In this episode, the aspiring musicians -- saxophonist Patrick Bartley, pianist Tony Madruga, and bass player Russell Hall -- meet at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York to practice under the tutelage of jazz master Wynton Marsalis. The students pay close attention as he provides invaluable critique on musicianship and offers insights into the realm of improvisation.
"Jazz is the only music in the world where four people sit up on a bandstand and they have to give shape and logic and form to music as they're making it," Marsalis explains. "What musicians do and artists do is they give form to chaos."
It is fun to see Patrick Bartley and Russel Hall in their “developing stage”. They are both amazing musicians making their mark on the music!
no wonder patrick bartley is so good
Patrick Bartley of the J-Music Ensemble. Cool to see him here.
Patrick Bartley is an amazing musician
I hear people criticize Wyntons' playin. Just listen to that passage of Night in Tunisia right at the begining! Sheeitt!!!
Should show wynton the after you're gone video lol
I'm am very glad to see one of my family members with wynton I hope and wish him the best on his tremendous journey
You must be VERY proud by now! Both Pat and Russell are brilliant so if I were you, I’d claim both as family ;)
Ft Lauderdale stand up! Dillard High Stand up! Patrick Bartley, I knew you were special man. To see you now in 2023 is incredible man!
Anyone have the link for that intro clip?
Was the drummer's name intentionally left out of the description? He's a musician too.
0:37 oh this is so damn ironic coming from him
:poyo:
:poyo:
Patrick is a better improviser than Winton ( and he talks less!)
giver him time, & the right subject. & man, Russell Hall has stopped looking down!!!
You missed that trumpet is difficult 3 times more than sax XD
@@metaphor5533 I wonder if that is true, but, regardless, the one trumpeter that could certainly technically have played this is Wynton. but I was referring to the unremitting flow of improvisational ideas which ( in my hearing at least) he is unable to match.
@@jwmc41 Patrick is a true natural improviser with flowing musical ideas. His solo of ‘After you’ve gone’ is masterful.😍
I wouldn’t necessarily say better, just different
Wynton made the choice to go back to the pre bebop swing
He could play differently if he wanted to, he just doesn’t want to
One Good Session And They Forget Who Wynton is 🥱 Typical New Gen
