For anyone studying for certifications like SEC+, please study for knowledge retention and not just to get that piece of paper. The cert will help secure interviews, but knowing the information in depth will help carry you through the interviews. Learn from my early mistakes. I passed SEC+ in a rush and couldn't get any jobs. I then buckled down and studied CySA+, intending to learn as the end goal and landed my first job as a SOC Triage/IR analyst. I've now moved up, passed my CISSP, and am starting WGU next month and intend to finish in 6 months. Will be tough at times, but focus on continuous improvement, and you will get to where you want to be.
Definitely have to know what’s going on with those servers because if not, you just a nurse looking for an orientation in which that doesn’t exist with information tech jobs.
I've been in school for about the last 9 months and wrapping up. I've had 2 interviews so far and my road-block has been not having practical experience. Thank you for laying out what to do.
Thank you for making all of these videos! I’ve decided to start down the WGU path and I’m looking into doing all the FREE moderstates clep tests, then doing the rest of the classes with Sophia.
Holy hikers Josh, I just really gotta thank you for the site with all the practice questions 🙏 I'm scheduled to take my A+ Core 1, Network+, and CC exams next week using some school exam vouchers and the free "1 Million" ISC2 attempt at the Certified in Cybersecurity exam. Your example questions in Anki with Professor Messer UA-cam videos have been super helpful with my studies. And I'll post about my results and how it went on May 20th!
Completely forgot about this, but I passed the A+ and CC, and am officially certified for both! Failed my first attempt at Network-plus, but I retake it in about a week, so I have a bit more time to prepare. Wish me luck!!
I am investing in your cyber course at the end of the month, and currently, I've been combining your SEC+ Anki deck with Professor Messer for my studies. The goal is to find work by August 1st
Hi Josh! I just landed a job as an IT analyst, that includes duties in IAM and with SOC! It’s been a long journey, but I am thankful for your role in my journey, starting with finishing my bachelor’s from WGU. I regularly watch your videos and gain so much helpful insight. I am so excited for my journey to start but am facing a bit of imposter syndrome before I start work.😅 Hope that I live up to the importance of my role! Thanks again for motivating me!❤️🤗
Daaaang thank you for the update. Big congratulations to you :). People who can feel imposter syndrome end up doing a pretty good job-I'm sure you will too, just do your best without burning out :)
I applied at my current job for an internal position that opened up as a analyst. I already helped the security team on a project before so maybe I have the inside track when it comes to social network
Hi Josh, thanks for all the great content. I've been working as an external IT Auditor for the last 18 months at a "Big 8" accounting firm, but would like to pivot full time into Cybersecurity. I don't mind continuing to work in a GRC capacity, but I believe your hands on course and internship would still be very beneficial to do. My question is regarding how to frame this on my resume. If I currently have a job, and want to put the Cyber course internship on there as well, how do I frame this in the experience section so as to not confuse potential employers in the hiring process going forward? Also, is 2 pages max too much for a resume?
Question for you Josh: As an experienced IT professional recruiters and hiring managers will probably check my most recent job experiences. If I have not worked in in Cybersecurity role before, but I complete projects such as your hands on course, how can I list this as valid experience instead of under a “Project” section that will probably be skipped over during a resume review?
i would definitely do that if i were you...especially if you are going to a brick and mortar school the IT Dept is the place to hit for that . Years ago i wish i had done that but never thought of it at the time as i was in a computer tech bootcamp center and at the same time i was working at a UNIVERSITY 🥴talk about missing the mark. oh well you live n learn. Please do take advantage if you can
Great video! Would you consider doing follow up interviews with some of your course graduates at some interval of time, like 1 year, 2 years, etc? Sometimes I look them up and they have continued to build out a solid LinkedIn page, but haven't moved from their entry level position and I'd be curious to know why and the implications for career progression.
Oh yeah sure, that's a good idea! Actually just did a bunch more interviews and one of them was a past interviewee, I'll try to do some more in the future :)
Hey Josh, I did fill out for the free practice comp+A for IT and the news letter. I never received it I checked my spam and did it a few times. Any other suggestions to be able to receive the Anki deck? Thank you!
Thank you form this video. The information here is extremely helpful. I do have a question that’s been on my mind, and I can’t find a lot of information on it. Does one need to take polygraph test to work in cybersecurity?
