Thickness of wood and coating are not added but are cubed in the math that determines the dampening of sound for acoustic instruments. Do this on an electric.

This is 100% true. I wouldn’t recommend this on any acoustic. Electric will make no difference thanks to pickups.

Question: if you wanted to do something like that permanently, would you use a clear coat after applying the vinyl?

You could, I suppose. I've never tried it. I would think the sealant would need to go over the edges of the vinyl to make it permanent though.

Yes! I used automotive vinyl wrap, which is designed to be removable.
