- There are more yellow jackets and European Hornets around this year than any year I can remember.
I have several trap types out and continue to remove them by the POUND! I'm not sure if this wasp "bloom" is prevalent throughout the region, but I've received calls almost daily about the "bees" in someone's yard... only to discover they are really wasps. Even the European Hornet (in the wasp family) is showing up on the side of homes and occupying trees in urban areas. Nothing like it before, at least I can't recall seeing so many here in the northeastern United States.

Apple Juice, sugar, a dab of grape jelly, vinegar and a couple of drops of dish soap will yield full containers in just a couple of days.
FORMULA USED HERE:
1 cup of apple juice
1 tablespoon of sugar
1 tablespoon of apple vinegar (repels honey bees)
1 teaspoon of grape jelly (concord grape jelly)
After all is placed in your feeding pan, drip 3 droplets of Dawn Dish Detergent to break the surface tension.
Done... empty often or they will just walk over the bodies and drink without sinking in.

It was fun in August, to test some traps and make my own box-traps, but the traps are overfilling in record time.
I'm wondering if this is the case in other parts of the country.
My honeybees are holding their own just fine in the apiary, even though wasps are on a constant patrol and attempt to exploit any hive opening.
I have all of my beehives closed down with entrance reducers to help the bees defend their resources. Now that the Autumn forage is greatly reduced, the pressure is on foragers to get those remaining resources.

How is that acceptable? They are still living things. They don’t bite you. They just try to escape your house and people think they are trying to murder you when in reality you kill it. Well then I can’t honk the same way, a person getting killed in the virus is also an acceptable loss.

I'm almost there with you, man. Just got through watching a thrilling Indy 500, then switched on UA-cam to watch hornets, wasps and yellowjackets get slaughtered. YESSSS!!!! Got a bunch of chores to do....well, maybe. This is better.
These are vicious little creatures.
I was pruning some dead flowers stems from several flower bushes I have on my yard.
I was unaware these little creatures would build their nest at ground level. I always thought if anything, their nests would be hanging from a branch on a tree nearby. My mistake.
I stepped on one nest. They are vicious. The attack was instantaneous. They followed me into my home as a run for my life... I had several attached to my shirt, shorts, and socks and they kept stinging me until I was able to remove my clothes. In less than 30 seconds, I was covered by them, and was stung over 50 times. Not a fun experience. If you don't know what you are doing on your yard, stay away. That is my advice.
And that Mario, is the classic yellow jacket wasp experience. The hidden in-ground nest that you discover by being stung.

Thanks, Fred...set up 2 of these bowl traps yesterday...a few seconds later they were swarming...I left them alone for a minute, came back, some dove in, left, came back a minute later, more dove in. Great recipe! It works!!

Using detergent to decrease surface tension is a beauty in simplicity case to me.
I developed a prejudice against yellowjackets in my youth in Pgh., Pa. From the age of about 9 I had to mow our large yard, which had about a dozen old apple trees and cherry trees, and four seckel pear trees. Fruit on the ground. Yellowjackets on the ground. A dicey place to be mowing a lawn using a walk-behind mower. I was so happy when my dad got a riding mower. I never got stung using it.
Perhaps more than any other insect, wasps are badly in need of a change in public opinion. As well as having fascinating lives, they are extremely important in the environment and face problems similar to those of their cherished, but often no less annoying, cousins the bees.
As the summer approaches its end, many will wish for it, but a world without wasps would most certainly not be a better place.
They may not make honey, but nonetheless wasps have just as fascinating social lives as the celebrated honeybee.

Wasps are also just important in the environment. Social wasps are predators and as such they play a vital ecological role, controlling the numbers of potential pests like greenfly and many caterpillars.
A world without wasps would be a world with a very much larger number of insect pests on our crops and gardens.
As well as being voracious and ecologically important predators, wasps are increasingly recognised as valuable pollinators, transferring pollen as they visit flowers to drink nectar. It is actually their thirst for sweet liquids that helps to explain why they become so bothersome at this time of year. It's time we stopped asking "what is the point of wasps" and start to appreciate them for the ecological marvels that they are.
Thank you very much for reminding us of wasps' crucial role in the environment. You are certainly right about the importance of educating public opinion, for example the people who, when they see a wasp nest, see only something to destroy as soon as possible.

great advice. with the loss of honey bees, and trying to stay away from insecticides, i added anise hysop to lure them back to our gardens but what was lured in are seriously aggressive yellow jackets. i got stung 4 times simultaneously (on my chest - with no shirt) last summer; walked up on a nest i didn’t know was there. (certain mumbled profanities are omitted from my post at this point...)

