I think that the filter is for the crankcase ventilation (its supposed to be going back in to the enginge due emission laws) I might be wrong, but i've seen this several times.

Yeah, you can run the filter exit back into the inlet but I didn't want to do that just to remove any gas/oil contaminants from the intake
Since doing this setup, unsurprisingly the car no longer smells of oil all the time 😅
