I think he believes what he's saying, put yourself in his shoes, I'm guessing he's been training Taichi for most of his life. When you spend so much of your life doing something like that, it becomes a part of your identity. Looking at himself and considering the possibility that maybe, he can't defend himself would be a huge blow to his identity which would mean having to accept he did something that was useless for combat. If I was in his shoes, I would feel pretty worthless and realise that I've wasted a lot of time with very little opportunity at his age to change his direction. Delusion has it's benefits in protecting your ego.
The thing I hate most about this, is that I love Taichi but never knew it was a martial art until my old Kung Fu teacher showed me the application. Not knowing that, I think it's pretty cool like Yoga and is in a much better position to be preserved than Aikido. Unlike Aikido, Taichi movement is more visually solo than Aikido where in Aikido, visually in all of it's practices look combative. Taichi doesn't unless you have someone point it out to you. That may change if Taichi masters keep doing stuff like this where they make claims of being invincible or it's too deadly to spar stuff which just puts off everybody including me who loves traditional martial arts regardless of efficiency.
Maybe this is my irrationality but I suspect that maybe TaiChi could work well if they had a stronger emphasis on sparring. I did hear from Ramsey Dewey that it was a grappling art with codified grappling movements. I'd be interested in seeing a Taichi practitioner who spars a lot fight, just to see if the movement is unique or still resembles kickboxing or normal grappling. If it doesn't then is the intention of those movements to teach abstract principles rather than direct movement? Sorry for anyone reading this, I needed to vent, which requires a long comment.

    • @egontokessy1610
      @egontokessy1610 2 роки тому +1

@Master Dodger I agree, I think if he were to make TaiChi more functional he would need more pressure testing and maybe test the movements live with little to no martial art or fight experience. I'm not sure I understand the part about consensual and non consensual part. Do you mean that his art is more focused on self defense rather than sport, is that what you mean?

Never heard it stated so eloquently. Your statement "...loves traditional martial arts regardless of efficiency", is how I feel about martial arts. I don't care whether traditional Chinese Martial Arts is practical for self-defense or not. The principles, theories, and techniques of the different Traditional Chinese Martial Arts styles are absolutely Beautiful (with a capital 'B'). Even some of the Wushu forms I've seen look nice. And with the power, speed, and agility some of those Wushu athletes demonstrate, I don't think they'll have any trouble defending themselves.

Yea, Tai chi has its use when it comes to stance training, balance, learning how to shift, relaxation and health but it's not really an art you want to be challenging MMA fighters with unless you crosstrain in other martial arts as well. 1. Was clearly better conditioned than him (Excluding Ma Baoguo's internal organs. At least they were, stronger before the fight.).
    2. Was much younger than him. At the time of the fight, Xu Xiaodong was 39 years old, and Mao Baoguo was 69 years old. At some point in his life Xu Xiaodong held a Beijing Sanshou Championship title. Xu's Martial Arts record throughout his life is very impressive. Ma Baoguo was 69 years old.
I see BRAVERY in that. COURAGE... That old man actually went in there to fight a guy 30 years younger than him. He must have some true love for his Tai Chi and Traditional Chinese Martial Arts if he is willing to fight a fighter with the nickname "Maddog".

That's movie lore. There is no way of verifying his fights and even the poisoning is not confirmed. He possibly died of arsenic poisoning but many believe he willing took it as part of traditional herbal remedies for treating a serious, chronic illness where he was coughing up blood. Chinese movie productions sure love to exaggerate for drama and jingoism and is the last place to look for historical facts. That's like watching John Wayne movies and hoping to get a true account of cowboys.

And so, there you go... He REACTED SUPER SLOW. That's all he know! Makes up most of what he know about reacting to a SUPER SLOW BLOW.
I wish every time I had to "Throw" (as in go blow-for-blow) I saw attacks coming at me SUPER SLOW because I don't practice REACTING SLOW. I learned that hard lesson a LONG TIME AGO.