Hi, Frederick. Some improvements. 1. Use a wider rimmed bowl or a bowl with a thicker rim that won't allow the giants to hang on to the edge. 2. Coat the upper edge of the bowl with cooking oil. so that both yellow jackets and giants will more easily slip into the water. 3. Don't use water at all, just use cooking oil. Sprinkle a few ounces of ground chicken or other meat on top of the oil. 4. Using oil or soapy water, cover the bowl of liquid with a board with a meat style cat or dog food slathered on the side facing the liquid. Both yellow jackets and giants are carnivores. Leave enough space under the board for the giants to go under and bite the food. Both yellow jackets and giants will try to fly away. They will collide with the liquid. Thanks for sharing! Yes, I'm very familiar with the chicken/meat... even cat food methods. Since that meat spoils and draws lots of flies etc... I personally don't use it. All of the wasps/hornets are drawn to nectar/sugar syrups and this was just a convenient setup that happened to end up being used as a trap... the clear bowls came with the stand and are actually intended as bird drinkers/baths. Easy cleanup and the dish gets emptied several times a day to keep up. I leave the large traps to Shawn Woods and other master-trappers :)

if you cut a large hole in a lid it creates a lip ring around the edge and they have to fly in or walk in upside down to get at the feed increasing the chance they slip up.

Your method and other open-feeding methods like, with meat, are so much better that those plastic store-bought ones, and less expensive too. I regularly catch 200 or more per day using a chicken bone with a little meat on it.
The homemade traps certainly do work nice.
You'd think with all those bodies, just one would say, "Guys, something's not right here!"
Hi, I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. I find a more proactive approach in the spring helps a lot. In early spring, the only yellow jackets you'll see are queens that have newly emerged from their overwintering (at least that's the way it is here in the mountains; in much warmer areas, it's possible for a colony to overwinter). Their first priority is to feed and look for a nest location. Here, this happens in April and early May. By mid-June, they've established their nests and have produced and reared enough brood so that they can remain in the nest. So the time to act is before that happens.
I fill a spray bottle with isopropyl alcohol and a good shot of Dawn dish detergent. When I see the queens feeding (barberry blooms are one of their favorites) or hovering around my porch or eaves (looking for either a nest location or prey), I spray them with a stream of the alcohol solution, being sure to coat their body with it. I suspect this prevents air intake via their spiracles (air intake pores), and they fall to the ground and die. (You'll see them flexing their abdomen in order to respirate.) You just have to make sure you hit them 2 or 3 times in repetition to get a good coating. (Don't worry, I've never had a queen attack me doing this; their first reaction is to escape/vacate the area, in order to preserve the ability to produce a new colony.) I have killed up to 30 queens some springs. This helps to keep the yellow jacket population in the vicinity down to tolerable levels so that they are not so obnoxious. If you estimate each queen could result in a colony of 200-500 yellow jackets or more, killing 30 queens is eliminating 6,000 to 15,000 eventual yellow jackets.
Don't get me wrong, yellow jackets are beneficial in curbing the bug/pest population. But they tend to get out of control. So the above approach helps tamp down the population. But it's like digging a hole in the sand at the beach. It will fill back in without vigilance. I have done this for a number of years each spring and seen tangible good results, without the use of toxic pesticides. We have both Southern and German yellow jackets here.

I noticed the same kind of insects flying around in my yard, in France, and me not being particularly versed in beekeeping, this will help me a lot to "clean out" my garden because i've noticed that the bushes that both these yellow jackets and hornets visit are deserted by bees. Catching the queens in the spring has helped my yard tremendously! That is the key. I caught 3 this past may. I have only seen a few yellow jackets in my backyard this year. Good idea for a trap!

I had a wasps (England), yellow jackets (US) in my garden last year.
Honestly, they were no problem. They took out a lot of garden pests. But I understand the concerns from parents with kids.
The Asian hornet is still rare in England, which we need to control to keep our honey bees safe.

