I got my strap cutter today and I’ll say this with all honesty, very fair price and it’s made well. I like to see and use tools that someone made and took the extra time to make the fit nice. I coulda bought one a few dollars cheaper and fast shipping but just looking at the pictures I felt they wouldn’t have been even half as nice as Weavers. I just ordered one yesterday, so I’m sure I’ll refer back to this video again. The first thing I’ll make with it, my 20-year-old replacement belt that held up quite nicely, but it is time! I kept buying belts that I thought would work, but they just weren’t built the same, so they weren’t comfortable sitting nor standing. After accidentally finding a leather crafting video, having a background in design, plus having learned a lot from my Mother the seamstress… I was like, “I can make that stuff too and replace my own belt!” 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I might add that Weaver has the best price on strap cutters, only $19.25 as of June 14, 2018. Everybody else charges $30+ for their versions. I use a Weaver strap cutter and it works just as Chuck has shown here.
I think the one thing you might be missing in this video is what to do if you you don't have a straight edge to being with to put the cutter against. I suppose the best way is to make the first cut by hand using the straight edge/square, which could be troublesome for big cuts of leather on small tables
If you don't have a straight edge then, yes, you will have to make the first cut by hand and make it as straight as you can. We do offer straight edging when you purchase a hide from us should you need it 👍
I know this is an old video but i have a question, If you are using this for a light leather do you have any tips to make the process easier I have a suede thats 4-5 ounces that ive been struggling to use this for
Unfortunately the wooden strap cutter doesn't work well for softer leather like suede. Suede is best cut into straps using a long straight edge or if you're cutting lace, you can use a lace cutter: www.weaverleathersupply.com/products/leather-lace-cutter
How easy is it to strop/re-sharpen the blade on this strap cutter? I see Weaver sells replacements, but would like to figure out how long I can use one without doing so. Cheers!
any tips for setting the width? mine seems to keep wanting to pinch the leather and won't cut smoothly, and I've tried setting the blade different ways, nothing's worked so far
