  • In this video I overhaul the ZF S5D 320Z 5 speed from my E36. This transmission is a pretty robust simple gearbox but it's major achilles heal is the tendency for the 5th gear and reverse detents to get stuck or stick in the bores. While the transmission is out it made sense to go ahead and replace the detents. It's a pretty straight forward job but the 5th gear and reverse detent caps/liner bushings can be a pain point in the operation.

Are the detent springs/pins/caps the same for a Getrag 250 5spd? (The other manual trans found in e46 bmws)

Thanks for the vedio and congratulations. I have a problem with may BMW e36 Getrag. It is hard to enter first gear. That means most of the times after shifting the first gear, when I release the clutch, I hear a grinding noise and pressure on the gear shift. But when I shift the gear quickly and thoroughly it works very nicely. Can you please help me to solve this.

On my 5spd I also have another one next to 5th and reverse. It leaks fluid out of there. Any idea what it is and if I can replace it too?

The additional detent on ZF 310/320Z transmissions is p/n 23311224823. Usually it's not an issue but if the cover for it is weeping it would make sense to replace it. You'll need to order the cap, p/n 23311224825, and snap ring, p/n 23317531374, separately. You can reuse the compression spring however.
