      Thanks, even though this was a few years ago now! It is illegal to return carp to the water in SA and the more carp out of this fishery the better. I don't show images of dead fish unless I'm eating them!

    • @captainfrank01
      @captainfrank01  4 роки тому +2

      No, I don't! It's a Fox camlock extendable bank stick with buzz bar and 2x Fox Micron RX+ bite alarms, each operated with 2AA batteries. I got them online at Harris Sportsmail and had them shipped out here from the UK. I haven't seen them in tackle shops in Australia at all. They are excellent for freshwater fishing, especially when you use them in conjunction with baitrunner reels, giving a strong audible alarm when you get a run, and far better than those damned bells! The whole lot cost me about AUD$200, but they have repaid me many times over.

      PS Just saw yesterday a report that an angler in NSW has just set a new Australian carp record with a 48lb (21.8kg) fish at an 'undisclosed location'. Apparently, he caught 2 fish over 40lbs in the same session!

    If you want Callop and anything other than carp, I'd ditch the worms and corn.

    • @captainfrank01
      @captainfrank01  4 роки тому +2

      Well I was targeting carp - the more out of there the better - hence the bait choice. If I was after callop only, I would have gone to lures. I take your point.

      Hi - scrub and tiger worms and sweetcorn generally, however I think you will struggle at this time of year with the cold weather and the reservoir being so high. All reports suggest that the fishing has pretty well closed down until the warmer weather returns. You may get lucky if you use lures, but don't expect too much at the moment.

    Nice work. Be nice if they could open up a bit more of it for angling, I use to fish it a lot when I was young and mischievous and the better spots are off limits. Not sure whether they allow kayaks in there?

    • @captainfrank01
      @captainfrank01  5 років тому +3

      Thanks James - most of the reservoir is now open to permit angling, except for the section either side of the dam wall. Trust me, there are plenty of options for those prepared to walk. Kayaks are allowed, there are 2 launching points and several kayak fishing competitions have been held so far. Apparently there have been recent fish stockings in the South Para Reservoir as well, so it sounds like that might be coming online soon, which is great as it is (IMO) a much better water. Can't believe anyone would have fished any reservoir illegally in the past ............. :)

    is it too dirty to lure fish in there?

    • @captainfrank01
      @captainfrank01  4 роки тому

      Clarity varies a lot, depending on whether there is pumping happening or not. Lure fishing has been very productive this past spring through to autumn and the water was pretty dirty for much of that time.

    • @captainfrank01
      @captainfrank01  6 років тому +2

      Thank you - not up to the standard of the fish you catch though! 'European' carp are a pest (noxious) fish in Australia and have to be destroyed by law, hence the use of the gaff. For some reason they do not seem to grow to the same sizes here (Australian record is 19.7kg), but fish of 4-7kg are fairly common. Use of bite indicators and sophisticated tackle, baits and techniques is rare - a bunch of worms on a basic paternoster style rig will do the job here!

    • @NICarper
      @NICarper 6 років тому +1

      captainfrank01 I love watching carp fishing from all over the globe! Yes sad they are seen as a pest as when they get to 20lb+ they give an immense fight! You have a great setup with the bite alarms and the soft tip rods too

      Hey mate carp do grow big in Australia, they've have been caught in S.A. over 30lb and over 40lb in NSW, the reason carp don't grow big where you normally fish is they keep getting smacked over the head every time they're caught 😫 ...or worse still douchbags throwing them up the bank 😖

    • @captainfrank01
      @captainfrank01  5 років тому

      @@petercarter6086 Hi Peter - I have to say I'm surprised that they haven't reached 100lb+ in what is perfect habitat like the River Murray in the 45 years or so that they have been here. I have seen a couple of larger 20lb+ fish caught in nets back in the day before netting in the River was banned, but have not heard of or seen any 30lb fish line caught in SA. The existing Australian record fish was caught in NSW (Centennial Park, Sydney), and 19.7kg converts to 43 lbs, so that sounds feasible. As a matter of record, any carp I catch are fed to the pelicans or buried before leaving.

    I’ve killed a few as well. I just think it funny we have to kill them when that won’t make any difference to there numbers. Plus they lay stinkin on the bank 😂

    • @captainfrank01
      @captainfrank01  Рік тому +1

      Yes, I tend to agree, but Warren is (until it was emptied) an emerging and valuable local native fishery thanks to stocking by RecFishSA. Ironic that with Murray River water pumping the carp will come back once it refills anyway. As a matter of interest, I don't leave them on the bank, I either remove them or bury them with a small shovel that I take with me.

    Why would you pay $33 for a permit to catch 'mud marlin', would be nice if they invested the fee on timber fishing platforms around the area and make the place more attractive and safer for folks to take the family and let them enjoy the sport in some sort of comfort, until they make the place more user friendly I won't be fishing there.

    • @captainfrank01
      @captainfrank01  4 роки тому +3

      Everyone to their own mate, I actually quite like catching carp! There are plenty of good natives in here as well - if I used lures, I might catch some that my $33 has gone towards stocking into the Warren! Timber fishing platforms wouldn't work here because the water level fluctuates so much during the year, and besides, not everyone sees those as 'attractive and safer' for fishing. What's wrong with taking some deck chairs and fishing with the family from a 'safe' bank? I think you expect a little too much and maybe should be thankful that RecFishSA had the drive to undertake stocking and negotiating reservoir access in the first place. Guess I won't be bumping into you then.

    It's a rotten shame that our inland waterways are bursting at the seams with carp, redfin, tench, goldfish ... Just wait until some Asian immigrant introduces the snakehead.
    Eternal damnation to those people that originally introduced and released them. Cats and rabbits too.
    When I was a kid in the 80's I lived at Strathalbyn, and there were some cunning monster carp in the Angas River - well over a metre long. Huge ones in lake Alexandrina too. They need to introduce the carp herpes virus to wipe 90 percent or more of them out. Then use genetic engineering with Gene Drives to make any survivors only produce offspring of one sex, leading to population collapse and local extinction.
