- Time to really test the £200 Perodua Kenari with an MOT test. Will it fail? Also includes a @misshubnut test and even a cameo by Little Miss HubNut as the Kenari proves the ultimate learner driver car. Apart from one thing...

Thank you.

Miss Hubnut is very competent at rambling along while driving, and she is an acute observer of the car’s behaviour. More of it please!
Yes, totally agree 👍
for someone who's a new driver, she's incredible. if the Advanced Drivers Test still exists, surely its a must in the future
I've been a driver for almost 50 years, but I doubt I could comment on the first drive in a new car as calmly and competently as Carly. Well done!
Miss Hubnut is really coming on with the confidence in driving!
This car is a great example of giving an old car a chance to do you proud. Well done little Kenari!
Very please the Perodua came through It's MOT with little effort.
It looks as though the tracking is toeing out, which will make the steering more numb around the centre. So fresh rubber and a wheel alignment will likely work wonders.
But, you've got to keep it!
Love the on-screen comments! As a note for Miss Hub Nut and anyone else that might benefit - red lights on the dashboard when in motion mean DANGER so should take great care. As Ian then pointed out and checked, the handbrake light is often the same indication that brake fluid is low so after a brake pipe change this could have been very serious.
Indeed. We pulled over to check, and I reasoned it was more likely a lamp fault than something serious.
From the front that looks more like a BMW than most modern BMWs! 😆
Betty sounded pretty nice when Ian drove past Miss Hubnut there!
That's probably because the exhaust is an UPnDOWN special, if memory serves me right.
My wife had a Matiz for 8 years and loved it - we had to scrap it due to MOT/rust/clutch slip all coming together and we got a Hyundai that she just never got on with - that was a stop gap that failed after 2 years on spectacular rust issues and she is back in a Matiz and has been for 3 years and is loving driving life. You know what you like sometimes and if you like what you like then nothing else will do eh?
Great to be going on a drive with Miss Hubnut, her confidence has really grown with the driving, listen to the Hublets that little car is a keeper, the condition of it and such a capable little car.
Lovely review from Miss Hubnut, driving and doing a review isnt easy but what a masterclass in making it work
Interesting that you take a cheap car, a simple fix to get through the MOT shows you dont have to spend lots of money to get on the road
Well done all around
A one litre car with no real depreciation potential - perfect for the Hublets (my first car was an 1963 850cc Mini rescued from going to scrap - for less than £90 ! - in 1975). I have loved old bangers ever since.
No car will ever be the love of the first car!! And looks like Mrs Hubnut is grappling with the hardest part of driving! The letting go of the first car
Australia used to require a separate brake fluid level and handbrake warning light. Not a bad idea as most people dont think brake fluid when it comes on.
The counter argument is the light gets tested every time you apply the handbrake
Great to see miss HubNut doing a review .
Need more of them .👍👍👍👍👍
Well spotted on the red light .
Most cars would have gone through it .Nothing wrong with your driving , very observant .
You are small , not restricted growth . What was that advert "Small but perfectly put together "My other half is 5ft tall And im 6.2 .
Good things come in small packages .
"Small but perfectly formed"
My lovely old nan who was only about4 foot 10 used to say good things come in small packages but so does poison 😂.
I think you're driving is fine miss Hubnut.
Police advanced traffic officer (ret/d) saying thatwas beautifully driven especially for a recent returning driver. If everyone drove as competently the roads would be much safer. I really hope that didn’t sound patronising or mansplaining, it wasn’t my intention.
I read this as a very nice complimentary post and if I was complimented by an expert like this I would be very happy. 😊
You are attracting some weird comments, below, but yes, "The level of engagement and enthusiasm in this community is contagious. It's like being caught in a whirlwind of excitement".
They're bloody infuriating! Trying to delete them in a car with poor signal...
@@HubNut Good luck receiving foot pics while doing so!
Are people really putting weird comments what is wrong with people jesus. @@sebastian0107
@@HA05GER Spam Bots! Crazy!
@@sebastian0107 Usually bottoms with those, isn't it?
Congratulations! That was a reasonably easy MOT. Well done little car!
excellent review from Miss Hubnut. Both she and the Kenari are keepers - the Hublets will need cars of their own come the time.
Top tip for stickering headlights, get some Kapton tape to put on the lens first as it sticks well but also comes off clean. It produices a decent selective yellow colour which can be used to see if you’ve masked the right place before covering it over with electrical tape (those ‘converters’ are a waste of money and the fitting sheets even con people by recomending using them on cars with adaptable beam pattern).
