I certainly agree that Maurice is a far, far better movie than Brokeback Mountain. Of course, the source material, the novel, is a masterpiece and Merchant and Ivory were absolute experts at bringing literary masterpieces to the screen.
ascenbach1 I think they're quite different other than they're both homosexual themed and I think they both have their own qualities. Thus I don't think comparison is fair or quite possible. They're both lovely with amazing dialogue (I read Maurice the book and the writing was incredible. I was actually surprised that I enjoyed it because I usually despise old English literature because it's quite difficult to follow but this book was just amazing)
Okay, I obviously know who Hugh Grant is; I know who Rupert Graves is (he is Lestrade in the Sherlock reboot) but what the shit happened to the guy who played Maurice?!
This movie brought back memories of my first love, a boy named Rick. But like Clive, I was afraid of what society thought and so I tried to deny who I was. I lost track of what happened to him, but sometimes wistfully recall how we loved one another.
@solredoc Me too when I first watched it, even though I am a woman :). It is the best film about gays and homosexual love I've ever seen. Very touching, and it was lovely to see both the honest bittersweet quality of relationships as well as a happy ending.
And that was the difficulty Forster saw when he wrote the novel. Pretty much every homosexual love story up to that point was written with a tragic ending... someone was murdered, or committed suicide. This novel was literally found under Forster's bed after his passing, with a note saying, "Publishable, but is it worth it?"... He knew how difficult it would be to get a gay love story with a happy ending published at that time.
This is a beautiful film with excellent cinematography and an exquisite soundtrack. The story is compelling and as real as it gets.
It is an exquisite movie, perfect in so many ways. Cinema at one of its finest.

How beatifull! This film saved me from the depression, I think! :) ... Homosexuals can be happy, it was a revolution for me! :))
