The conversation held between Bill, Barney and Marshawn is indicative of what is going on in every poor/working class community in the country. The former politician is saying get your legislator involved. The pundit is saying how much better things are now. Meanwhile, the former Ghetto child-now a wealthy community activist is asking 'how is it better, when people still can't afford to feed their families and we still can't get jobs and crime is still high' and if I don't grease palms, elected officials don't show up'.

Agreed 100% except that Marshawn may have grown up in the hood, but West Oakland isn't a ghetto. I say that as a man who was born in Oakland. But otherwise, spot on. And which makes it even more obvious as to how/why blacks don't consider conservative politicians. They do even LESS while demonizing the circumstances even MORE.

Marshawn Lynch should vote, but he really schooled the panel in the realities of urban areas. A lot of politicians only see the people the come to their rallies and don't do enough for people who are really struggling. Hence, why the uninformed voter still voted for Trump. Marshawn made a really good point. And Barney Frank kind of dodged the notion that politicians won't do anything for Marshawn unless they get a donation themselves. That shit needs to stop. I respect Marshawn for helping people directly, but Bill is right that it is not sustainable and barely a drop in the bucket too. What Marshawn needs to understand, as well as many people who don't vote because "politics sucks", is the concept of false equivalence.
That both parties have problems and don't fix everything does not mean they are the same. If one party is weak, but the other is malicious, it's not the same thing.
When people don't vote, they pretty much guarantee Republicans will win. And when they take power, they reward rich people, they stack conservative justices in courts, and they gerrymander and rewrite laws to guarantee their wins in future elections even when Dems win the popular vote. Dems fight for civil rights, they fight for voter rights, they fight for healthcare, and they fight for all kinds of issues that affect middle and lower income Americans.
If you think they're both bad to some degree, it's like Dems poison the well by the teaspoon and Republicans poison it by the gallon. One will kill you faster for sure, and when you don't vote, you guarantee that the worse one will win.

He wasn't saying politics sucks, he was saying people don't feel like they are a part of the political process. The had voted in the past for people who either did not bring any change to their everyday lives or that after the election ended the politician disconnected from them, the constituents. I can understand how that can happen from time to time with federal politics, but it happens in state county and city politics and the more local the politics the less that should be happening. It's a systematic brainwashing of power surrendering.

Apathy towards politics and politicians isn't good, because at the end of the day the policies they make effects your life in the long-term. Where will USA be if a politician like Lincoln wouldn't have help abolish slavery, where will it be when politicians saw the rising tide of the Civil rights movement and changed the law, people with pre-existing conditions could start going to a doctor because Obamacare was implemented, etc .....
And only if more common people get mobilized and get involved with politics, will the power of big money in politics reduce.

@tinwoods Marshawn Lynch not voting does not make what he is saying "colossally stupid", he's just pointing historic facts. Many black folks don't vote because they think it's all been a hoax; America's historic past seems have been proving them right ever since the so called Emancipation Proclamation and before. The (black) comedian and 5150 radio host, Corey Holcomb, has also stated that he does not vote for the exact same reason I just pointed out, and he's a very bright dude. By the way, what Marshawn Lynch said was not "colossally stupid", you're just may be too stupid to understand what was saying and were too caught up in the vernacular in which he used and that just did not appeal to your ears. They in favor of banning speech they don’t like, they will call everyone they disagree with a Nazi or racist so they can justify violence toward them. Banning speech/ ideas you don’t like is modern day book burning. All of these things are fascist tactics, but they will label themselves “anti fascist “ or “anti racist “ . Voting is a way to influence the changes you would like to see in your community. It is making your voice heard and not leaving the decision making to the other people who are voting. On the other hand, how do we create meaningful change that is observable by the people in the communities that need it most? If people cannot see it, feel it, touch it, has the change and progress really happened? We really need leaders that bring communities together, so they can organize group discussions where everyone can agree on the "observable" benchmarks of the progress and change they are voting for.

Marshawn is right. This is what most college educated African American people encounter in California. We go to school, get the degrees, get the connections and ask for help from the politicians. but it always comes with some PR campaign, donation to their campaign or some sort of indentured service going forward. By the time we spend all that time getting nowhere, we stop and just go do the work ourselves.
People in need, they have to be met where they are at. Then they can push forward to upper levels. Time and time again in my 20s I tried to help communities and kids, but Politicians, church politics etc got in the way. Eventually me and my friends started directly helping families as long as we could.