You could also use it to cover the whole lens if your planning on competing in the Le Mans GT class and need selective yellow lights.
Excellent work by Miss Hubnut on the test drive. Looks like you've been doing them for years with the ease of presentation.
A Miss Hubnut collection caper would be awesome.
Cracking job, Carly. Driving and talking coherently while driving is a skill.
Awesome video; as always!! Thank you Carly for your views of the Perodua. Thank you the Hubnut family!! Take care.
It's really interesting to get a different perspective from Miss HubNut. Particularly when comparing to Chemmy.
I hope you keep this on the fleet for a while!
I've often found in older cars that a wobble to check it's in neutral is not a good way of dong it, because of slack centring springs and the like, it's easier to move the gear knob a full left and full right to check.
Miss. HubNut appears to be able to take over the entire UA-cam channel when it comes to driving tests and presentation, although Ian's model and brand recognition is an art in itself.
🤣
What a great video. I really like both of you offering your thoughts on the same car and the comparison with the Charade. It’s also interesting hearing of the issues faced by shorter drivers when they’re driving a car. I have just the opposite at 6 foot 1, particularly as I age and get s bit less flexible. I was almost permanently stuck in a MG Midget at a recent car show, much to the amusement of friends and family!
Carly you need to rev it harder, hang on the gears a little longer 😉 a la 2cv
Clever comparison here by having Miss HubNut to do the review!
Brilliantly done miss HN... now we want to see you doing LGV, HGV, and PSV licences, and giving your feelings on all those vehicles!
Also a Challenger 3 tank when one becomes available.
"You can wobble the gearstick when it's in gear"
Ah! A 60's/70's Fiat influence!
I recall LJK Setright calling that a "Straightliner!" 🙂
A writer once compared the shifter on a US Chrysler product to stirring a wooden spoon in a bucket of ice cubes. Ever driven a Renault Dauphine/Caravelle and probably others? Way worse.
Having recently returned from a drive from Chester to Pembroke and back through the middle of Wales the 20mpH limits made sense apart from one problem. The number of people displaying fake 20mph limit signs. It got to the point when I almost stopped believing them unless they were electronic. Next time I will take photographs of them as defence if I ever miss seeing a real sign and get done. That sort of thing helps nobody.
Lovely to see Miss Hubnut driving different cars, her comparison with chemmy and Perodua was fair and unbias. I do slightly prefer the Perodua, but you have to keep chemmy for Miss Hubnut. Wonder if, when it's ready, will Miss Hubnut be driving the Pejaro?
Great video Ian, the front of the car reminds me of a Lancia x (well,, the grill and light set up)
Wow Miss Hubnut is a great car reviewer, very knowledgable and informative! Total natural at it!
Another great drive and commentary, Miss HubNut, good to hear another opinion and perspective on the HubNut fleet members.
As someone of height I often discounted Kei cars but I'm coming around to their charms!
Although it was barely nine years ago for me, it always feels nostalgic for me to see the EJ-DE in action. Got a yellow L701 as my first car in 2015.
That was great! Miss Hubnut has a nice way of explaining how the car is working. I hope she does more videos like this.
Loved this, The drive along with Miss Hubnut was brilliant her confidence has really grown in her driving !
I like torquey car. Continually changing gear loses its appeal after a few decades.
Very pleased to hear about the MOT. This could end up being one of your cost effective buys.
That was what I predicted the Berlingo would be....
The wobbly gear knob reminds me irresistibly of my old 1996 Fiat Uno 1.7 Diesel, like stirring a pot of thick porridge.
or any Peugeot from the 1980's I remember a big old 505 diesel estate of a friends dad, Even he (a man of many cars and much motoring) would occasionally get the wrong gear and just have to stir the gear stick until he found one that was suitable.
Miss Hub Nut reviews are what we need more of.. ❤️❤️❤️
Enjoyed Miss Hubnuts commentary on the Kenari.
I love these. How about a Mighty Car Mods colab to turbocharge Kenneth the Kenari to up the power to 100 bhp? Channel supporters will fund this!
Carly, you just drive lovely! Going thru the gear's is so nice, just like I would do...not every gear to the limit... Lovely! 😊 You're not the only one, that isn't completely happy with roads like that! Because you hardly have any oversight; car's coming from the other side are so suddenly there!
