Chuck Dorset!!! I swear man, you need to make more videos and when doing that branch out and make more videos cause I could watch and learn from you all day, you the man Chuck!!
Great vid dude...thankx!
Thanks for these great videos! You're pinpointing all kinds of problems I ran into. I'll probably be watching all of them. You made me smile at the 'working late' part. Don't want to wake up the neighbors. 😁 Thanks again!
Glad you like them!
@@WeaverLeatherSupply what's not to like? Can't thank you enough for the numerous tips and tricks you share. Some are "yeah! I knew that", some are "pfew, I thought I was stupid, but we all have the same struggles" and most: "oh, nice! Gonna remember that [actually taking notes]"
🙏🙏🙏
What an awesome video! Great job Chuck!
I just found a marble slab in a free pile by the road like an hour ago!! Problem solved!
That's awesome! Those are the best finds 👍
That was the pigeon swap

Excellent tips,I will be punching letters into leather and I will use this advice for surfaces when I do. Thank you!
Thanks for the info. just starting out needed some pointers .
Thank You.
When money is tight and a cheap cutting/ punching surface is needed... i have used (and still do for quick work.. a fiber board type wall panelling.. the back is smooth, its about 1/4 inch thick..
I can almost break this stuff with my hands, it's basicly a high end cardboard type product.. even my finest set diamond stitching irons remain sharp and undamaged... it is very much a disposable surface. But, I use scrap pieces.. so they are free to me... if I see a damaged sheet marked down for clearance in the store.. I buy it.
Wife yelled at me, so now I'm here.

Would a truck mudflap work as a cutting surface?
Does the type of stone make a difference? I see granite and marble mentioned a great deal but I got a quartz remnant from a countertop manufacturer that seems to work pretty well too. I assume all you need is a dense stone with a smooth surface but I'm a noob so I may well be missing something.
Hi Emelye,
You are correct, dense stone with a smooth surface is all you need. Quartz is a great option!
Hi, I am just wondering what surface you would recommend for dyeing the leather? Great videos, thanks 😀
Hi Miriam!
I like to lay down a some plastic, I usually just use a folded garbage bag and then some packing paper or cardboard on top of that. The packing paper will keep the dye from pooling and the plastic will keep the dye from staining the surface you're working on. I explain it a little bit more in this video: ua-cam.com/video/gT95axrxn-U/v-deo.html
@@WeaverLeatherSupply sorry for the late reply. Thanks so much for getting back to me with that good information 😀 Your videos are brill!!
Hopefully you are still monitoring comments here 😊
Would a solid 2-3" concrete surface work in place of the granite slab? If not, why not? Or how about a 2" concrete layer with a 1/2-1" top layer of marble floor tiles with no grout gaps?
I am trying to make a u-shaped work table to teach large groups of students and I am tired of hauling 15-20 individual slabs in and out of storage. Additionally, I often find the slabs awkward to work with for larger stamped projects, and they end up with weird bend/crease lines. So a completely solid surface would be ideal.
My concern here is that the entire table might be too bouncy with 4-5 students pounding on it at the same time. I plan on mounting it to a heavy duty solid 2x4 top with 4x4 base supports, would that be sufficient? Should I add a layer of the poundo foam between the wood and concrete/stone top? I don't care at all about noise, only with stability.
I would do a solid granite surface but...well...that's pricey and we are a non-profit. 😊 I was hoping concrete (polished smooth) might be an acceptable (and cheaper!) alternative.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Hi Jaelyn.
I am with on toting those slabs around!!! What a backbreaker! I can’t give you an honest answer here, but, a base of concrete with a tile that’s closer to 1” and grout between the two should work very well. That sounds like a good slab! The concrete alone, even polished, may chip pretty easily making them unusable pretty quickly. It’s dense but not terribly strong. With toting these around being such a problem I went to a Marble Counter Top company (they’re everywhere) and got them to cut ten 6” x 10” pieces for me so I could cut down on the weight I have to move around. It was very inexpensive ($6.00 each or something like that?) since they can cut these out of scrap and end cuts and recover some waste. Also, they have the pieces that are cut out for sinks (rounds, ovals…) and this can be waste for them too. Being a non-profit they may be happy to pitch something in!
What video should I start at? My skill set ha, I have made a rough vallet tray and a rougher wet molded pocket slit with grommets not stitched
Hi Ray,
Most of the project videos do not require stitching so they are fairly simple to follow along. Bracelets and cuffs are always an easy one to start with ua-cam.com/video/e1nhpJb6XNM/v-deo.html or if you are looking for something a little more advanced you could do the arm guards ua-cam.com/video/31CqelRgm7M/v-deo.html

