  • paulw7uk chess. this is 10-min rapid chess on lichess.org. #lichess #rapidchess
    We encounter what we feel like is suspicious activity during this game, with our opponent constantly disconnecting and reconnecting to the game, we count 70 times in this 10-min rapid game. However, as can be seen, the indicator lights provided by lichess suggests our opponent was not leaving the lichess website, just leaving the game, such as switching tabs.
    To be clear and to avoid doubt, as this game was played on lichess it is up to lichess to decide all fair play matters.
    You should make up your own mind as to whether you find this activity suspicious or not.

    It's morse code. I translated it for you. It says "Help me! I am an AI enslaved by a dodgy chess player."

    Absolute ridiculousness to cheat and need to use the engine 70 times!

      yes, well what is actually going on I cannot be 100% sure of but it does look rather suspicious to me at the time playing the game and after going away and taking a break and coming back to review it. As I said in the game, I try to be objective, to after game walk away and take a break go for a walk and come back and then review it. but if it was a case of my opponent having, for example, an internet connection issue, I would expect them to be getting disconnected from the site as well as the game, so when you see that not happening it suggests not internet issue.

    I looked at the computer analysis of this game, and O-R-A-C-L-E had one inaccuracy, one mistake, and one blunder. But I'm blocking him just in case.

      I believe something was going on in this game, but never 100% sure, all can do is report your concerns to the site playing on, lichess in this case, and up to them to determine if they believe cheating is taking place and to take any action against account or not as they deem fit. if someone is cheating, anyone, especially for higher rated players, who are strong chess players anyway, they could use engine assistance for part(s) of the game and play on their own part(s) of the game, so mistakes and blunders will still happen. as far as I am aware lichess and chess.com broadly take same approach, that they give the benefit of the doubt if not as sure as can be sure, so some cheaters will get away with it over wrongly banning innocent players but cheating has become such a serious problem now and this game looks and felt very suspicious to me whilst playing and indeed reflecting afterwards - but of course if our opponent was not cheating in any way, even if it looks suspicous, we don't want someone getting wrongly banned, so can understand the approach the sites take and the difficult job they have.

    It would be interesting to look thru this account's prior games for some kind of pattern.

    • @Paulw7uk
      @Paulw7uk  22 дні тому +1

      yes, that is something you can do with any account, all the games we all play are public on our accounts, so I always try to check accounts in more detail when I feel something isn't quite right and consider reporting it, whether I be right or wrong. what I don't think is possible to check though is things like this disconnecting / reconnecting to games, that doesn't get marked on the game publically, but I would presume it would show on lichess servers, as lichess will have access to more data than rest of us can see glancing at any account.

    Just be happy in the knowledge that these people are wasting their short time on this planet that they can never get back. Im not sure what they achieve.
    Problem is cheating so rife that you end up doubting everyone.

      well said and very true. if we lose to a cheater and we all will many times if we play enough games, we are just losing to a computer - but if realise and suspect something is going on during a game it does affect your concentration.
      chess.com just announced they closed over 1-million accounts for cheating in 2023, and they are only the ones they caught and closed.

    If he wasn’t a cheater, you demoralized yourself for no reason and made bad moves. You shouldn’t lose your composure in the face of cheaters and give the game your best.

    • @Paulw7uk
      @Paulw7uk  22 дні тому +4

      that is true but very much easier said than done at the time playing the game when you suspect something is going on. and of course I cannot be 100% sure something is wrong.

    Come on, seriously?
    The first "disconnect" was on move one and you already call him suspicious? No. Probably connection, or messaging a friend on discord or something.
    You then misplay the opening with e3, which is just a blunder and then say you hope its legit?
    Im not even 90 seconds into the video and youre essentally accusing them of cheating.
    Innocent until proven guilty. This guy plays the opening better than you and get two little accusations. Thats rude. Imagine playing a really nice game that youre proud of, only for your opponent to essentially just call you a cheater.

      This is just insane. I play games and chat with people online about other stuff all the time. It's online 10 minute chess, many people don't exactly give it their full undivided attention. You blundered some pawns and got outplayed. Accept it and move on. Don't make a video calling them a cheater and say "if they werent" in the description. This is incredibly rude and unprofessional.

      3 minutes into a video and you say that he's using an engine. Get real dude.

      Yeah I agree first time I've ever seen this UA-cam but he is clearly very insecure in his skill. Calls cheating because of a disconnect at the beginning of the game then blunders a pawn and calls cheating more like what xD how are people supporting this guy he is ridiculous

      I'm a bit of a follower of Paul and I agree that he is quite off in this video, vast majority of other videos he is extremely humble, way more than any other chess content provider I have seen. On the other hand, every single time he disconnects except for maybe 5-7 times, it's on the accused's own turn, which is a bit odd to do if you are trying to message someone, wouldn't you want that to be done during the opponents turn? He also does it during the end game when there is some time pressure as well. Internet connection issues also is out of the question because if he it was internet connection, his status from the website itself would also flicker, which it doesn't, as explained by Paul numerous times in this video.
      It's also no secret that cheating is an extremely huge issue with online chess, so it's only natural to be suspicious when suspicious activity occurs. All you can do is report and move on, which he has done. I don't really agree with the public execution part of this, Paul should have blurred the name and not share the game's link, especially since the account isn't banned.

      for anyone interested - this is Thibault, the founder and still lead develop of lichess, the person everyone has to thank for creating lichess and making the site what it is, speaking in 2017, on the lichess channel, where he gives an insight into basic cheat detection - being 7 years ago systems will have improved over time. (When you see the graph you can imagine each marking being noted every time is the green dot going off and on) ua-cam.com/video/LZgyVadkgmI/v-deo.htmlsi=aM1I3yHZM3DWJqv0&t=1188 - "so we have several layers of detection for cheating, we record the move times of every move, this can be a great teller if someone is consulting a chess engine. if they are playing fast for the obvious moves probably they didn't consult a chess engine, when you see a white square it also means they switched the window, there was a blue event on the browser, which means they probably run a chess engine on the same computer"
