We are now digital, 100%. The dentist can 3D scan the patient and the part is designed on a computer, then sent to a milling center where it is milled from gold pucks. It is pretty awesome. This video is excellent to show how many different steps there are in this old way. The author has done an excellent job throughout and made a nice looking crown. That is not easy to do, consistently with all of those steps, and materials involved. Digital workflows eliminate almost every one of the variables in the process he shows where human error could negatively affect the outcome. Milled gold crowns are 99.6% of the time successfully delivered to the patient.
This seems like a very laborious antiquated system. There are computer programs that do a lot of the work..
so how do you get the wax crown off the plaster tooth?
The wax is removed around the preparation (the red line) allowing the wax crown to be removed.
