    I don't understand one thing about the documentary simulations: is widely known that the ancient greeks did practice and compete always fully naked in the gymnasium and in the Olympics, except for the running with shield, but the actors/models were wearing this kind of diaper all along, but in the bath recreation they are showed naked. They were supposed to be naked all the time as the ancient greek athletes did.

    *The presumptive attitudes of these historians is sickening...* next time just focus on the story telling and don't throw in your opinions if you've never saddled your ass on a horse or gone to the gym on a regular basis, or competed in any sporting events.
    *It seems that in our modern age of sedentarianism* it is difficult to believe that our ancient ancestors could attempt such physical feats of speed, strength, and endurance. While it's appreciated that they made efforts to unearth and share this ancient history, please do not devalue the achievements of our ancient men and women just because a SELECT FEW people cannot imagine how it was done.
    *I feel and believe* that these historians and those of whom are like in opinion, neglect the clear evidence of how such great feats were achieved by the ancient Greeks. For one they had a reverence for the gods and dedicated their games to them. Next their philosophy was rooted in order and control in a midst of chaos and agony. Next the men were highly trained in the military: therefore the training in the games and competition in it only built further upon their strong foundation.
    *In short* their minds were first turned upward to the gods which in turn moved them to align their thoughts and actions with what would be honorable to the gods whom they served. An example lacking in today's sports where many men and women simply compete for their own vain glory.

      why did you try and sum up the entire documentry

    • @davidcolley9733
      @davidcolley9733 3 роки тому +1

      Jeremy
      You base your comments about the informed comments of others on your presumptions and beliefs, and then complain about using presumptions.
      History is about interpreting the evidence and that's what this documentary attempted to do, and it changes in the light of new evidence too.
      If being religious and in the military were significant factors in performing outstanding feats, then outstanding athletic feats would be performed by only soldiers and the religious today. But they aren't.
      Also if you think that the ancient athletes didn't compete to win and bask in the glory of the win, you're kidding yourself.
      I realise the documentary may have burst a bubble or two of yours, but that's what happens when new evidence comes to light.

      God has nothing to do with anything, that's why there are and have been many varieties of god over the years and god-fearing countries have messed up as massively as those who claim to have no god.

      @@davidcolley9733 his point is clear, people dismiss ancient people easily because they think modernity is always better but many athletes in Greece were payed to train all day. They actively supported and encouraged people to do sports and gifted people were searched for. There are stones who weight 180kg engraved with the name of the athlete who pushed it over his head. These guys must have been absolute massive

    The intro shows a woman in the crowd and women are scattered throughout. Women were forbidden at the Olympic Games. The games were all male events.
    Lovely film, other than that.
    Looked into the women attending Olympic Games in ancient times and seems I was not entirely accurate. Quite a few opinions indicate that young unmarried girls (some say virgin girls) could attend. Never too old to learn ...

If it's because you don't want to offend anyone, then those who are offended should not look. But the truth is the truth. Come on, if you want realism then get their damn loin clothes OFF and let the world make of it what they want!
