Both ladies are classy, lovely, beautiful women from my grandmother's, "Greatest or GI Generation" time!!!! Ms. Waters was a seemingly jovial, sweet spirited, talented pretty actress. Ms. Bailey was a foxy, sassy entertainer, who always loved to dress, wearing a stunning cut!!!! My brother and I were always curious Boomers, asking my grandmother a multitude of questions about her era!! My grandmother, expressed that they worked very hard, they enjoyed a simple life, where family/friends were close knit, they loved the LORD/the church!!!!!!!
That was really wonderful. Maybe it was my imagination but it seemed like Pearl looked at Ethel with such reverence. Both of them looked so beautiful like the beauty came from deep within and burst out all around.
Pearl Bailey was one of the smartest performers of her time. like most comic performers, she's not comfortable to be genuine in public. Leave it to the legendary Ethel Waters to bring out the peaceful beauty in Bailey.
Ethel Waters (1896-1977), was my maternal Great-Grandmother's cousin. She could be a difficult person but by all accounts was a revered, professional, exacting, dedicated, and a fine actress; receiving an Academy Award nomination for her role of Aunt Dicey in Pinky. She was the second Black actress ever to be nominated for the Academy Award (Pinky), and the first Black actress to be nominated for the Emmy Award (Route 66). Incidentally, Gail Fisher of Mannix fame, was the first Black actress to win the Emmy Award. A renowned blues singer, dancer, and actress, she was known as "Sweet Mama Stringbean" during her heyday of the 1920's & 30's. Notable songs include: Am I Blue?, Happiness Is Just A Thing Called Joe, Taking A Chance On Love, His Eye Is On The Sparrow. Waters was also the first Black to host and star in her own television special. Having long since lost her svelte figure, by the late 40's she was relegated to and made the best of matronly supporting roles-usually as domestics- in Pinky, and The Member Of The Wedding. Occasionally, she turned a starring role such as in Cabin In The Sky. Although lifelong friends, Waters gave director Vincente Minnelli fits during the filming of Cabin In The Sky due to her demanding nature and her cruelty towards then ingenue singer and co-star Lena Horne. Horne in turn took out her frustrations on co-star Butterfly McQueen. Because of racism and her difficult reputation, she was blackballed by Hollywood studio execs for years until Pinky. Later film roles include: Carib Gold, The Heart Is a Rebel, The Sound and The Fury. She continued to work in television during its Golden Age : The Ethel Waters Show (1939), Beulah (1951-52), Daniel Boone, Owen Marshall, Route 66, Encounter, The Hollywood Palace, The Barbara McNair Show, Texaco Star Theater, General Electric Theater, Climax!. In middle-age, she became a born again Christian and worked/sang fervently for the Billy Graham Crusade until her death in 1977 aged 80 (Cancer). She was married and divorced three times without issue (children). In her own words, Waters was openly and unapologetically bisexual, "The BEST that ever did it!" during her early career heydey. Her Grand-Niece is 90's R&B/House singer-songwriter Crystal Waters (Gypsy Woman-She's Homeless, Relax, Regardless, What I Need, Say, If You Feel Alright!). 👍🏽💯⭐🤗🕊️
This duet is as glorious as it gets. What great team work. The ladies are so different - yet so with each other in this song.I love how Pearl gently supports Ethel - and what a dynamo is Ethel.
This is great! I love Pearl....such a great personality and voice to match. Always made me happy to see her, and Della Reese another great beauty and singer!!
Two rays of sunshine. Did not appreciate Ethel Waters when I was a kid. I had to grow up to get her. And Pearl Bailey had her own unique style, voice and sense of humor. I miss them.
This is great. I was looking for some relaxing music for a short nap. This is perfect. Such beautiful harmonies and the sound of the Hammond organ is awesome. Reminds me of the working men's and social clubs in Manchester UK, in the 70's and 80's.
