Glenn, Most of the TA-02 kits i built had gear front ball rear diffs, some came with a front one-way diff (TA02 Racing Special Chassis #58157) and a few had gear diffs front & rear. Great Build my friend, i gotta say, im liking the looks of that kit now. AWESOME JOB!!!!
@@ventisette. Im not a 100% sure on the rear gear diff, Thinking the SVT Mustang, again im not a 100% sure, i just cant remember back to the early 80's. If you find out, let me know.
Yeah that’s was always the setup on the TA02/01 front gear diff and rear ball diff you could put a one way bearing in place of the front diff gears as a hop-up or keep the gear diff and do the torque splitter (one way bearing on the front input gear) quite a departure from what they are doing now on TC’s which is typically a rear gear diff which is tuned with different oils and a locked front diff
I believe the ta02t, in the form of the Chevy c10, Toyota Prerunner and the similarly bodied “desert fielder” trucks, all had the same rear ball diff and front gear diff setup. Well, I know for a fact the desert fielder did, as it was one of my very first builds, 10 or so years ago. I must say, I did enjoy building those ball diffs, but honestly did not see the point. Great Lancia btw. Really pretty.
Hey Glenn by the way, on the ta02 those dog bones in The rear have so much play to the inside in the inner joint cups, that the joint cups can go outside a little bit, and this can cause the joint cup teeth to strip the teeth inside the diff. There are 2 tips I1. Get the trf bushings 53577 and shove them under the dogbones on the diff side. This will prevent the joint cups from going outside. At first it's tight but it will settle. This tip is from the German race series "rck Kleinserie" that have a ta02 Porsche cup. 2. Put a bit of loctite or similar on the joint cups like you do on a top force evo.
Good morning Glen!!! Super cool!!!! Loving it! I kinda like the bumper on. Makes it look more rugged. I don’t know but something about it I like! Looking forward to the next few videos on this one. Never seen a cockpit done so it will be interesting. Thanks buddy!
Can't wait to see the finished car Glenn, its got such a great presence and with that iconic paint scheme and history behind it, it will be well worth it!
Aww Glenn I honestly think this is the dirt build I’ve seen you do and did not fully ball rest it.. if you ever need any bearings let me know I’ll send you whatever you need. I have to ball rest every build wether i shelf it or not because it feels like I’m depriving it lol yeah I’m weird like that. Also my TA02 is great for jumping with the stock CVAs. I used 3 hole pistons and hard oil. Perfect

That is one of Tamiya nicer kit. Hard body, cockpit and those hood lights, nice. The decals will be fun, almost like your Porsche. Only thing I am not crazy about is the black front "bumper" and the rear spoiler seems a bit big.
Thanks James yeah I couldn’t agree more buddy, I think I said on the first video, this has to be one of the best kits they’ve done in the last 15 years or so 🤩👊🏻
Got mine finished! I don’t know if it’s possible to get the stripes to look remotely decent without the soap method and lots of massaging with a hair dryer. It’s worth the effort though! Now it’s too pretty to drive though. 😩 One annoyance is that the battery compartment is oval shaped for nickel cells. I was able to cut away enough material to fit hard case 2s lipo packs so it’s not a huge deal. I hope your build is coming along. I’m a rookie at this so your videos are a huge help.
Amazing! Coincidentally, I just started my own build of this gorgeous machine yesterday. I can’t wait to see the next installment. The body really does demand a lot of labor but it’s also one of the most amazing looking RCs when done right (in my opinion at least).

I absolutely love that Lancia bodyshell, it looks drop dead gorgeous even unpainted! I would love to get one, but in the UK the kits are currently around £180-200, so it'll have to wait a little while. Besides which I need to plan how I'm going to do the bodyshell, it won't be box art, that's for sure....
Really good video and Im so looking forward to seeing this run. The shell is going to look epic!!👍 Anyhoo, hope you are well and doing your best to stay cool. 🧊
Great car with amazing history. Yeah, all TA02's I've built have the same diff setup (DTM AMG, TA02T, BMW 318i and 037). Only the Racing Special has a front one way instead of a diff. On this one though that black bumper needs to go once it goes on the shelf.
Hey again! So I fitted the shorter curved front bumper. The recommended one is too hideous. I also had to remove the rear bumper to get the stance I want. By the way, the TA03s also have a ball diff that goes in the rear and gear diff in the front. I purchased an additional TA03 ball diff for the *front* of my 037.
I have most of my ta03rs the same way, ball diff in the rear, gear diff in the front. I like oversteer. Plus torque control unit with smaller pinion on the rear end of the belt, together with one-way. By the way, Ta03 has 2 gear diffs in standard kit Form, except for the pro (2 ball diffs) and the trf (1 ball diff in the rear) versions.
@@aut0bahn wow nice car. Interesting that you did that. Did you put the one way to the back? Does the gear diff with the one way unit have a diff effect under power or is it like a spool under power? How does yours drive now compared to stock?
@@simong7310 ugh! I am an idiot. It wasn’t the TRF. It definitely has the one way out front. It was my TA03F….I had another ball diff and put it up front even though it was recommended for the rear. Jeez. But now that you mention it, I have put a one way in the back on my loaded TL01 (58255). I don’t like how the cars brake heading into a hard corner with the one way up front so I tried to move it out back. Still has AWD but now under braking it will not spin out. I haven’t tried it yet with the TL01 (all of my cars are shelf queens) but I did that with another driver car I had once and it worked great!
I wonder if the different diffs is because of how they function? From what I understand, the ball diff is a limited slip, whereas the gear one isn't. That way the rear can basically always put down power, but the front can loosen up when it needs to.
Nice build Glenn, really looking forward to seeing it finished and a run video👌. It looks like a hammer head shark with the bumper on😂 Thanks for sharing your video mate👍🦘🇦🇺
Looks great Glenn. I agree that it is odd that they did 2 different dif types. Maybe just another case of Tamiya using up their spare parts. Who knows. Either way, looks awesome.
The Porsche 911gt2 on the ta02sw is the same diff-wise as you might know. Actually the 58277 ta03r trf and 58243 ta03 rs trf have a similar setup, with only rear ball diff, although the gear diff in the front does contain a one way unit on those. Also the racers said back in the days that you should only put 1 ball diff in the rear on a ta03(f) and not in the front, other ways it will push (understeer). The way I see it, a gear diff (one without oil, old style tamiya) is generally rather loose, whilst a ball diff is generally more tight. Ball diffs thus give a similar reaction as a limited slip diff in a real car: not all power is given only to the unloaded wheel. So you have more power on the ground. Now if you put this to the front, the car will react more like a front wheel drive. So opposedly putting a ball diff in The rear gives strong on- (and off-) throttle power on the rear wheels, making it act more like a rwd car. This is emphasized by putting the rather loose gear diff in the front. This will make the front end more willing to turn in, thus give lots of steering, a sharp turn in and a mild corner exit, as not both front wheels are pulled so much under acceleration as with a ball diff. So the car will be turning more aggressively, be direct, agile and nimble. If you put 2 ball diffs, it will probably be more understeery both off power ( corner entry) and on power (corner exit). Unfortunately you can not make a different setting for on and off power, as you do in a real car. The closest to that is the newest "active" diff by xray. Which works with some ramp angle inserts. On and off are two different stories. Generally I think Tamiya will not sacrifice this important decision of crucial baseline setup of what diffs are where for parts being left over.
