    Ronnie, as he's known in the antiques trade is not really a dealer, nor an auctioneer. As an antique dealer myself, I and others have known him for thirty years as simply a 'runner'. That means that he never actually sold from a shop, an exhibition space like a fair or from an arcade, because he couldn't afford the rent, but hawked his goods around from dealer to dealer where they were, hoping they might buy something from him. That makes him bottom of the antiques pile. Always had more to say for himself than any talent he might have would justify, he must have at some point cosied up to the BBC, who saw an opportunity for box ticking, and elevated him to the illustrious Roadshow. I imagine this situation is a careful and artful contrivance to make him seem like the hero of the hour, yet at any other time in his career, I'd imagine he'd have been grateful for anything that at least he had a collector for, as items like this do have a market..........

      But he's not hired as a stamp expert on the Antiques Roadshow, is he? So I don't care whether he bends over backwards in his spare time, and picks up a stamp on the end of his nose.
      He's spent his pre AR employment running antiques to dealers, not dissimilar to those he likes to bore people with on the AR. That's the relevant point, not your irrelevant attempt at a diversion ...........

Whilst I agree that it’s a pretty horrible artefact I found it quite disturbing that an expert refused to value something they didn’t like. As for the lady that brought it who knows how far, well, I suppose she will have had an interesting journey home. All seems to tie in with the way the show has evolved over the last year or two. I've seen the Antiques Roadshow give valuations on pieces from Nazi Germany. There are two possibilities here. If it was just by chance that this object ended up infront of this man then he is within his rights to say I have historical connections to this piece and I personally don't feel comfortable valuing it then that's fine, if someone had dark history tied to the Soviet Union and didn't feel comfortable valuing a piece from a Stalin gulag then that's understandable. However, if the show intentionally did this ( which I imagine they did ) then thats an issue. If this was all planned for TV then that's outrageous. Get someone who will value it.

    • @former9085
      @former9085 4 місяці тому +1

      It can only be intentional. There were many other objects there to be valued. There was no need to humiliate the woman who brought it in either. That could have been cut from the episode anyway. This went through editing, so the inclusion was intentional.

    Interestingly, as well as the slavery act of 1833, the 1833 Factory Act was implemented. This act decreed that no child under the age of 9 should work in the factories. No children aged between 9 and 13 should work longer than 9 hours a day. My ancestors were child workers, crawling under the machinery in the silk factories, piecing together broken threads. Children were working from dawn to dusk on the streets of London selling watercress, matches and other things, to make a few pennies for the family. Usually in ragged clothes and often shoeless and in all weathers. That never gets mentioned anywhere.

    Given that all exhibitors are arranged and vetted before filming, it is obvious that the BBC deliberately thrust this poor woman at someone they knew would react in that manner! So glad I don't pay their licence tax.

    One would never hear an appraiser say; " I can't value that Roman coin because the Roman European slave trade was ten times as extensive as the Transatlantic slave trade", because there is zero virtue to be signalled in that statement, white Europeans exercise common sense, don't play the race victimhood card and don't blame anyone alive today for historical events that happened hundreds of years ago. At least he highlighted that the artefact belonged to a black slave trader, which is very unlike the BBC, they'll probably sack him!

    I found this episode rather disappointing.The man making the appraisal, could have been a little more professional, without the throat clearing.I guess given his ancestor's history as a freed slave in Sierra Leone, it felt personal.
    If a Nazi helmet had turned up, would we have had a disclaimer, distancing the BBC from the horrors of Adolf Hitler?I don't think that the UK public need a lecture on the horrors of slavery,having outlawed it 200 years ago.

    I’ve noticed over the last couple of years how woke the antique roadshow has become. Another program I’ve watched from the beginning falls to these ludicrous pious individuals particularly after Ronnie Archer-Morgan joined. I’m also certain I’m not the only person to have noticed the trend of sending ‘celebrities’ off to tour America who are obliged to be taken around some slave museum and banging on about how dreadful we are. It’s sooooo tiring!

    Maybe he was embarrassed that the person who owned the disc was originally a Nigerian slave TRADER! I read an article, a few years ago, about a Nigerian person who looked into their ancestry and was devastated that their great grandfather was a slave trader - selling his own black people to the European slave traders! And Blacks want reparations from us - they should seek it first from Nigeria and other African nations which sold their own into slavery!
