For the few that don't know... Jim wrote this song sitting at the kitchen table in the old farmhouse he and his wife were renting in... upstate new york...I think... when the times were hard and the money was lean. His wife had just told him that she was pregnant and...being classic Jim...he immediately panicked because they couldn't afford a child. He and his wife got into somewhat of a small argument because of his worry and his inability to be overjoyed by the news. She went upstairs, he sat down at the kitchen table with his Martin guitar and wrote a song to tell his wife what he really wanted to say to her... instead of what he'd actually said. He also realized that if they were going to bring a child into this world then he would have to earn more money to be able to provide for his family. What we now have left of Jim...those beautiful songs that we all sing the lyrics to everytime they come on the radio...all those songs that touch our hearts and paint vivid scenes in our minds as we listen.. those songs... Jim wrote over the period of that following week...sitting at that kitchen table... in that little rented farmhouse they could barely afford. That week of effort, love, and worry on Jim's part... provided songs that generations of people would live, laugh, cry, mourn, and fall in love to for decades to come. That week's worth of writing genius made an indelible and lasting mark on the hearts of millions and on this planet forever. Jim, thank you for the soundtrack to my lifetime on this planet. I never knew you...I was only a child myself when you were taken, but somehow I feel I knew you as a brother. Rest peacefully dear soul. You earned the rest. (Denny Lee 1/20) Remember...at that moment you think you can't...that you don't have the ability...that you're not important enough...that's the moment you define who you are. You should...you can...now will you?
The story that I heard was that Jim had gone out with some friends promising Ingrid, his wife, that he would be home early. Ingrid was not very happy when he came home late and locked the bedroom door. He went to the kitchen and wrote the song and then proceeded to sing it to her outside the bedroom. The story didn't give any details about what happened next.
Denny what beautiful soothing words,no words can match what you wrote hear l can't write better than this than copy and paste what you wrote.l never knew Jim Crose other than the songs on radio until a few days ago!.His voice sounds like another artist that l'm familiar with singing at the same erasure (The guy who wrote "you have a friend in me" the voice arrangement and picking style is incredible the same!!.you are awesome!!
My Dad and I danced to this at my 2012 wedding. What I wouldn't give to relive that moment one more time. Missing you since 2015. I love you always Daddy
I'll never forget the day my Dad was driving me to high school and they announced on the radio that Jim Croce's plane had crashed. I was devastated. What a beautiful person, Rest In Peace Jim!
I will always treasure the memory of seeing Jim Croce live at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, California in 1973. He was the opening act for of all people Woody Allen. Woody Allen was doing stand up as well as his writing at this time. But Jim and his accompanying guitar player were the stars of the whole show. His12 string guitar playing was just captivating. As a teenager I had never heard anything so beautiful. Thanks for the memories Jim...

I can not disagree, although there are so many I hold that are so exquisitely written and sung, the list I have in that top category are heart-wrenching because they are so touching. More so when the songwriter-performer has passed to that songwriting-singing place up above. Jim, John Lennon, and Karen Carpenter, are among the very best and deeply loved singers that almost everyone can agree can not be topped when at their peak. "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" is Jim's peak for that special emotional touch that few others have been able to touch the heart so deeply. The fact that all 3 died so unexpectedly and so young probably has something to do with it: Jim 30, Karen 32, John 40. They should have had decades more to write or perform and spread that special happiness and good feelings that they did for the few short years they were allowed to have. Miss those three and many others who can no longer add to their repertoire of singing and/or writing. Jim was going to give up traveling and performing, and told his wife Ingrid he was going to quit music and stick to writing short stories and movie scripts as a career and withdraw from public life. He was shockingly killed in a freak airplane crash because the pilot did not see the tree because of severe darkness, when taking-off on the night of Sep. 20, 1973, after Jim's performance in Natchitoches, LA. Croce's bandmate bandmate Maury Muehleisen also died, along with the pilot and two others. I found out years later, Jim was going to perform at my university two weeks after his plane crashed. My copy of his album, "Photographs and Memories" (1974) is a cherished possession. Jim Croce, 30 Jan. 10, 1943 Philadelphia, PA - Sep. 20, 1973 Natchitoches, LA.
From someobe who was a HUGE fan of Jim Croce in his (my) youth, thank you so much for posting what may just be at once the most simple & profound love song of our time.
The most sensitive song ever written and sung ...Jim Croce had a silky soft voice that came into its own in this song. It is terrible that he died way too young in sept. 1973 at the age of 28 in a plane crash....R.I.P.
My most favorite 🎵song he wrote.❤️All of us romantics appreciate these lyrics. We need to send this song straight to our 💕 love.Keeping this beautiful song alive. Thanks for sharing.😇
This masterpiece from Jim has a flow unlike almost any I have heard from a ballad! Has always been my favorite Jim Croce song! Should have been a #1 top pop hit, but it did get to #9 in Apr. 1974 on the Billboard Hot 100, over 6 months after his death. It did reach the top (#1) spot on the Adult Contemporary chart, and #68 on the Country chart, his only appearance on it. He should have had many more years of terrific songwriting his soft rock and story-telling ballads, but he only had 30 years. We were robbed of great music, and his loss still resonates and wondering "what if he lived to 77", after the 47 years lost from Sep. 20, 1973.
Listened to Jim when I was a kid, always want to see him in concert, then the terrible thing happened. His music and poety always brought peace and a sense of spirituality in a troubled world. Always wanted to go to Croce's in Diego, but keeping a family together, work and staying afloat in a turbulent economy made me miss that too (thank you Ingrid for keeping it going as long as you did, I missed it by two weeks, was driving to Croce's West from Ariziona to finally fulfill a dream and checked the website one last time before departure). Still listening to his music and appreciating him and glad other people are helping keep this alive. Time waits for no one: he understood better than anyone. His song "Time In a Bottle" was our wedding song.
So sad how he left this earth and far too soon. What a great talent and seemingly good man. My dad loved Jim Croce, I remember him always going around singing his songs and saying "Sing it Jim!" Now my dad's gone too.😞 So as much as I love Jim's songs, kinda makes me sad. Bittersweet.
Mr Croce, there has been no one close who has wrote, sings so beautiful. The twang in the guitar brought on by a labor accident - the man was down to earth folk singer; been gone since 1973 , been learning more about him all my life.
I still remember the memorial they had on tv after Jim passed away. There were comments from his fellow musicians and friends. He was a good man. We used this song at our wedding and so happy that we did. It’s timeless. Thank you Jim
All Jim Croce did was brilliant! I’m as sad today as I was when we lost him so many years ago! Time.... it was very short, but what he gave us? It all lives on and within us
Ironically ,I was born the same day he passed away . Always felt a strong connection to him in spirit.I wish Jim didn't die so young and had more time to make more beautiful music.
A truly beautiful song! He had such a way with words and music writing in general! Sure do miss him, but what a legacy of wonderful music he left! If I can leave a fraction of what he left, I'll be doing good!
Used to sing this along with Jim to my future wife back about 1974. The marriage didn't make it but thank goodness this song lives on! Still think about her when I hear it...

