laid their hands on themselves,'' sounds like suicide and they would not be buried in consecrated ground as back then it was against the common law as religious law too. Spooky but excellent vid... Got to get myself a blue tweed jacket when I get back to England next week..
You’re such a brilliant presenter Richard, would not be surprised if you were snapped up by a tv company, love the mix of your domestic vlogs as well thank you x
What a nice area to walk in! It's so strange to see you walking about without any snow on the ground. We have over a foot (300mm) of snow from a storm Sunday night, which is no problem here, (we are used to it) but it makes walking about on the trails in the park difficult.
Mr BT.... GB weather in general has changed out of all recognition over the last 40 years (I've kept daily temp records over that period). I'm beginning to draw the conclusion that in the South of England at least, we are now almost at the point of living in a 3 season year -- extended Autumn leading straight to extended Spring with nothing in between...
@@johnbyrne2756 Yes, the weather is changing here as well. Our winters are much milder, which is not good for the apple crop and depletes the ground water supply.Once upon a time this part of New York saw 120-160 inches of snow a year. BTW_I haven't noticed any new poetry, I miss your posts!
@@bullettube9863 You'll find a couple of verses on the comments section of this very video Mr BT. Just spent an entire year writing 'BORDERLANDS -- Probing the Sussex Perimeter', amounting to over 10,000 words.
Thanks and keep reading!
@@johnbyrne2756 Read it! Well written as usual!
@@bullettube9863 That's very generous of you Mr BT & thanks... I'm just following the good Explorer round the Border. (The complete thing consists of almost 11, 000 words)
A wonderful example of a filmmakers art. Plus, right at the end, the synchronism of the music with the tapping on the road sign! 👍
Just subscribed😘Used to live in Shropshire, and I truly miss England. Now in Germany, its called Siegerland. Love ur vids, thank you🙏👋
Awesome! Thank you!
@@RichardVobes thank you too😘

Another fantastic video! Loved seeing the church and hillfort. All the historical information was so interesting and the story about the 'ghost' was really funny. I enjoy all your videos whether home based or out and about so thank you for all your hard work.
Great video. Thanks. I lived just outside Harting in my youth. A very busy community on special occasions with fetes. The old cottage you referred to on the corner used to be a pub called Ship Inn. A shame to see it closed.
Committing suicide was considered a sin, so would not be buried in sacred grounds (church grave yards) - perhaps that's what they are referring to(?)
Great bit of History on a really lovely village. As others have said That line of Cottages on the corner was The Ship pub. Spent many a Tuesday evening in there. Was built out of old ship timbers like a lot of "Ship" pubs were. There was also The Coach and Horses just South of the church now a private house and there was also The Greyhound on that first lane junction you came to after the long footpath up through the field. So many pubs lost!
Always was keen to get up Torberry Hill but all private. Boo! Makes total sense it was a hill fort. Aren't you meant to stay out of fairy rings!?
There are loads of little lovely hamlets around this area West Harting is to the North of Torberry Hill with Quebec and Goose Green nearby - lovely views North from the scarp here. East Harting is a bit further East next to Turkey Island!
You made the most of a Sunny Monday as I did. A nice lunchtime run to the West of Fittleworth and a view inside a delightful small modest
Saxon Church at Coates. The Vobes would be interested in this one methinks? You've already been and done a Vlog on it and I enjoyed that one as well. Many thanks.
Fantastic video as always Richard! The background music you used for outside the church gave me goosebumps. Pachelbels Canon in D Major. The music my wife walked down the aisle to on our wedding day.
Great Video,
Lovely video. We've driven past here so many times on our way to Wilts and I've never noticed the church spire before. Will have to look out for it next time. The telephone box you see there by the public toilets has books you can borrow. Keep up the excellent work Richard, your videos are all so enjoyable to watch, thank you
Yes and Rudgwick also, has a phone box with a new lease of life -- a little library full of kid's books....
Beautiful village but like you said, the traffic. Doesn't appear to have any village life.
Very interesting and informative video thank you Richard keep up the good work
Hi Richard I'm back I thought I had earlier read it so checked and yes Suicides were considered a crime against oneself and were often burried out of town at crossroads...their are some Thomas Hardy takes that refer to this also. ...warm regards Amac
An high quality excellent presentation. Time watching was time well spent. I wonder if they meant film who took their own life were burried. I am always interested to hear about the Fae, they Seem to cross cultures. They also feature heavily in Rupert Bear books and stories which I collect! Thank you for posting.
#folk who took their own life
The cottage you was talking about on the corner was a pub called the ship.
Yes. Shame it's gone. The George and Dragon up by the church went a long time ago too. So many old favourite pubs closing. One a week is closing so I'm told. I had a lovely walk around there several years ago. Glad I didn't know the ghost story then!
An excellent video. “lay violent hands upon themselves were buried” probably means that they committed suicide. “Suicide used to be regarded as shocking and blasphemous, and a coroner's verdict of 'felo de se' - literally crime against oneself - usually resulted in the body being buried at a crossroads, with a stake through the heart, and with no religious ceremony. The dead's property could also be confiscated.” So professional. Thanks Richard.

HI RICHARD!
Well well well! It is amazing that people had the ability to make such a deep well all those years ago. Maybe you could visit it on one of your filmings? Anyway, another brilliant episode, you do a great job with them, also considering it is all done by yourself.
May I ask a question, as I am quite naive about these things? My wife and I lately watch almost exclusively UA-cam. I imagine that most people watch The Bald Explorer on TV, not laptop. So that would not show up on the number of views, would it? So your views would be vastly higher than the figure shown? Or can UA-cam somehow count the TV views? 🤓
Hah! Of course you've been to my home village!
Torberry Corner would be the unsanctified ground where suicides were buried...they weren't allowed to be laid to rest in consecrated ground. Edit, sorry just spotted Linda's comment...somehow missed it first time!
People who took their own lives were buried at crossroads. They did violence opon themselves.
Violence to oneself could be suicide.
Might the "harms upon themselves"refer to suicides?
Wasn't it seen as an unholy act and not deserving of a Christian burial?
So these people might have been buried outside of the churchyard.
I may be wrong, but i seem to remember something along those lines.
Means what you do to others your doing to yourself
berry = bury = hillfort
You really are bad on east and west, Those houses were West Harting.