Thanks for sharing! There's SO MUCH going on in this 3 minute segment and it touches the heart on so many levels. So lovely to see this side of Pearl Bailey her reverence and sweetness and giving Ethel Waters the spotlight with grace and humility... Both of them such accomplished and timeless entertainers... We won't see the likes of them again.
ABSOLUTELY, I JUST WATCHED A DUET SHE DID WITH DINAH SHORE AND SHE HAD DINAH GASPING FOR AIR. GREAT REVERENCE SHOW ETHEL. LIKE WHEN STREISAND SANG OVER THE RAINBOW. SHE COULD HAVE BELTED IT OUT BUT SHE PULLED BACK.
2 fantadtic black singers that were uplifting no matter what great songs they were singing with their inimatable styles and voices. gld bless them both
Shirley Mosley She often did that in her early years. Listen to "I Can't Give You Anything But Love." That's a different Pearlie Mae that we see in duet with the former "Sweet Mama Stringbean."
@@opheliumzone4671 Close enough. In a famous screen writer's bio (Moss Hart's if I remember correctly) he tells of going backstage to Ethel's dressing room before a performance of "Member of the Wedding." Miss Waters was there with the rest of the cast for a pre-performance prayer. Young Brandon deWilde was asleep on her lap. It was a truly moving scene. Ethel thanked the Lord for their good health and for the success they were having and probably would continue to have "if only this little bastard don't fuck up."
Thanks morefun2me2! These 2 beauties really ruled the roost, vocally, in the 20s-30s, and 40s-50s! They were both huge stars on Broadway, and did just fine in the movies! Such a treat for me! I've never seen them as a duo. Thanks so much for posting! This is wonderful!
+john e Lawler She was often called Pearlie Mae, with great affection.Loved both, Waters had a very difficult early life, and if I remember right Pearlhad a good life, was a good will ambassador, and happily married....
+mamatibbors cassady I remember one night seeing Pearl and husband Louie Bellson strolling down the street in NYC arm-in-arm. She chatting away and he the attentive listener. They were a striking couple for sure and lit up the block, I'll never forget it.
THIS MAKES ME HAPPY AND SAD AT THE SAME TIME!!! Happy that talent like this existed and that you had to have it to become a star and SAD that although this level of talent still exist, these platforms have long since gone to the dogs. I know KIDS who can do this right now but will never become a celebrity because they don't know how to dumb down to what we now push as talent...
Lovely ladies! I saw Miss Waters in Pinkie with Jean Crane and Ethel Barry more, she gave a wonderful performance, and I've been a fan ever since. ❤ XXX
NOTICE HOW THEY LET THE SONG BREATHE!!! No unnecessary runs, no excessiveness, just good amazing singing.
Whos watching September 2024?.Wonder Full singers 😊
Me, in October '24
Bless her 💗. Ethel Waters looks like somebody's young looking grandmother. She's absolutely beautiful. She aged so gracefully. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

@@John-ok4zh Ethel's faith. She loved the Lord!
I don't think you can watch and listen to these two legends and not smile.
Agreed‼️ ❤
I'm smilin!😄
Thank GOD this still exists! May these legends never be forgot by the next generation.
Rare and absolute joy
Thank you for posting this gem.
Pearl Bailey and Ethel Waters together? I had no idea. Wonderful!
This is how I love to hear sacred songs sung. Todays sings shout and do not enunciate words well enough to be heard or understood. Loved this clip.
OMGosh today's gospel singers make me so angry, they sing every gospel song in a sort of whispery voice like it's a pop love song.
That was really wonderful. Maybe it was my imagination but it seemed like Pearl looked at Ethel with such reverence. Both of them looked so beautiful like the beauty came from deep within and burst out all around.
Pearl Bailey was truly beautiful.
I truly wish they were with us now. What wonderful people and entertainers
I second that.
They ARE "UP THERE".
This brings joy to my spirit you can't help but love these two. #RIPEthelWater#RIPPearlBailey

That was cute how Ethel Waters made her voice deeper in the their duet towards the end .
