  • The Wing Sung 601A has features the make it unique to the modern fountain pen offerings. Yet, it harkens back to beloved styles of yesteryear. The filling system is also different that what we are currently used to. It's a nice writer, and at it's reasonable price point it's hard to pass up.

That style nib was also available on som Sheaffer Imperials with the Touchdown and maybe also the Snorkel like my Imperial II.

I have three 601As. The first was my make mistakes with it trying to correct a quality control issue -- a barrel slipped off the piston of the vacuum fill. Fixed it. It has an "exposed" nib. The second has a conical nib, like the one you show us. I too found that I had to tune it vigorously, with the brass shim and some coarse paper bag (micromesh for people on a budget) smoothing. Still a bit scratchy, but very good for extra fine writing on ledgers. My last (so far) attempt is brushed metal exactly like yours, except that the section also is brushed metal, and the nib, exposed and not conical, claims to be solid 14k. Writes that way, I must say. I believe that "Wing Sung", however they may style themselves, "inherited" in the late 1940s Parker assets in China, and so might not be so much imitators as other offspring of Parker (which I've heard now is Chinese, too). In any case, this style of pen was made for people to take to work and use. These iterations fulfil that task admirably.

I didn't appreciate having to do so much nib work, but in the end, it was worth it.

If you do not mind my asking. Did tuning it make you more attached to the pen?

Yep, it has been a nice writing pen ever since.

Isn't the clip design patented by Parker?

Absolutely. I wish they would have tried to do something unique.

Sorry, I didn't read your question quite right. As far as a clip patent, if Parker was able to copyrights the clip style, that might have expired by now. Some patents and copyrights expire after a certain period of time, and they become public domain, or something like that. Plus, Parker made a variety of arrow clips over time, so I don't know how they could challenge someone else for using an arrow design, since it may be ever so slightly different than any of the Parker clips. Here's a link that shows parkers various arrow clips: dirck.delint.ca/beta/?page_id=5288