But they are a very rare species and not such cunts like yellow jackets. European Hornets are peaceful to humans unless you annoy them
That´s sad in their nativ enviroment they get extinct and in the U.S. they going nuts! But this is always the problem with invasive species! Btw. do you want some Racoons or Gray Squirrels in return?
smartacus88 You’re actually right. There are less and less European hornets here in Western Europe. But what we DO have more and more here are Asian hornets, which is much worse than the European ones. They attack and eat honeybees, and are very aggressive towards humans. But this summer, it was mainly the yellow wasps that were everywhere, millions of them. I wish they’d all go away, except the Honeybees.

Yes it is strange, In the UK the European hornet is particularly rare, and usually quite a sight as it's contrast in size to our native yellow jackets is somewhat significant. There is no shortage of those bast*#£'s however !

I used a method to get rid of some very nasty ants (a technique which I learned from a nearby monastery, since they used it but for wasps so that their bees could be safe), which is basically taking some boric acid, mixing it with sugar and water, and leaving it around their trails. It takes a while to kill workers, that way they can take the substance back to the nest, feed it to the queen, and bam! Dead colony! The monastery used a mixture of meat+boric acid, which has a similar effect as the mixture that I made.
Thank you for this interesting tip. I have used another formula this last Spring (Sardinia-Italy) to catch the queens at their first flight, so to avoid them building more colonies, but the formula attracted also the butterflies and his is no good. I certainly try this one and see if it works here. In fact, in my experience, I found out that insects, which are not at all stupid as someone can think, have indeed different tastes, probably depending on different food they find in different areas of the world. in the rest of Italy they are fond of beer and sugar and this formula attracts them perfectly. In Sardinia it simply does not work because they are fond of spiced red wine. Alas, butterflies seem to like it very much as well. Wretched wasps do love my grapes in the vineyard. I need getting rid of most of them, also because I am planning to start beekeeping and I don't want them around. I will try this formula immediately! Btw the trap I used is called TapTrap and is a very simple but effective one. I will try both traps with same formula to see which works better. Thank you!

The hornets there are no joke.
They are literally the size of a clipper lighter, sound like a helicopter and they have dirty yellow and black stripes the width of a finger.

Thanks man I have a pear tree wasps are attracted to this year, and I've tried using chicken, pineapple juice, haven't worked as well as the apple juice. Don't even need to set up a bottle trap and this is the most effective method.
Today I've noticed these giant european hornets with red heads, one got caught. It is much bigger than a black hornet.

This works to trap fruit flies in your house as well, though apple cider vinegar diluted in water with a drop or two of Dawn is all it takes.
Good one. You might like to try placing a board about 10cm wide across the top of the bowl, with fish or other yummy wasp bait on the underside. Wasps will land on top, walk under to eat their fill, then as they dip down to take off, they go for their last life's adventure.

@@mememaster9393 That's what I used to fight them back when i had to remove nests from around the restaurant I worked at. Just hit-em with WD-40 and they near instantly die. It blocks oxygen from getting into the bugs and because of their high usage they suffocate within seconds

Could’ve used this video last summer. Bees had an abandoned hideout abound my door, and would mobilize every time I took out my dogs. I used 2 soap bottles and some foam. The battle was legendary.
Right now I’m on a journey as we had European hornets move in 2 days ago in our oak tree. I certainly love your concept.. I have had wonderful results using boric acid for mice and rats. I’m pondering using it in the mix....I’m going to give it a try. Also getting a mix of canola oil and dawn/fabuloso to spray the outside bark. I had them in my BBQ shed and painted it with used motor oil in the Fall and they haven’t bothered it since nor been back but I’m not putting that on my live oak tree. Thanks for your video, I’m giving it a thumbs up....

I have become death, destroyer of wasps
I do the same thing for fruit flies, but with a bottle neck. I put Saran Wrap over the opening and poke a hole through the center. They climb in, but never out.

One year I bought yellow jacket traps and baited them with beef liver. I set out 10 traps. They were full every evening for 3 solid weeks. I was told that I possibly attracted all the yellow jackets within a 2 mile radius. I havent seen another yellow jacket at my house in the last 8 years.
Around here, the raccoons would have taken that trap out overnight :)

There seem to be a lot more grasshoppers than usual also but at least they don't Sting.
At least our chickens are nabbing the grasshoppers that are low enough for them to get.
