  • Eltje Malzbender was on a training ride when she was struck by a car and left for dead on a remote Waikato road. The resulting head injury affected her emotions, her speech, her sight and robbed her of her one real passion, cycling. But a dogged dedication to rehabilitation has produced results no one expected.

    She was the one I wanted to see an update on so badly. I seem to remember that they were very concerned about her house in the last episode due to many stairs and hanging bikes,etc. it appears she may have moved to make things more accessible for her? She has come such a long way. Hope to see her compete one day in the Paralympics. Thanks so much!

    As an athlete I couldn't imagine having my physical abilities taken away from me so suddenly. It's one of he biggest parts of who I am, my identity is wrapped up in my physical strength and ability. The depression must be so deep and dark for her. Honestly I don't know if I could be strong enough to get through something like this. She is an amazing woman, just to keep trying and living life is more than most could do.

    • @ByeByeBelly
      @ByeByeBelly 5 років тому +2

      Ageing, injury and something more "simple" like chronic fatigue syndrome can take all that away pretty quickly. You shouldn't place much of your identity in your physical abilities because they can easily be lost.

    • @todydn
      @todydn 4 роки тому

      I agree with the other person if your whole identity is wrapped up in your physically being life ends with your body her mind is and always has been stronger tour de France riders aren't just physical I'd say they are closer to 80% mental

      There are so many competitive adaptive sports available today that a person can usually find a way to remain an athlete, even a pro, after a TBI or SCI. These are now usually introduced early in rehabilitation, so most people can transition from able-bodied to disabled much quicker and more thoroughly than people did when I was disabled decades ago. But yeah, suddenly being unable to compete at the most elite levels probably is a huge blow. But people overcome it and lead happy lives if they keep that spark alive.

      She was! I had the enormous privilege to work under her as a caregiver...she would set the physio program & I would follow thru with the exercises she had set for the resident...she allowed me to question why this exercise etc..she always took the time to explain why & to break it down into layman's terms for me! Know she is very much missed!

    Since getting my TBI seven years ago, I haven't stopped recovering. I always have goals but often I get depressed and feel defeated by my difficulties. Eltje is such a positive light. I can relate to these things she's going through, but she's such an amazing encouragement. I hope she never stops believing in her recovery. Never believe -this is all I will ever be. Just because doctors say after six months or three years this is as good as can ever expect to be. RUBBISH. Utter rubbish to say. Hope and determination can overcome a lot of things, including attitude, which is huge when you have brain injury. If I believed those things, I would have given up long ago, but it can be detrimental to morale hear.
