If you're not going to eat rice... 😱😱😱There's a few other ways to reduce that fishy odour. #1) Soak in milk for 10-15 minutes (Substance called Casein found in milk that binds with the fish odor) #2) Pour 1:1 equal amount of vinegar + cold water (Not as effective as milk, reduced smell about 50%) For both ways, remember to rinse-off afterwards! Always say no to Stinky Fish!
This seems so easy and delicious! As I'm from NYC and recently moved to Korea, I'm afraid to buy a whole fish lol cause you never see it whole in the states.....GREAT VIDEO- Will GIVE IT A TRY!!! (:
Thank you very kindly. I learned a lot just 1/3 way through your video. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your channel. You are a good teacher and very knowledgeable and likable. Glad I found your channel.
When you say you're full, she'll offer an extra two dishes. Then some peeled fruit. Oh and then some snacks from Costco. If you refuse any of them, you'll fail the test of being an honorable Asian guest. 🤣
The dishes look so yummy. I want some fish and rice now. And as much as I loved this video, I love more how down to earth you are. The surprise over the spring onion part made me laugh too hard
One thing that puzzles me is people complaining about the fishy taste from fish. Come on, its freaken fish..if u want it to taste like chicken then eat chicken.
I tried the first recipe, and it was delicious with just a bit of salt and flour. Came out crispy and perfect. My first time doing bone-in fish and I was so happy about how it turned out.
pro-tip! i made a lot of braised fish during my time in korea (saury, mackerel, etc) and if you add some good ripe kimchi and onions on top of the radish under the fish, you'll get some bomb 김치생선조림 ^^
I just soaked/cooked and ate Mackerel by your recipe, it’s 09:00 here in USA, Tennessee, actually ate this for breakfast with Pa Kimchi, pickled Korean radish, rice and radish Kimchi. I made two nice heads of Kimchi yesterday, put it in the refrigerator about an hour ago to slow the fermentation a bit. Thank you for sharing your recipe, the fish was great.
Thank you for sharing this because I'll be having these mackerel recipes in our household. It looks Healthy and easy quick simple meal, that's what I like. New subscriber.
Phht! My chopstick skills are most definitely on point. A year or so back while eating at a Taiwanese hot pot restaurant an elderly Asian lady at the next table was amazed by my finesse with chopsticks. That's when I knew . . . the student had become the master.
I love mackerel!! 😍😍 but not even joking.. fishbones have me traumatized haha! As a child I ate fish all the time, deep fried. But when I was like 7 I ate a bone and it actually pierced my tongue. I didn't know at the time it happened but I thought it was stuck in my throat and had it for two days!! So when I finally looked in the mirror I saw it was through my tongue 😑😑 had to push it out and still has me chewing my fish for 10 mins haha 😂😂 but mackerel is so tasty!!
Yeaaa I saw! It's a car now!! 😍😍 and no.. it was a treacherous white fish filled, I couldn't believe it either haha! But I still eat fish, just slowly 😂😍
thanks so much for this! 20 years ago i was a server at a korean owned sushi restaurant, and the cooks would make a mackerel stew as the staff meal and I've been thinking about it ever since!
Thankyou. Tried the fried recipe for tea last night. No smell, no splatter, never used seasoned flour before, it was absolutely delicious. Also noticed the fish didn't repeat afterwards.
I've never seen mackerel even sold in my supermarket, only typically salmon and tuna. But this looks really good, hopefully I"ll be able to make it soon!
This looks so yummy. Where I'm from we soak out fish and meats in water flour and salt to get the freshy smell and taste. You could also use any sort of citrus as well. We never cook out meat or fish with our soaking it
My mom actually takes the flour, salt, turmeric, lemon and water and massages it almost like doing laundry to get rid of all the blood and impurities as well as the smell 😂
If the fish has a head, another good tip to know if the fish is fresh is to look at the eyes. Fresh fish have nice glossy eyes. If the fish is not so fresh, the eyes look dull and dried.
Cool learned a new method to cook this fish! I normally use one of those gas stove top korean grills to grill my mackerel but the only thing I use is kosher salt on both sides. I grill the fish about 6-8 per side then serve with some grated daikon & soy sauce. I'll have to try your method next time. Downside of my method? Fishy smell everywhere but I found rubbing a piece of daikon over the grill seems to get rid of it or even an onion works.
Thank you!! I tried the first one, but didn’t have the curry (substituted with salt) and it was still really good. It’s such an oily fish. I didn’t realize that!
If you wanna get something like honey or mayo in a container to the opening instead of the bottom you can put it in a plastic bag with the tip facing away and spin it around!
My favorite dish!!!! This is a dish I eat when I visit my mom. She knows a woman at a local Korean diner and calls ahead that we are coming so they can cook it extra long for us. The radish that soaked up all the spices is like crack to me. Thanks for sharing this video!
I came across your channel by fluke and I’m glad I did. You’re hilarious and I like how you use your arm and finger to measure food. By the way, I enjoy Katie’s random comments, she makes me smile☺️😄 I’m going to try several of your recipes, I’m big on easy and flavourful dishes!
I love mackerel but cannot find it fresh much where I live. Can the braised method be made with canned Korean mackerel? Also, if Korean radish cannot be found will daikon be a good substitute? Thank you!!
I LOVE MACKEREL! Here in the U.K. it's most commonly hot smoked and used cold in salads or my favourite comfort food is the tinned fillets in tomato sauce on hot toast. Yum. I am SO trying these recipes!
I catch my own fish because I live in Georgia. Since there's a Kia (Korean car manufacturer) plant here, Korean culture has taken over because they have come from Korea to work. So, I've been getting super addicted to Korean food! Don't tell the Japanese restaurant I work at lol!! Anyway, let me get to the point haha, I was wondering if I could apply this to any fish or if the flavors were specific to the Mackerel. I want to make meals with the fish I catch and I've aquired a taste for Korean fish dishes!! Thank you if you read this! I'm sorry for the backstory lol!!
Thank you for this video! We also eat a lot of mackerel in my family, but I was never really taught how to cook it, but now I can try. My grandma told me this trick, if I ever accidentally eat a fishbone, swallowing a spoonful of rice will make it less painful lol
Man I went to Korea twice last year and I'm totally in love with the braised fishes.. and the galchi jorim at Namdaemun (?) omg. I'm gonna give this a try
made the spicy braised mackerel and it was fkn bomb 🔥🔥🔥 making this a weekly meal, its the perfect amount of spice, my in law doesn’t like spice and she ate every bite! That says some some ya know
In Malaysia, we have this dish called Asam Pedas, which uses mackarel too, and have broth almost similar to this, but adds a bit more ingredients (n we dont use gochujang though). And one tip when handling fish that cooked in broth is dont stir the fish/broth too much or it will fall apart.. my mom would go crazy if i started to stir even just a lil 😂😂 but yeah, nice recipe, would love to try this.. one question though, what can i replace cooking wine with inside the recipe?
Thank you for making this video. I need to learn how to make it. My mom used to cook for me. The second recipe is what I am looking for. Thank you again. Can't wait to make it my own.
I love white meat fishes! I love salmon but it is dang expensive here in Korea. What is this fish in Korean?i am trying to experiment with other Korean fishes. Currently obsessed with 제주 은갈치? A pain to remove the bones but so worth it! Always love your channel for easy Korean recipes!!!so thank you
Enjoying all your videos. Could you kindly add the name of the fish in Korean in the title? Learning my Korean dishes by their korean name. I know you mention it but nice to see it in writing. Thank you!
I found you too late I was just cooking my Nishiki rice and I just poured out all my rice water. Five minutes later I could’ve sold my mantle and rice water so I had to go for milk but that is awesome. I did not know that’s how you can take that fish taste put
Ohhh I just thought of something!! I want to see you guys make 호박떡 (hobak tteok) I hope my korean is correct-I only just finished learning Hangul😅 But hobak tteok looks so tasty. And so orange!
I finally got to watch this video. From where I am, we eat rice and fish curry on a daily basis ^_^ So this was a good recipe for me and I KNOW it's gonna taste GOOOOOOD!

