Good or bad, the UA-cam Rewinds were a time where everyone came together as a community to watch their favorite UA-camrs in one massive collab, and it was just the best feeling when you would ask someone "Hey, did you watch the latest UA-cam rewind?" and obviously they would respond with yes, and then you'd talk about all the things you saw and which UA-camrs you knew from it and which parts you liked or didn't like. I miss them too.

But I've never seen a complete Rewind, maybe I did watch a few minutes of the one with colbert, but I genuinely don't care about them or most people in them(I assume), so why bother, but happy that people enjoyed them. And then even I got exposed to the debates and reactions of UA-cam Rewinds especially the last one. Really can't under-estimate the impact of those, essentially corporate propaganda PSAs, and the peoples reaction to it, for many I was probably one of the few ways they could actually express thier dissatisfaction with the path UA-cam is/has taken. But as we see actual Feedback(Good AND Bad) is not something UA-cam wants 👎
I feel like we should get rewinds, but they should be community made. Like, every year each subdivision of the platform, like gaming, animation, food, challenges, etc, they should get together to make a rewind for the previous year. That way we can sort of get quality control, while still having the rewinds representing the community.

No one is stopping anyone from making their own rewinds if they want to. There are two reasons why rewinds stopped and probably wouldnt work as well if they got brought back. 1) all of you man critically panned the Rewinds in the first place which is why they stopped happening. Now youtube got rid of them, youre mad that they stopped. 2) internet culture has stopped being as ubiquitous as it was in 2017. In that era, there were memes and landmark events that had everyone's attention online. Nowadays, the only things that keep everyone's attention are actual world events or news about which creator has been exposed as a r*pist/p*dophile/s*xual harrasser etc. There is nothing that is both benign enough and noteworthy enough to even put in a Rewind.

In the spanish community, we have never been really acknowledge by UA-cam, since it almost only cared about English creators, but ever since the 2018 rewind came out, an incredible spanish UA-camr called Alec Molon made his own rewind full of UA-cam Spanish community things with very little budget, but ever since spanish community noticed this, he made one evey year with a lot of donations as budget and due to he's a normal UA-camr and not a UA-cam official worker, he has a lot of freedom to work as he put memes and references everywhere and the effects amd visuals are just incredible. Even if you don't understand Spanish i recommend you to watch some of his rewinds, he included a lot of world popular things like Among us in 2020 or the attack to the area 51, it'll be worth it.

I think I mainly just miss the comprehensive yearly trend/meme/music recap. As you get older you sort of forget what was going on at the start of a year, lose track of trends, and sometimes even what happened in what year. UA-cam rewind did a lot for that.
I think for 2018 Rewind maybe UA-cam just wanted to show itself as a family-friendly platform so they skipped over the drama and the controversy but that makes UA-cam well... UA-cam so Rewind 2018 was less of a fun video and more like a PG-rated trailer for UA-cam as a service
UA-cam Rewind Indonesia is the closest thing we have to the official UA-cam rewinds from 2012-2016. I’d say their rewind for 2020 gave me actual nostalgia even tho I hated 2020 while it happened

Yeah in hindsight he was talking about when UA-cam screwed up Rewind 2018. I still remember that dreadful day and it just made creators question themselves a lot. Which may explain why Modern UA-cam hasn't really captured the same charm as it once did. Nowadays it just feels like creators are trying way too hard to be funny or trying to cause drama just to get more attention.
I remember them cancelling the 2020 Rewind because of COVID, but I think I remember wondering why they couldn't make one themed around being in a ZOOM Call. It would've been pretty creative.
I wouldn't be surprised if they had wanted to stop doing Rewinds anyway, after the poor reception of the last two, and they just used Covid as the excuse to pull the plug on them for good.

I think the UA-cam Rewinds of 2012 through 2015 perfectly captured how UA-cam was its own thing, it's own talent pool separate from traditional media, and its own community like you said it felt like. Defo really miss that aspect to it.
As cringe as the last few rewinds were, I really hope they bring it back. It was always pretty cool seeing all my favorite creators uniting as a community and celebrating the biggest trends of the year.

There's still small communities nestled on the corners of the internet. Of course we don't feel like communities on the massive social media giants, but there's still dozens of people actively participating in thousands of little communities.
The best thing about this kind of event is that it could bring together many members of the platform. Since Rewind was cancelled, there hasn't been a lot of unity with UA-cam and its content creators (videos get taken down, not getting enough income, ridiculous amount of ads, dislikes getting removed etc.). We need a point where all UA-camrs can get together and reminisce about the great things we've acheived instead of complaining or arguing.
There's this IHE quote that I always come back to whenever I think of rewind: "Why do we call it 'UA-cam'? It's not about you. That's asking far too much. Let's call it what it truly is now: 'MultiMillionDollarCorporateBusinessTube'"
In the hispanic community we have been making our own rewinds since 2018, they are made by the community of yutubers itself, and despite the 2023 rewind being a little bit underwhelming, they usualy have a bigger quality and are more in touch with the public.

