watching people make clasps is absolutely fascinating - i've only seen it done in person with a box clasp. it always looks so intimidating, because of the precision required, but the mechanism here isn't as complicated as i thought. super cool :D imo, a handmade clasp really takes your piece to another level.
@@hectorgarcia8691 I hear you and except your 9.5 🙏🏻 and usually did this, but the uk 🇬🇧 doesn’t allow this. We have our work marked by the assay office where it is tested before they mark it themselves. Bummer because I take great pride in stamping it myself.

What's cool about this is that I might not necessarily ever make it out of metal, but I want to try and make one out of wood. Been getting into my carpentry a lot more recently and that would be an awesome challenge. Awesome video thanks
@@jacothejeweller i've been studying Japanese and English and Italian joinery techniques and it's amazing but I need to get my chisels sharpened up again, you need to be so precise. Everything is always possible - but I would change the design to help the softer gold to keep its form. The spring will eat into the metal so that’ll have to be flat. Good question, but this design would need to be adapted.
*always always make the trigger as long as it can be comfortably. too many times i get jobs where customers want them replaced since theyre too hard for them to open, you can always file it down but cant add any more length without taking it apart/replacing. either make it much longer or bend it out more perpendicular so either way they have enough leverage to open it easily.
Sir, are there still many manual gold craftsmen like you? I am also a gold craftsman, but the competition with factory products is very tight, many people around my village have left their jobs making gold jewelry because of the competition, I want to enter the jewelry manufacturing factory. Even if I can't, I hope there will be lots of orders to make gold and silver jewelry for me.

@@jacothejeweller great!! Looking forward to it, by looking at the quality and attention to details on this lobster clasp, we can already see a box clasp MASTERPIECE coming up from you guys!
Todd, thank you for your comment, the liquid I am using is methylated spirits - I use it to quench the metal because it cools the metal slower and cleans it at the same time.
Honestly, this was an interesting watch, bit I have enough to be doing lol. I'd rather just order in a premade stamped lobster catch. There's some nice quality italian made ones available to me.

What gauge /mm is the G-string spring wire? Is it stainless steel? There are so many!
@@NLandra33 it depends on the size of the clasp but around 0.3mm from memory

Is the spring not going to weaken by heating it during soldering?
@@birgitLeleu no soldering after the spring is in. I burnish the pin that holds it together.

some strings got rust through overtime used. its better to use ASERO strings then put a liitle oil for lubrication
