    For all the dudes who measure their self worth by bragging about whatever super-machine they get paid chump change to run for some rich guy instead, here's why Haas is taking over the market: 6:00
    Watch what Mark does around 6:00. He pulls out a notepad, and writes down a customer's suggestion...
    I don't care what you say other machines can do if I don't need the capabilities, certainly not at their price point. What I do care is if a company is actually concerned for and is 'listening' to their customer. I care that a company will actually put a price tag on their machine instead of deciding if I'm 'worthy' enough to buy it.
    When my business grows to where I'm able to diversify into manufacturing, for what I have in mind in developing? I can tell you that it's going to start with a Haas. Not because it'll be the best machine in the world, but because they're a better company.

      Really?! First I have heard of this - and that is EXCELLENT. I don't know why more (all?) machine tool builders don't allow that. The machine could easily be "model aware" and thus avoid jogging into things - or at least slow down/warn...

      I work with both a Okuma Multus B-300W and a B-400W from 10 years ago, and both have this "CAS" system, you only crash the machine if you want to.
      They also have live tool monitoring and it warns you if a tool is no longer cuting correctly.

    This would be an amazing feature for machining classes. Especially at the high school level. Im in a senior machining 3 class in Montana and last week one of the other students in the class managed to ram the tool holder into his part because the tool was shorter than the depth of the hole he was pocketing. Luckily he was machining wood, but if it was steel or aluminum it could have been a disaster.

      Okumas CAS is software-driven, all virtual. It won't save you from setup errors like bad tool offsets or zeros, or bad info in the tool library. This is something different, its detecting the physical contact. It's a good idea, it will probably get better.

    The other day on one of our mazaks, i accidentally re started an EIA program from the wrong point, and it did not pick up a height offset, so as soon as I hit start, it did a rapid full speed Z move right into the vice. Smashed the tool, but the machine sensed the problem and errored out, and stoped just like this. I have never used any other machines but the mazaks, this video seems to suggest to me that most machines would just have kept pushing and broken themselves? This feature is being shown as a fairly new thing to haas?

    • @StefanoLinguanotto
      @StefanoLinguanotto 6 років тому +1

      It seems like in USA they only know the "40 taper". HSK (or Capto even better) are superior but probabily they cost a bit more because of the double contact wich requires very high precision

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 6 років тому +1

      @@StefanoLinguanotto Did you hear him say, "it's a $15k option."? That's like a 15% cost increase. That's why other machines are 2-3 as much... Because they have all those other options that really only make a difference in certain situations. 15%/$15k price increase is a lot of money. Is $15k for HSK worth it? That's a decision that is different for every person.

    • @thundercactus
      @thundercactus 6 років тому +3

      Honestly, if you need HSK or capto in a machine *for the extra rigidity*, you're looking at the wrong machine to begin with lol

    • @Suzaru87
      @Suzaru87 6 років тому +1

      I do not think so. Often the weakest point of the machine in terms of rigidity is the tool holder. HSK makes it possible to drive higher cutting values, which saves money. In addition, the cutters last longer because micro-vibrations are reduced and the surface finish increases.
      And even if you only mill aluminum in light cuts HSK is better, because the spindle expands at high speeds and an SK40 pulls into the spindle -> Z value of the tool changes indefinitely. This is why HSK tool holders are also used in micro-machining, where the overall rigidity of the machine is always given (for example HSK-E25)!

    The cost of going to a show like this is tremendous for a company like HAAS. Unless there is some special deal they get the floor space alone could be around or over a $100,000. The cost of moving, setting up, tearing down and transport back must be HUGE. The cost for the salesmen, technicians and the like is also big. Just mind boggling what it would be to go to a show like this. I used to go to a show for the company that I worked for and it was only a 10 X 20 booth and it cost $10,000 for the booth alone. For us though that was the biggest cost. But sell a dozen at the show and a few dozen from the exposure at the show and it all pays off really nicely. Cost of big business.

      Nope, if the machine "senses" the touch it is too late to stop, what you need to do is to calculate the turret momentum/inertia and the distance needed to stop, the safe mode makes the G0 slower, decreasing the momentum/inertia so the machine have power enough to react.

  • @WrexShepard

    This reminds me of the stall guard feature trinamic stepper drivers have for 3d printers and tiny CNC machines. Basically they don't need endstop switches since they can detect a stall/crash and auto-stop. I'm sure it's a lot easier to do it with something with so much less force behind it like a 3d printer though.

    HSK doesn't do much for protecting your spindle. I've had my operator put -10" offset on Z instead of -.10, stopped it, sent it home and the heat shrink mounted tool hit a cross member and completely tore the tool holder out of the spindle and ruined the hydro-chuck clamping system. Now, spindle speed, that's another situation, I can run the spindle at 24k and still have another 6k worth of overhead if I got the holders balanced for that RPM range.

    There are other (Japanese and Euro) machines that already have the load sensor on them for when you are Manually operating the axis and crash it to prevent damage to the machine. Its about time that Haas finally did this. Now the question is what does it do during actual operation. I don't think I have seen any that actually prevent some sort of damage to the machine 100% of the time. Still very cool and the more widespread it is implemented the better this technology will get across the board. Case in point I believe this is the first time I have seen a machine reverse. All the others I have seen that detect load just stop and shut down both the spindle and travel.
    I have to say had they of had this tech when I bought my Brother I would have given Haas a stronger consideration. Not enough for me to want to walk away from the Brother but if I was doing it all over again from scratch this would have made the cut list. To be honest the Haas machine was just too tall for the garage door frame (all brick frame) I had back when I got my machine but since that isn't an issue on my new house...

    Yet, the probes Z offset can be wiped by using the clear offset table mode, which is useless if you have the probe package. How ridiculous is that??...I shouldn't have to mention this, but you need a lock for the probe Z in the offset table.

  • @cncit

    I've found the new design 5 axis machines do better at evacuating chips as they have a deep trough under the trunnion table and also the slide ways are above the work area on the 5 axis gantry type machines so less chance of way covers and slides getting clogged with chips..HMC's are rigid but unless you get a 1 meter travel or above then chip evacuation is terrible. I like the new Bridgeport 5 axis..pretty sure it's made by Quasar in Taiwan and it has a Detron brand trunnion.

      HURCO SUCKS!! HAHA - Just Kidding. Only ran 2 different Hurco machines in my 30 years. They were nothing special, but they ran ok. I am not a fan of any conversational controllers that do not have the option of ISO/EIA programming. It ends up making your machinists dependent on one machine tool maker. There are different machine tool makers that do certain things better than others. A good shop will have different machine tools in their shop for different purposes. I am a huge fan of HAAS machines, but they are really slow in comparison to some of the German and Japanese machine tools. We have a Deckel Maho 5 axis that runs at 2000 IPM rapids standard and it is extremely rigid. Makes the HAAS look like a child's toy. However, for overall value (bang for your buck) nothing really beats a HAAS machine. Not to mention they have the best service in the business. Reasonable priced parts and labor rates. I have also ran quite a few Mori-Seiki machines which are the cadillac of the machine tool world in my opinion. Using Cam software to program and then just switching post processors for different machines is a real time saver.