Jim Croce died 11 years, to the day, after I was born...who could have known that, after so many years, I'd be falling in love with my own husband, on a regular basis, to these lyrics...
We all had our dads sing this song or play it or do both. My dad too sang this song before he had died on June 18th 2020. I still have the Video where he sang this song and played it on the guitar I am holding right now. Sill amazed that you sang this song to Mom confessing your love to her. Please watch over us and protect us... Love -Your Son June 30th 2021
A haunting, magnificent, exquisite, incredible song from one of the very best singer-songwriters. How it only peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early-Apr. 1974, is unknown. What were people thinking, after his sudden passing at only 30 the prior Sep. 20 (1973), to give this finest example of a ballad only to #9? It should have been an easy #2 at the least. Nevertheless, it will be remembered far longer than many of the songs that hit higher, and Jim Croce will never be forgotten in music history from the early-1970s. Same for his greatest hits album "Photographs & Memories," (1974) which is a cherished possession, every song on it tells a story. We should have enjoyed many more years of his passionate story-telling in song, than having it stop so soon after he finally made it big with his #1 (July 1973) with "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown."
@ Sorry you have not resolved any of the issues. It takes the both to redo and make it work.God BLESS you never know. I am here because I heard this song , in fact the last line of this song on my car radio just as i was about to drive on. Switched on the radio and this song ended with that line. It touched a cord within me and i told myself,, i had to find out who wrote those beautiful last line. It was Jim Croce. It has been over 40 years since i listened to his songs that i forgot his name. RIP Jim . YOU were gone too soon that your amazing talent went unrecognized.
i just simply fall in love hearing this song.. for no reason.. :) brings me happy -in-love-sensation.. feels like if im in the serene campfire, sitting by the fire with some guitar man singing this song..
Once, I wrote a poem inspired by this song. That poem was about how the power of love for a woman often put me at a loss for words. The poem's title "I can only say I love you in a poem."
Jim Croce wrote the song for his wife and son....A shame Croce life was cut short...Beautiful song written with deep loving emotions from the heart...Jim, had a master in philosophy found it easier to express himself with songs...I have all of his albums...Truly a great artist....

Unfortunately he died in a plane crash in 1973. 💔💔💔💔

Linda canção! No Brasil ouvíamos em português. Não mudou quase nada a letra. "Eu queria dizer que te amo, numa canção". Título e refrão em português. ♥️♥️🎶🇧🇷

I never forget this song,
I suddenly remember this song I listened to many years ago . So beautiful !!!
Jim Croce was awesome. I miss him so much.
RIP Jim . YOU were gone too soon that your amazing talent went unrecognized.
this song went to #9 on the pop charts in 1974!!!
Love love Jim Croce and his loving balladry type songs! So sweet!😘

RIP Jim... But there's something that I just gotta say.... You're amazing man..
I'm a poet and I find that I'm more able to express or say "I love you" much better in writing.
It’s our curse, and blessing.

Very beautiful song!!!
loved this song and their guitars. wish I could have seen Jim in person
Once, I wrote a poem inspired by this song. That poem was about how the power of love for a woman often put me at a loss for words. The poem's title "I can only say I love you in a poem."
Love it
Share it to the world!!!😂👊
Jim Croce wrote the song for his wife and son....A shame Croce life was cut short...Beautiful song written with deep loving emotions from the heart...Jim, had a master in philosophy found it easier to express himself with songs...I have all of his albums...Truly a great artist....
sounds so familiar , know the feeling . great song
