Oh no, Canute is not being mad. He's totally being rational and understands the suffering and pain he is causing. He has a "ends justifies the means" mentality. He has the same goal as before but the more he gets into the position of the King, the more he thinks he needs to use violence to get to the peaceful world. He has to have all the power possible if he truly wants to create a peaceful civillization. The issue is that his methods creates so much harm and actually positions him close to what his father was. But you can see Thorfinn totally sees Canute point even if he disagrees with what he's doing.
No enemies gang rise up! I believe Canutes goal was to conquer all the vikings and reform them into an organised force that does not kill for the sake of killing and does not causes unnecessary pain
This was the best episode of the season for me. Thorfinn finally saying "I have no enemies" was such a good scene Also, in case you didn't decide yet which anime to watch after Vinland, or even MHA, I'll just give 3 recommendations: 1) Summertime rendering (one season, story complete). It's a short anime with good mistery. You can make theories and appreciate it I think. 2) Link Click (2 seasons, third coming soon). This one is a little different, because it's not Japanese but a Chinese anime. Extremely underrated in my opinion. The concept is really cool. 3) Jujutsu Kaisen (2 seasons + 1 movie). This one is more popular and considered one of the best new gen anime like Chainsaw man or demon slayer. It has really good animation and would probably get more views.
Great episode and reaction, but I think you misunderstand Canute and his goals, allow me to mansplain. 🤪 Canute sees the Vikings for what they are; savage, greedy, proud and stubborn. He understands that the Vikings will never see Paradise in their current state. That is why he has undertaken for himself the conquest of all the North Sea and ultimately the entire Viking world, so that he may reform them under his vision of peace (we already know Canute forbids looting and raping after conquest as well as duels in his town). Canute can't achieve his vision if there are holdouts. Finally, because the Vikings will not see Paradise in the afterlife, Canute has made it his life goal to achieve Paradise on Earth under his reign. It is the perfect opposite to Thorfinn, who wishes to leave the Viking world for a better place. Canute wants to reform it all and do away with viking culture and war. He seeks an imperial peace. He's an exceptional character and I love him.

”Save the Vikings" means a lot. Canute is plannning a huge reformation of society and culture. Which is only the greatest kings could do.
