St Mary and St Gabriel of Harting

In this video Cynthia and I went to South Harting to have look round the church there St Mary and St Gabriel.
Looking round the outside the first thing you notice is the Tower that is stone at the base but the spire is copper, on the South facing side it is Tile hung to protect the tower.
We found the graves of Cliff Michelmore and his wife, Cliff Michelmore was a TV personalty back in the 70/80s.
On the inside it was amazing where there is the incredible wooden spiral stair case built by a carpenter from near by Uppark in 1853, Also on the inside there is the very impressive Archangel Gabriel statue made by renowned local sculpture artist Philip Jackson.

That is a remarkable church. Given the size of it it must have served a large community. I love your ‘builder’s’ attention to detail especially in your description of the anomalies to the external walls. Thanks for this.

Thank you Andrew :-), I think you are right and the community way back in time would have been mainly of farmers that worked on huge estates for the landed gentry. Thanks for watching :-)

Thanks Kevin and Cynthia. I'd never seen the inside of this great old church, even though I walked past it just about every school day
for two years on the way to lunch at a hall in Church Lane in 1964 & 1965. It was always an imposing sight at the top of The Street.

The church is as you say quite imposing where it stands, but when you are there and you look back down the road at all the lovely buildings (not the cars they spoil the view) South Harting is lovely.
If you get chance go and visit the church it is well worth it.

Forty odd years ago My brothers and I were alter boys at this church. Shame about the extension.
