Daniel shows you how to make Korean Grilled Mackerel. This is a very common homecooking dish in Korea. Pacific Mackerel is light, white fish that's rich in omega 3. Best of all, its cheap too! Great to include as part of a balanced diet. I grew up eating it at least once a week!
I also show you how to make Braised Mackerel with Radish. This is a savory dish, where we braise mackerel and radish in a flavored soy sauce broth. The result is what we call a "rice killer". See video for more!

If you're not going to eat rice... 😱😱😱There's a few other ways to reduce that fishy odour.
#1) Soak in milk for 10-15 minutes (Substance called Casein found in milk that binds with the fish odor)
#2) Pour 1:1 equal amount of vinegar + cold water (Not as effective as milk, reduced smell about 50%)
For both ways, remember to rinse-off afterwards!
Always say no to Stinky Fish!

I just soaked/cooked and ate Mackerel by your recipe, it’s 09:00 here in USA, Tennessee, actually ate this for breakfast with Pa Kimchi, pickled Korean radish, rice and radish Kimchi. I made two nice heads of Kimchi yesterday, put it in the refrigerator about an hour ago to slow the fermentation a bit. Thank you for sharing your recipe, the fish was great.

If the fish has a head, another good tip to know if the fish is fresh is to look at the eyes. Fresh fish have nice glossy eyes. If the fish is not so fresh, the eyes look dull and dried.

I love mackerel!! 😍😍 but not even joking.. fishbones have me traumatized haha! As a child I ate fish all the time, deep fried. But when I was like 7 I ate a bone and it actually pierced my tongue. I didn't know at the time it happened but I thought it was stuck in my throat and had it for two days!! So when I finally looked in the mirror I saw it was through my tongue 😑😑 had to push it out and still has me chewing my fish for 10 mins haha 😂😂 but mackerel is so tasty!!

Cool learned a new method to cook this fish! I normally use one of those gas stove top korean grills to grill my mackerel but the only thing I use is kosher salt on both sides. I grill the fish about 6-8 per side then serve with some grated daikon & soy sauce. I'll have to try your method next time.
Downside of my method? Fishy smell everywhere but I found rubbing a piece of daikon over the grill seems to get rid of it or even an onion works.

In Malaysia, we have this dish called Asam Pedas, which uses mackarel too, and have broth almost similar to this, but adds a bit more ingredients (n we dont use gochujang though). And one tip when handling fish that cooked in broth is dont stir the fish/broth too much or it will fall apart.. my mom would go crazy if i started to stir even just a lil 😂😂 but yeah, nice recipe, would love to try this.. one question though, what can i replace cooking wine with inside the recipe?

I catch my own fish because I live in Georgia. Since there's a Kia (Korean car manufacturer) plant here, Korean culture has taken over because they have come from Korea to work. So, I've been getting super addicted to Korean food! Don't tell the Japanese restaurant I work at lol!! Anyway, let me get to the point haha, I was wondering if I could apply this to any fish or if the flavors were specific to the Mackerel. I want to make meals with the fish I catch and I've aquired a taste for Korean fish dishes!! Thank you if you read this! I'm sorry for the backstory lol!!

Also have to have kim chi!! My favorite brand is one that's locally made, when you open the jar, it pops out a bit and it's fizzy! Carbonated kim chi for the win!

I love those recipes. I really like mackerel but that smell is killing me. Definitely I will try the rice water trick. Thank you for sharing. Greetings from Bulgaria! 고맙습니다! 😊❤

Yea, I'm the same!! We call that fishy smell in Korean... bi-rin-neh (비린내). Most Koreans are very sensitive to it, so there's a lot of household tricks to get rid of it.

If mackeral is too fishy for you, either your fish is not fresh or you need to expand your palate.

Daniel, does Korea sell wild caught mackeral or is the conventional kind more common? Thks if u can reply.

      @FutureNeighbor  5 років тому +2

Yes, they do! Much more expensive, I believe from Jeju-do. You'll find them e-mart or B1 floor of department stores. The most expensive kind is imported from Norway. The meat on them is huge.

That mackerel with curry powder looks delicious. I'll try putting flour and curry powder the next time I fry some fish.

Yes if you keep a 1:1 ratio... it's a nice balance. The curry powder doesnt get overwhelming!