Like when I'm applying to jobs? I just apply on those mainstream sites, like LinkedIn, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, though I'm doing some research into this new for the new community
My title is infosec and IT generalist, it's a L2 position though we focus on security far more than just plain support. The biggest hurdle I'm finding is that despite having two certifications, a BA, and around five YoE I just don't live in an area where the jobs are plentiful. I'm priced out of most major metro areas and finding affordable rentals in decent areas seem to be very difficult. If say my first job is SOC analyst, and the pay is only 65k living in Denver metro or SoCal, that money will not do very well there. The other is wanting better work-life balance as I'm much older and don't have the energy for working nights/weekends/holidays at the drop of a hat in case of a breach. So those kind of first responder jobs don't apply for me, I'm looking at more GRC or even in cyber education.
so does your hands-on course + internship have both offensive and defensive skills that will prepare me for senior roles like security engineer and security architect
It will help a bit in the sense that there is an OK PCI DSS Section. However I'm going to make a GRC Specific package in the future. If you don't wanna wait, the current one will help though, at least a bit :)
I have actually given up on searching for jobs. I am in Ghana and I have done the necessary certifications and yet job hunting has been one of the hardest. 😢
One module away from finishing the Google cyber security certification. Why do i feel nervous. The course was definitely good, I feel like there wasn't enough hands on practice though
I left formal education after class 12 /college in Pakistan after that I started self learning and passed CC Exam and get Google professional Cybersecurity certificate and studying for CompTIA security exam do i need bachelor degree to get my first Cybersecurity job?😢
Do you have any thoughts on getting hands on certifications like the CSDA or Blue team level 1? I’m trying land a job as a SOC analyst. I’m working to add more projects on my resume but was also thinking about pursuing one of those certs.
Hello I'm in the process of obtaining the following for 3 certifications from SANS ... SEC275 Foundations & GFACT Certification... The second course you will take is SEC401 Security Essentials & GSEC Certification.... The third and final course you will take is SEC504 Incident Handling & GCIH Certification ... hi josh im really new to tech field and interested in cybersceurity so should I start with IT helpdesk first then switch it to cyber or i can move straight way to cyber?
hey josh i am trying to make my way into a career in cyber security from the bottom up, would you recommend this course or the course careers it one that you have for best results? thanks!
Hello Josh, Please my question is what prep work is there for Masters level at WGA Cybersecurity Program. background is BS is Psychology. Then worked as front Software engineer for 2.5 years, then Technical Product manager for 1.5 years. 3 months of that was for a cybersecurity company.
Funny you should ask! I’m making some GRC centric stuff now. The current course has a lot of GRC in the theory section, but the lab portion is more security operations ☺️
Hi guys, bit of a stab in the dark here. Im currently trying to break into the tech world and it's proving difficult. I have my pentest+, network+, security+ and have completed a few home projects and all the right stuff. Only problem is I have no prior industry experience and am having to gain it at home as no one is willing to take a junior😂 does anyone have any advice? Or stories of how they got there first 'in'? Thanks
i think if you do not enjoy your job and just doing it for the money, you will get burnout easily. so, might as well look for a job that you will enjoy ^^
Quick question about your course is it gonna be recorded videos or is it gonna be hands on where we can talk to you and ask you questions and maybe do a one on one video call at least once throughout the course?

Awesome video Josh. I'm glad that you're uploading often again! Thank you.

You might want to put the section on "security projects" closer to the top of your resume.
Josh,
Another 💎. Thank you for all you do ❤
Another one!! 🔥
Prof. Josh, 👍
If your currently doing a computer science degree, should you focus on getting a help desk job on the side or cybersecurity internships?

Very helpful. Thanks 🎉🎉
It's so hard to get a job in cybersecurity. There are a lot ng recruitment gate keepers and most of the "entry level" requires 1-2 years experience.
Do you have a roadmap to follow on certification to gain for cybersecurity roles ?
I have an Associate in Network Technician and Bachelor in Management Info. Systems but never got hired in I.T or Cyber Sec.
Hey Josh, have you heard of Dakota State University's Cyber Operations B.s. wanted to see what you thoughts on that degree are compared to WGU.
Hey, yes! I’ve heard of DSU, it’s really good. I was thinking to apply to their PhD program a while back
Are you going to create a class to get into grc?
Hey Josh, where do you typically send your resume for potential jobs interviews?

GRC is a good place to look because many people will not go into because it is not glamorous