Cutting board doesn't dull your punches? I would think a thick piece of leather or some end grain wood will be gentler on tools and punches. Wouldn't that be better for your tools than hard plastic?
Hello,
Both of those work well to protect punches but the cutting boards are designed to be soft enough to protect the edge and so that a punch will sink in ever so slightly if hit too hard.
What is the best way to cut leather that is laminated to rubber and foam rubber? I want a clean cut right now I'm pretty janky.
Joe,
Let’s see if we can get a good fix for you. We may have several ways to go here, but I need to get a better idea of the material and cuts.
Are you cutting straight lines or are there curves involved (tight or not bad). Also, does the leather have some body or is it more supple, and how thick is the leather/laminate/foam?
Tell me about cutting mat healing how can i protect it of damage please!
Hi Eman,
The rubber material the poundo board is made of will kind of "heal" itself, so when small cuts are made it is barely noticeable. The poundo board is also great for setting your rivets and placing it underneath your marble slab for tooling. For heavy duty cutting and punching, we would recommend the novolene chopping block.
@@WeaverLeatherSupply thankes
What is the material of the cutting coard for punching?
It's a poly cutting board - same material as most kitchen cutting boards.
What is the purpose of the marble? It doesn't seem like you would need to hammer hard enough for it to be an issue. Also what is the purpose of the anvil, I don't know if I need to get one or if I am good without it?
Hi Joshua,
To set rivets, snaps, etc. and do any type of stamping or tooling you will need a solid, dense surface that won't bounce or wobble and a marble or granite slab will give you the perfect surface. Other surfaces can jar and cause your stamps to not impress very well.
As far as the anvil, it depends on what kind of rivets you are using. If you are using rivets with rounded caps the anvil will ensure the rivet cap doesn't get dinged or bent when setting it but a rivet can be set without it.
Thank you, just trying to budget and seeing what I absolutely need and what I can hold off on. I appreciate the response. Do you have any advice on pros or cons of acrylic paints(Is it less flexible and prone to cracking, is that why it doesn't seem to come up?) I'm only finding information on oil based?
My Poundo board is almost ruined. It has deep cuts in it and I have only had it for a couple of months. I do not have a very large desktop so my cut area centers in the middle. Is there any way to repair one of these?
Hi Bruce,
The poundo boards are somewhat self healing, so, when you make a cut the mark closes itself back up. That being said, once you've made cut after cut, it will eventually need replaced. If you are doing hole punching and strap punching, I would recommend using a cutting board for that and keeping the poundo board for knife cuts only and as a base for your quartz when tooling and stamping. Hope that helps!
I use an arbor press to punch holes in leather and my poly-mat has developed deep holes on the surface that make the leather slide off center when pressed, so I need a surface that is harder that wont become indented as I punch the leather, any suggestions? Thanks!
I feel like a poly mat is a consumable in that scenario. Needing to swapped every once it a while
@@griffinmakes yeah swap the bitches lol
My issue with the white cutting boards is the little texture ends up on the leather. How do you prevent that from happening? Same with sometimes flattening sometimes if not adding the texture from the board
I like to keep some scrap leather on my bench or "economy" grade leather to place between the project I'm punching and the cutting board. It prevents any ugly marks from applying to the opposite side of my project. I'll do the same with flattening my stitch line. I keep a clean strip of natural veg tan to place between the board and my finished threads while I'm flattening them.

Where can I get a good sized marble board for a reasonable price?
Hi there,
The largest we have available are 12" x 12": www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/65800-24-12/marble-tooling-slab/pr_62664
If you're looking for bigger than that, try a place that does countertops or memorials and they may have scrap or mistake pieces that they can either give you at a good price or possibly free.
How can I find the equipment. Do you sell anything.
Yes, we sell most of the items you see in the videos. Usually, the link is in the description of the video! We will link the poundo board here: www.weaverleathersupply.com/products/silent-poundo-board
As I'm not from the U.S. what is a poundo board made of,Rubber?
Hi John!
Yes, it's a 1/4" thick rubber material.
@@WeaverLeatherSupply Cheers,thank you :-)
What about quartz board from tandy
It's honestly overpriced and I've seen some folks say it is actually cement with veneer (decorative material) on top! If you want something cheaper I'd go to a hardware store that sells stone supplies and pick up a thick slab there.
Can't you use a bench block instead of a marble stone slab?
If you have one it may be fine. Everyone always suggests to try getting marble/granite/quartz from a countertop/tombstone shop. If they have off cuts or scrap, they may give them to you for a couple bucks or free.
What would be the perfect surface set up for punching sewing holes in leather with pricking irons?
Hello,
Simply a poly cutting board on a marble slab or a solid table works great!
sorry you are wrong i bought a block of marble and it broke within a week i find it to be an inferior stone to use
Jack: No, he's not "wrong". Thousands of professional leather crafters use marble. Yours could have had a weakness, been too thin, not had a good enough base under it, etc.
