    Funny, as I was watching this I was thinking how this would be with Stones stuff cause Keef plays a yellow one of these, and then I thought of The Black Crowes. Then I saw your shirt as you started playing Crowes, and The Stones. I NEED IT!

    As much as I love Teles, I really wish players in the whole newish club country band scene would pick up on this type of guitar. That back pickup does excellent clean twang and spank. Emmylou's guitarist from the 1980s, Frank Reckard, was the only guy I knew of who used a Special or Junior for country and the results were most excellent.

    I had a 1960 model and the neck cracked at the joint. Gibson moved the neck pickup about an inch towards the bridge in later models to fix that tendency.
    I just picked up a 2006 version of this guitar and it's very nice. It sounds pretty much the same... they cut costs a bit with the faded finish and un-bound neck, but I am digging the guitar.

  • @henrynolan6722

    The neck to body pocket on these early double-cuts was a weak/problem area for Gibson and repairs around that area are common. Hence, Gibson moved the front P90 back towards the bridge on subsequent models to allow more 'wood' contact at the neck to body joint. A fabulous guitar nonetheless. They were still producing these after the intro of the SG with the Les Paul designation taken off the headstock. No doubt to run out guitars already built after the agreement with Les Paul was terminated!

    This is just before they moved the neck pup nearer to the bridge....because originally the pup was next to the neck which weakened the neck/body joint. Guess that’s why this one ended up being repaired....

    The LP Special had problems with the neck/body joint due to the front pu eating up some of the neck tenon. This guitar was make back in the pre guitar stand era. Back then it was common to see guitars with broken headstocks due to falling over and breaking after being leaned up against an amp. It was also common for guitar players of this era to attach their straps to the headstock of guitars (like McCartney does with his Martin). This practice would cause the neck to body joint to fail.

    I really like the double cutaway. I wonder if that makes the next week or at the neck joint though weaker. I don't know if it's expensive new ones or if they have these but I really like that heel cutaway I don't know why they didn't do that all this time. and weight relief without all that extra money. and I wonder if since they're blocked if they still come so that you have to level the Frets and all that stuff of course you would have to set it up but you should not have to adjust the frets. I live in a very small town you'd be lucky to ever find a Gibson and that music store. I really like my Melody Maker Les Paul Jr 2003 because it has the intonation. and I like not having a PC board in my guitar. we shall see if they endure the test of time the only good thing about it is you can plug in pickups like anybody can solder it right

    Awesome guitar as always Mark!!! I loved the bit with the black-light and how shining it on a vintage guitar shows the wear and tear and if it's has had any repair jobs done to it. It was cool and interesting to know/learn. By the way, what are the songs that you're playing in this video.

    The early LP specials had a notoriously weak neck joint because the neck pickup was too close to where the neck joined the body. Guarantee that neck joint started to fail and it was removed and re-glued.

    • @auntjenifer7774

      Why would it be sprayed where it s at ?
      That is where the neck breaks on SG and double cut Les Paul special break right there if they don't break on the Headstock first .

      Ramkix Vincent studios are modern era, specials have been made since the 50's. You'll normally find neck binding on a special but not on a studio and neither will have body binding.

    • @montys8th
      @montys8th 7 років тому +2

      soulassasin10 anyone who deals in vintage guitars will have a black light, if they don't then they are amateurs. Best way to see a repaired headstock crack is under a black light and when something like that effectively halves its value to the collector market then a dealer would be insane to buy anything without black lighting it first.
