ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Ambassador Husain Haqqani is a Hudson Institute Senior Fellow and Director for South and Central Asia. He is also Co-Chair of its Project on the Future of the Muslim World as well as co-editor of the journal ‘Current Trends in Islamist Ideology published from Washington DC. Ambassador Husain Haqqani served as Pakistan's ambassador to the United States from 2008-2011 and was an advisor to four Pakistani Prime ministers. His latest book Reimagining Pakistan: The Transformation of a Dysfunctional Nuclear State was released in April 2018.
H. R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is also the Bernard and Susan Liautaud Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute and lecturer at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. He was the 26th assistant to the president for National Security Affairs. Upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1984, McMaster served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army for thirty-four years before retiring as a Lieutenant General in June 2018.

Haqqani is right. Pakistan has been confused about its identity since its inception. That’s because its founders didn’t really have a vision for enabling that country to prosper in a sustainable way and play a role as a responsible nation, regionally and globally. Pakistan always wants competition against India, but not in a friendly, healthy way. It’s like a kid with a complex who indulges in substances and bad company.
There is no excuse for our ongoing ignorance of the significant importance of the histories, cultures and ethos of India, Pakistan, China and Central Asia. We have the finesse of an ignorant Gulliver stamping about over countries and civilizations expecting positive results.

An amazing discussion
Good discussion. Ambassador Haqqani is right that Pakistan always wants to compete against India because it does not understand its identity. It wanted a Muslim nation carved out of undivided India in 1947, but India has a Muslim minority almost as large as the entire population of Pakistan. It still demands Kashmir, but Kashmir has always been a part of India’s civilizational heritage for millennia and has not only Muslims, but a region like Jammu with a Hindu and Sikh majority, and a region like Ladakh with a Tibetan Buddhist majority. The erstwhile ruler of Kashmir signed a treaty of accession with India in 1948. Since 2019, Kashmir’s status of temporary autonomy ended, and it was fully integrated with the rest of India. But Pakistan still occupies parts of Kashmir.like Gilgit and Baltistan.
Pakistan could not win a conventional war against India, and so uses jihadi terrorism to constantly attack India. It’s close partnership with China is aimed against India, their common enemy. But India has remained a stable, pluralist democracy for more than 70 years.
An extremely good informative discussion about Pakistan. Husein Haqqani gives an objective and thoughtful summary of Pakistan. Worth watching (or listening to).
As an Indian, allow me to convey my disappointment at the absence of any mention of the outcomes of each of those wars:p

The ambassador's dictum for U.S. foreign relations can also be rephrased to apply to U.S. domestic relations. American citizens are not a problem for the federal government to solve. They are a community for government leaders to understand (and leave alone).
I don't quite get it. Even if the primary geopolitical objective was broad competition with India, wouldn't it still make sense to strive towards economic prosperity and thus provide for a stronger military?

Jammu and Kashmir is not a disputed territory. Jammu and Kashmir is integral part of Republic of India , one of the 28 States and 8 Union Territories.