UA-cam Rewind 2018 was unironically the pinnacle of UA-cam, because as was said in the video it completely unites all of us, but also, what other platform would allow for their flagship production for the year to be the single most ridiculed thing on the platform. It also showed that when UA-cam tried to make something more along the lines of a traditional production, with more CGI and celebs, that it didn’t actually fit in with platform itself. I would love nothing more than to have rewind back, maybe each year a council of UA-camrs get included in the process, to allow it to still be real. And honestly if it was longer I’d be down too. 20/30 mins would be fine by me.
The whole thing of being excited to watch youtube rewind as a community in december is so real tho. It was something I looked forward to so much every year and I have such good memories of it. In the spanish community, we have never been really acknowledge by UA-cam, since it almost only cared about English creators, but ever since the 2018 rewind came out, an incredible spanish UA-camr called Alec Molon made his own rewind full of UA-cam Spanish community things with very little budget, but ever since spanish community noticed this, he made one evey year with a lot of donations as budget and due to he's a normal UA-camr and not a UA-cam official worker, he has a lot of freedom to work as he put memes and references everywhere and the effects amd visuals are just incredible. Even if you don't understand Spanish i recommend you to watch some of his rewinds, he included a lot of world popular things like Among us in 2020 or the attack to the area 51, it'll be worth it.

I think I mainly just miss the comprehensive yearly trend/meme/music recap. As you get older you sort of forget what was going on at the start of a year, lose track of trends, and sometimes even what happened in what year. UA-cam rewind did a lot for that.

I think for 2018 Rewind maybe UA-cam just wanted to show itself as a family-friendly platform so they skipped over the drama and the controversy but that makes UA-cam well... UA-cam so Rewind 2018 was less of a fun video and more like a PG-rated trailer for UA-cam as a service
UA-cam Rewind Indonesia is the closest thing we have to the official UA-cam rewinds from 2012-2016. I’d say their rewind for 2020 gave me actual nostalgia even tho I hated 2020 while it happened

I feel like James' point of everyone watching Rewinds together echoes a Film Theory from a few months ago ("How UA-cam BROKE Your Brain") Where MatPat talks about how the landscape of social media has divided and diluted pop culture. Its a very interesting meta analysis that I think goes on the list of Must Watch theory videos
Yeah in hindsight he was talking about when UA-cam screwed up Rewind 2018. I still remember that dreadful day and it just made creators question themselves a lot. Which may explain why Modern UA-cam hasn't really captured the same charm as it once did. Nowadays it just feels like creators are trying way too hard to be funny or trying to cause drama just to get more attention.
I remember them cancelling the 2020 Rewind because of COVID, but I think I remember wondering why they couldn't make one themed around being in a ZOOM Call. It would've been pretty creative.

I think the UA-cam Rewinds of 2012 through 2015 perfectly captured how UA-cam was its own thing, it's own talent pool separate from traditional media, and its own community like you said it felt like. Defo really miss that aspect to it.
As cringe as the last few rewinds were, I really hope they bring it back. It was always pretty cool seeing all my favorite creators uniting as a community and celebrating the biggest trends of the year.
Well, at least we could get a few laughs out of it. Although it was pretty weird and cringey.😬

The best thing about this kind of event is that it could bring together many members of the platform. Since Rewind was cancelled, there hasn't been a lot of unity with UA-cam and its content creators (videos get taken down, not getting enough income, ridiculous amount of ads, dislikes getting removed etc.). We need a point where all UA-camrs can get together and reminisce about the great things we've acheived instead of complaining or arguing.

In the hispanic community we have been making our own rewinds since 2018, they are made by the community of yutubers itself, and despite the 2023 rewind being a little bit underwhelming, they usualy have a bigger quality and are more in touch with the public.

UA-cam Rewind 2018 was unironically the pinnacle of UA-cam, because as was said in the video it completely unites all of us, but also, what other platform would allow for their flagship production for the year to be the single most ridiculed thing on the platform.
It also showed that when UA-cam tried to make something more along the lines of a traditional production, with more CGI and celebs, that it didn’t actually fit in with platform itself.
I would love nothing more than to have rewind back, maybe each year a council of UA-camrs get included in the process, to allow it to still be real. And honestly if it was longer I’d be down too. 20/30 mins would be fine by me.
The whole thing of being excited to watch youtube rewind as a community in december is so real tho. It was something I looked forward to so much every year and I have such good memories of it. I loved recognizing all my favorite youtubers like a game of wheres waldo. I miss it a lot but its undortunate that youtube took advantage of youtubers like that