Love mackerel!!! Miss eating it gonna make some of this soon!
Do you think soaking the fish in a cornstarch+water mixture would work? Since I don't have any rice water atm, I think I'll try that.. 🐠
Thank you very kindly. I learned a lot just 1/3 way through your video. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your channel. You are a good teacher and very knowledgeable and likable. Glad I found your channel.
Vinegar work for me for soaking the fish like 10 minutes
Hahaha...I love the honesty about plating. No one at home does a fancy plating when you're hungry.
Mum would never cook *anything* spicy, so having spicy Sunday lunch with your mum sounds quite lovely. 😄
When you say you're full, she'll offer an extra two dishes. Then some peeled fruit. Oh and then some snacks from Costco. If you refuse any of them, you'll fail the test of being an honorable Asian guest. 🤣

Hehe. That's the best part about homecooking... No need to fake the funk... just work with what you got!
One thing that puzzles me is people complaining about the fishy taste from fish. Come on, its freaken fish..if u want it to taste like chicken then eat chicken.
You are not only the best online teacher-chef but also it's pure entertainment to watch your videos as well. Really appreciate your work.

I lived in korea for a year several years ago my best friends Korean grandma literally taught me all her family's recipes
My Fav Fish, I fry in grapeseed oil after coating in tapioca flower simple and delicious

Thank you Dan-Yul! The Braised mackerel is really simple to do and looks really good
Dude, I'm really salivating right now. The braised mackerel looks really really delicious 🤤
I've never seen mackerel even sold in my supermarket, only typically salmon and tuna. But this looks really good, hopefully I"ll be able to make it soon!
Yes, I don't see it too often at large Western supermarkets. But I think they'll have it at larger Asian SuperMarkets (Depending on where you live!)
Bought it at Costco (but I live in Hawaii, hehe).
asian market!
You have to go to Asian markets.
I see if fairly frequently at my local supermarket, and I live in Kentucky. It's usually sold frozen, not fresh.
My already smoked mackerel brought me here ( it was on sale).
Thank you for these great ideas and making measuring sooo much easier.
Thank you for sharing these yummy recipes. I will definitely try them!😊

I have to try this. I got a bag of frozen mackerel and I love Korean Radish...it looks like a satisfying meal for the weekend.
Love your channel as always! 감사합니다 😊
I went to Sydney fish market today. Bought some mackeral. Made it. Belissimo!

I love the plates you use at the end!
I love Korean food and its culture and beautiful way of life❤

That dish not ugly at all. Looks yummy.
Thank you for sharing the recipe!
U were hilarious with the plating! But inliked that u kept it real!
This is making me so hungry... why am I watching this at 1:30am? 😅

Love how you cooked the fish, came out so beautifully! Thank you for sharing.
I had grilled mackerel from H mart yesterday and it was so good!
The soaking in the starchy water trick really works in getting rid of the fishy smell
You're using a butane stove this video .... I got an Iwatani butane stove and it's a life-changer. I love the thing.
