Don't pass on the Whiskey Smash! - Make this cocktail for spring

  • In today’s video we’re going to make a Whiskey Smash! This is a relatively simple cocktail that requires only one bottle of booze. We’re using bourbon here, but feel free to use any whiskey you enjoy mixing with. The Smash is a style of drink that dates back to the 1800s, and is highly customizable - each component of the drink can be substituted to create a new concoction! Hope you enjoy it for the spring season. Cheers!

I'm so glad you got the history right. Just so you know, when they mean "small plane", it means that it's served in an old fashioned glass. Juleps were originally served in pint glasses, or "large bar glasses".

Agree! Also the word “smash” probably meant “heavy”, this can be either two concepts; (i. They whiskey was less distilled or not filtered that well -or- (ii. It contained more whiskey than any other normal drink). It’s probably the first but I could be wrong. -anyway, love the drink and review ❤

I love a whiskey smash. I was first introduced to them about 12 years ago at a local bar and fell in love. They are a summer staple at my house bar. To lighten it up and make it more refreshing in the summer, a little club soda brightens it up. A little ginger beer too makes a great spin on it.

Bravo, Anders! Was wondering when you’d get around to doing smashes. These are a staple in our cocktail rotation. Especially in the summer. Our favorite version is blackberry-lemon bourbon smash, but we’ve done raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, and even orange. And while we typically use mint, we’ve also used basil. And I agree that Demerara is probably the best for smashes, we’ve also used ginger, cinnamon, and maple simple syrup. The combinations are endless!

It's so interesting the subtle differences in how people prepare this drink. Four summers ago this was my drink of choice. Then I made it with Rye whiskey and sometimes I'd muddle other fruit in, my favorite being raspberry (followed by watermelon). I like this better than the mint julep and this is my favorite cocktail of all time. I bought ingredients to make some this weekend. Going to use regular bourbon. Last summer I was doing variations on this but with orgeat rather than syrup, with different base spirits. It was maybe the best with tequila or mescal, for my tastes, but it worked with a lot of different bases. Oh and the mint would be muddled and shaken along with the rest, so it ended up as a milky white drink with little bits of green floating in it.

Sub maple syrup in and you've got yourself a great Maple Bourbon Smash. Really adds a smokey element to this drink.

Yum. I was just gifted a wonderful Irish whiskey and I think I'll use it to make this. If it EVER warms up here in Kansas City, that is!

Love the smash. I have mint just for this purpose (ok, primarily for the smash but I use it for other drinks too).
