IKEA EKET Modular Storage Cabinet Assembly Tips

  • This video is about IKEA EKET Modular Storage Cabinet Assembly. In this video, I demonstrate the process I used to assemble and arrange a couple different EKET cabinets together. I decided to just try and stack the cabinets the cabinets together rather than attach to the wall, as I didn't really want to drill excessive holes in the walls of my apartment. It's been working out well for the last few months as is, but it comes with some wall mount hardware, or suspension rails can be purchased for a cleaner look if you'd like the wall mount option.
    Different legs and bases can also be purchased, as well as connection hardware to secure the pieces together. Again, I just chose to stack them together.

    I made a media wall unit combination out of the eket units and I am completely happy. The Eket is a upgraded version of the Kallax series guys as it’s a bit more pricey due to it having heavier better materials and a better finish. There are more options than kallax has with push to open automatic drawers and doors etc. eket is more focused on storage and display purposes with completely closed backs so if u want to house any electronics you will have to cut out a space to run cords through. I highly recommend eket over kallax for quality and customization

    I found out the hard way that it's critical to start with the panel labelled with the "1" after wasting a lot of time, effort, and bad language with a 2x2 bookcase. The difference from the similar panel is the depth of the backpanel groove. The "1" panel has a much deeper groove than the other panel. When assembled incorrectly, it's impossible to attach the fourth panel. The deeper groove allows the backpanel to slide out of the way when the whole bookcase is inverted. Once I re-assembled the package in the correct order, the fourth panel attached relatively easily. I went from cursing the Ikea designers and engineers to admiring their ingenuity. (PS - I watched another UA-cam video where the guy actually trimmed the backpanel to fit. My guess is that he did not start with the "1" panel.)

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  5 років тому +2

      I'm pretty sure one of the boxes didn't have the "1" marked on the panel, but it worked out ok. Yeah, I agree, you have to look at the instruction pictures carefully because it's pretty easy to overlook a small detail that makes a big difference! IKEA does a really good job of engineering their furniture. Thanks for your feedback!

      Well Jack, The "1" Panel for me was not so identifiable, hence I walked into the same booby trap (& consequently found the backplate impossible to attach). I reversed the assembly sequence as you suggested....but can you guess my next banana skin I slipped up on???...after having re-assembled the sides with panel "1".... I forgot the "step" again to invert the entire carcass & have now screwed the freestanding legs to the top side ....hahahaha! :). The "Mr. Bean" textless instructions are still not idiot-proof enough yet.

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  5 років тому

      2 problems with that. 1 - With the stuff on kijiji or Craigslist or whatever, you're limited on what's available, not the items and/or colors you're looking for and, 2 - The stuff in the "as is" section is very limited in selection as well AND usually missing parts, damaged from incorrect assembly and difficult to load into a vehicle if it's a larger item.

    The 1-panel is at least different in the regard of the little cut-in for the backside wall you later insert. You need this little extra room the backside wall can temporarily occupy to put the fourth panel in.

    I've assembled a two-piece model (one on top of the other). I still can't believe that the two are connected through simple metal plaques only on the back. This means that if you lift the furniture from the top, you are breaking it apart. Did I miss any important step by any chance? I checked and double checked the manual and I'm pretty sure I did what I was supposed to. Thanks!

  • @roberteustis5241

    I found it’s much much easier to get the panels to lock together if you lift up on one while pushing down the other, instead of keeping it flat.
    I can’t get the dang doors in the 2x2 Cabinet to line up evenly though. The tabs, like goggles, do nothing!

    I was going to try one of these as it's the ideal size for my folded Brompton bicycle. I looked at the IKEA store online (UK) and thought I'd check out the reviews. Judging by the comments from people who are experienced in assembling IKEA furniture this design can be a real nightmare to assemble so I'll give it a miss for now. Perhaps they will modify the design.

    I got one cabinet with 1 door and one cabinet box on top, they gave me those metal things to stack but say if I tip it back a little it kinda comes up even though those screws in the back hold it, I wish it would not move unless I put 2 screws to hold the front part down together. I don’t wanna screw it to the wall either

    How sturdy and strong do they seem. Would it handle having books stored in it from bottom to top?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  5 років тому

      They seem pretty sturdy within reason. I've got 2 side by side on the floor with the double door cabinet on top filled with tools and bike parts, then two more of the cubes on top of that. I'd say there's easily 50lbs of weight on top of the two bottom cubes, and even with that, it feels sturdy and stable. Oh yeah, I've got books and camera equipment in the two bottom cubes as well.
      Thanks for your question!

    was there a piece/part that allows each unit to stack to one another?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, Ikea sells a little set of clips that clamp the units together. I just stacked them on top of each other, and that worked fine for me. If there are small children or pets that may try to climb on the boxes, I'd definitely recommend the clips and the fasteners to secure the units to the wall as well.

  • @donnapereira4926

    This is possibly the worst design I've ever seen. I have ruined two of the cubes trying to put them together and am going to return the ones I haven't ruined. You need some excessive strength to put the pieces together and nothing I tried could get the fourth side to seat correctly. I have a house full of Ikea pieces (that I assembled by myself) but this one is impossible.