The Tai Chi Master Ma Baoguo lost because he was much weaker and slower than Xu Xiaodong. The conditioning training (training strength, speed, stability, etc.) between these 2 individuals is indeed different. Without knowing much about MMA or Tai Chi, I KNOW that their conditioning methods and training are different.
    Still...
I don't care what style you practice. If you're not fast enough to land a strike on your opponent? If you can't hurt a person with your punch or kick, or have a grip strong enough to hold, lock, or wrestle your opponent, it doesn't matter what technique you use, you will LOSE... Waitaminute... I want to edit my previous statement. After some contemplation on this matter, I think it is WRONG that I stated "you will LOSE". It is actually the kind of ignorance I abhor... I apologize... I'm more comfortable with stating:
I don't care what style you practice. If you're not fast enough to land a strike on your opponent? If you can't hurt a person with your punch or kick, or have a grip strong enough to hold, lock, or wrestle your opponent, it doesn't matter what technique you use, it doesn't matter if you strike and land "Right on the Button" multiple times. The PROBABILITY that you will lose the fight is extremely high. But I still believe that there is always some chance "in the universe" that someone who may look like they're gonna lose will actually win. Win due to the existence of that "1 in a Trillion Chance" that had them winning...
    Let's say:
Mike Tyson Vs Khloé Kardashian. Who would win in the Boxing Ring? My money is on Mike Tyson with my Bookies in this Universe, and the next one. Still, no matter how REMOTE the possibility is, it isn't an IMPOSSIBILITY, and so, there is a REMOTE REMOTE REMOTE Possibility that Khloe Kardashian can defeat Mike Tyson in the ring!
Absolutely useless informatio, and high Probability that it is incorrect...

Not many people can face their shadow. Internally there is conflict. He really had deluded himself into thinking he would win the fight. But then it did not go his way. He is so overwhelmed by this delusion being broken, that part of him genuinely suspects foul play. But another part of him knows this is not true, that he has been lying to himself. So he chooses not to focus or face that. He is very much aware of this game he plays, but he will never look at the game or acknowledge it, he will always avoid it. Because addressing it, would again be facing his shadow and admitting the truth.
He likely hasn't been super vocal about this, because he knows it is not true, so that is why he only tells family or friends - He is looking to reaffirm the lie he is telling himself in others. Each time we see our false image reflected by those around us, we move a further degree from the truth.

Then I watched the energy shield guy fighting on his knees vs a professional fighter. After that, I think they believe but they believe it so hard that the reason for their failure has to come from somewhere other than, this crap I've been dedicating my life to is a sham.

See, the problem is that China has been caught up in so many decades perhaps centuries of this theatre martial art that they’re left disappointed every time they get defeated, blaming themselves for losing the fight RATHER THAN looking closely at the style of ‘fighting’ and acknowledging that it is a meditative movement rather than meant for combat.
And this is why mostly older people do this rather than youngsters.

  • @truebeliever786

It's kinda sad. Look at it from his perspective. After losing that badly to an amateur, the only logical conclusion is that he's wasted decades of his life on pseudo-combat... So the only way to cope with that is to be in denial.

    Really nice vid!
I guess putting any doubt out there, as this interviewee does, can confuse an issue for some observers.
Also, as people are commenting below, real situations can feel quite different. Maybe one way of looking at it is that someone who I've never seen before (I guess!) can suddenly appear in public, yell something at me, and give me a really horrible feeling that can linger, despite no physical contact. Same with an animal threat, even with no actual contact, showing that it's not just a human to human issue. The body seems to react in certain ways, not too mention with regard to "emotions" and "spiritual areas," both of which I believe can be very important.
So, if ~ as some are suggesting ~ this gentleman has little simulated or real confrontation experience, no wonder he could feel like he's poisoned. Whether that's true or comes from a movie plot, as people also suggest, I believe are points also worth discussing... I'd make a guess as to the veracity, but will leave it to others to draw what they think is most likely also.
Maybe fights can also appear easier than what happens in real situation or competition such as this.
Thanks, Jerry, for the work here!