Imagine if I told an LGBT friend that only a Kyrsten Sinema or Tammy Baldwin or Chris Pappas was an example of someone who could help your problems...that's not a good look. And precisely why while I lean left, I can't be a Democrat. Barney Frank hasn't ever been to East Oakland, but throwing out black names. The mayor is Libby Schaaf, a lily white woman. Why isn't he mentioning HER about improving the lives of black residents in Oakland? The notion that blacks can only depend on blacks for representation is a shitty narrative and maybe then Obama DOES deserve criticism for not 'doing more' for the black community, since evidently it's kinda inferred that when seeking improvements, we should only look to black examples.

You know, there is this old adage that begins with "Give a man a fish"... I think you can figure out the rest, probably because people here learned to fish in life. While Marshawn's work is obviously notable, the issue is simply that it treats the effects of the problem - but not the actual cause of the problem. You would make a WHOLE lot more progress in life if you:
    1) Teach people simple financial budgeting - including the basics of what interest is, what a mortgage is - these are all simple contracts / agreements that people blindingly sign because they were told to.
    2) Work with the politicians to create a feasible system to lift them out of poverty - be it creating jobs, cleaning up neighborhoods, cleaning up crime, etc..
    3) Work with others to reduce burdens - be it bill payments, housing costs, utilities, debt, etc... (e.g. legally helping them declare bankruptcy, etc.)
Or you can just hand out some turkeys and call it progress. The reality is obviously different.

    • @FreakinFred08

I concur. I think one of the best things you can do to help people who are in unfortunate situations is to EDUCATE them on how life works. Imagine if we learned how to manage money and stuff like that in high school or even earlier. It would have a monumental impact on our society, I'm sure of it. I have relatives that, for whatever reason, can't grasp 'budgeting' or 'saving'. They waste money on things that they don't need and sometimes find themselves in financial trouble. And guess who they turn to when they need $200+? And I'm left wondering, "So you need xxxx dollars to fix up your car? But didn't you just buy a 60" flatscreen TV two months ago?!" Like...why the HELL do people not have a financial safety net?!!!

He never said he doesn't like to be touched. He doesn't want to be touched by STRANGERS. Maher did touch him on shoulder a lot, but I watched Lynch's body language and didn't see that he had any problem with Maher doing that.
Lynch seems like a shy guy and was a bit nervous, so I'd say he APPRECIATED Maher's attempts to make him more comfortable by the reassuring touches he gave Lynch. It was like Maher saying to him, "Relax. You belong here and I'm happy you came".
And, btw, don't know if you're a man or a woman. I'm a woman, and it's a fact that women are MUCH better at reading body language and facial expressions than men are. I think it's because we're raised "to please", so out of habit, we look for clues on how to do that. (Not a particularly good thing, but it's reality).

Anyone complaining about Marshawn probably should know two things:
    1) all of his representation is basically democratic, so not voting doesn’t really change the outcome, unless he tried to vote for a different party.
    2) he still does what he can for others. That’s called being a super hero in today’s society. And those long term solutions the politicians talk about are exactly long term. The poverty rate is the same today as it was in the 60s when the great society started. Government creates long term programs for things that they were supposed to fix.

Exactly. The American media hardly ever reports on US foreign policy. Both parties are complicit in the military-industrial complex and no one calls them out anymore.

Austin why, no. No. I don’t. I cannot conceive of the democratic candidate who would come close to being as malicious as Trump is. I am also not so foolish as to be bound by my own rhetoric if a bad candidate got the Dem nomination.

Marshawn drives me crazy. He's doing such great work, but he's not recognizing the importance of keeping an eye on the long-term ball (I guess as could be expected since that's a baseball metaphor) that, like they are trying to tell him, the work he's doing will be so much more effective with policy-maker allies. It takes both, and having this disgust with politicians has a serious downside. I feel it too, I like Bernie Sanders, AOC, and that's about it, but I know it does matter and there are real improvements that a John Kasich can make that a Mike Pence never would. Call it lesser of two evils, but ONE IS BETTER

Sorry Barney...corporate Dems are also the enemy of working people. We have no voice except the AOCs of the world. I love when millionaires preach to us 😂😂👍

Oh, yeah, Barney Frank, the corporate dem who wrote the legislation to create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which has gone after banks on customers behalf, returning billions of dollars to the American consumer. what a horrible person. how dare he create an agency that has the authority to make big banks pay for committing fraud. that is the epitome of being the enemy of the working people. this post is sarcastic btw.

I know he had to end it there, but that was such a glib thing to say...the guy who doesn't vote had a point. Speaking of CA, in the Bay area, cost of living has far outpaced wages to the point where more and more families are becoming homeless and a six-figure salary is now considered barely middle-class...come on, now!
