That Tu-22 plane crash happened on January 2019 in Murmansk Russia near Finland. The bomber was on a training mission with a crew of 4, the report that I read said that the plane experienced some “trouble”. A special type of almost impossible to predict severe arctic storm developed causing a dangerous blizzard. The crew tried to land at an airbase near Olenegorsk where it crashed. 2 of the crew did survive according to the report. Not sure what exactly happened but the plane’s rate of decent looked really high. You would think in those weather conditions you would be using a precision landing system with an instrument glide path that would keep you from smacking into the runway. Who knows, but that was a grizzly crash.

Love it!!! Currently serving Army officer here and I still believe I was cheated from my childhood dream (from 1990) of being an Air Force pilot. It all worked out with the cool ground combat stuff, but I really love this. Cheers, and happy holidays❤️

Another great interview with defense aviation fountain of knowledge, Pako. He's definitely one of my go to sources of information. It's really bizarre hearing the breakdown of these complex and expensive contracts to build some of our most advanced fighters, the politics, the money, the setbacks, and then realize, we only have one hundred and forty odd bombers, because we've been focused on other needs.

I love the Merge....Both of your pod casts are really incredible...I do look back at some of your other podcasts....when I have the time...Rain, I have to catch up yet...and Pako...I really like your style...well, I really like both of your styles...your content is really good...informative, interesting...I love Jello's podcast as well...this is content that is missing from our collective consciousness...I have learned more from you guys, than from just watching and reading the news...or from other sources...I feel much better about our military, than I did before...yeah there are problems, but it seems to be in the civilian sector...anyway...keep on going...I look forward to the twice weekly Merge...which by the way, is a really good source of info as well...

Yes, army people do watch and enjoy this ... well retired army. 21y 7m. Yes, the acronym system is a point of humor for us too. As for upgrades to the different AF toys, it can be done on the cheap by using the same Xbox controller you use in the rear with the one you have in the jet. Splash. ;)

i like to hear about procurement. The biggest reason that i see that projects never come in on-time and on-budget is that the DOD or the politicians change the target often. It has seemed to be that way for the last 30-40 years. They need to solidify the target early in the program. That is how i see it and no i am not a person in the industry.

Yeah the F-35 software/IP issue is a real bear. I know USAF is locked into those crazy contracts for support; how are partner nation customers handling the anticipated cost of supporting F-35s if they're gonna use ALIS and they are unable to develop local solutions (besides IDF, of course)? Everyone focuses on how much "cheaper" F-35's current tranche is vs what the procurement cost used to be, but that $85 million number is kind of a mirage and is literally peanuts compared to how much it will cost small nations like Netherlands and Belgium to keep airframes flying AND fund Pratt's engine core upgrade, Block 4 upgrade, etc. If nations opt out, THEN we'll see islands of orphan jets develop as the program fragments.

Don't understand the lack of common sense in the Pentagon.
So the CAF only wants to keep 99 F-15Es and the higher ups have cut the buy of the much higher performing EX to 104 for the ANG, which will not fully utilize all of its capability anyway.
Why wouldn't you replace the Es with EX in the CAF and give the ANG the Es for their limited QRA role? If you want to globally deploy them, you can upgrade them with EX features like South Korea will do.
Then when the Es time out in a decade or so, cycle the EXs back into the ANG when the CAF has the latest and greatest post 2035.
    Clearly I'm missing something.

I came across a short from this channel and I want to see more of that podcast.
Commenters are frustrated in the comments section of that short for NOT being able to find the podcast.
    I just tried myself....
How can you guys not have the episode number displayed on your thumbnails OR your titles OR the description boxes... I don't even see the pilots name the story was about!!
How many videos do I have to click on just to find the one episode? too many.
    Im leaving.
    SO FRUSTRATING.