But driving? You're doing well girl! 😉
Just some brake pipes for the MOT. That’s remarkable.
It will be interesting to get your review when you swap back again to the Charade. Change can be unsettling and sometimes it is not until you go back to the previous car that you get the contrast. Don’t make your final decision until then.
Your drivings really good and coming along greatly. Your running commentary is fantastic! Natural. You both make a great team 👍👍
One thing to be aware of is the influence of tyres on the way a car responds. You were driving on well worn, old and pretty rubbishy tyres. I think you might be amazed at the difference even budget tyres would make whilst premium tyres (probably costing more than the car) would make you think it was a different car. In addition stopping distances in the wet (for those occasional wet days in Wales) will be hugely reduced.
Interesting comment from Miss Hubnut on gear selection for required speed. Our village has a 20mph, which is fine in third in my current Toyota, but required second in my previous BMW with its longer gearing. Both have a major displacement advantage over Carly's references too, being 1.4 and 2 litres larger respectively
I must add that (sometimes) driving through a village in 2nd gear does feel wasteful and antisocial too, certainly against some of the intention of the restriction
Interesting to see you guys comparing notes after driving the Kenari - again it's good that you managed to save yet another older car given the condition of the other two you encountered on your travels at the old dealership.
Maybe the variable valves aren't lifting, or aren't lifting as much for whatever reason? If the car hasn't seen much use, and not much maintainance maybe it's affected the variable valve sprocket. A few short-interval oil changes might help? You could also remove the solenoids and test them. Less labour than removing all the timing gubbins to actually check, anyway.
Although, a faulty solenoid should ignite the CEL.
Yes, might be similar to Rover K-Series / Fiat VVC variator failure issues…. if it’s designed to be variable and it sticks then it won’t drive right….
Gear linkage bushes seem to need changing too ?
I like the Canary. A neat little oddball car. It's a bummer we can't get stuff like this in the U.S.
Brilliant video miss Hubnut you are a great driver and fit into the channel well
So many memories, ours I. 2002 was an automatic and it had a fancy CD player and stereo system.
Of course Miss HubNut is going to always favour Chemmy, it's her first car. If I could have hung on to my first car after passing my test, I sooooo would have.
Go well little miss Hubnut. You will be an excellent driver and your insurance will always be less than young master Hubnut. 👍
That lay by you pulled into was my favourite in the area worked there for over 35 years.
Shade from trees grab some chips and something else from Aberaeron straight up to the lay by happy days 😂😂😂😂
That's a proper review of Miss HubNut, very entertaining as well!
Well done Ian and Carly a great video and Carly you did really well as a new driver with talking to the camera and driving you are a natural reviewer much as you like Chemmy and Ian has probably said this it’s good to experience as many or as wide range of cars as possible and it’s something I’ve done in almost 30 years of driving best wishes to you all and love that little car looking forward to the perodua merch
I always like your driving video's in Wales, I'm from the Netherlands but have a friend close by where you driving around. it's time to visit again I think 😀
You’re doing so well carleigh, love this car. As I mentioned previously, I had a daihatsu move years ago, it was fabulous. Wish I’d kept it!
Great little review there Carly! Very connected with how the car is and how it feels to you & that came across really well in your narrative. 👍
It was nice seeing miss HubNut doing the driving and talking
The Kenari has the blue sunstrip of luxury at the top of the windscreen 👍
Excellent review from Miss Hubnut. I think it will probably have to go to make way for a Twingo!
I enjoyed that format. Get the gear linkage to be more positive (if possible) and that “nice” may change to ❤
To be able to commentate whilst driving shows that driving is becoming so much more natural for Miss Hubnut now. So much more confidence than before! One thing I do hope that Miss HN learned from this drive is that the red light on the dash is not just a warning for the handbrake - it also warns of low fluid in the main brake system. If it comes on during a drive it's always a very good idea to stop asap and check the brake fluid level. But certainly a nice little comparison between chemy and the Perodua, driving differences nicely explained!
Yup. Aware. Pedal response was being carefully monitored and it wasn't far from noticing the fault to pulling in for inspection.
Brilliant video ... on screen chemistry is hilarious
Great video the Kenari is definitely a grower! - The indignation at 22:07 made me chuckle
That was very enjoyable. Great driving and great commentary by Miss Hubnut.
Excellent commentary - sounded like someone who passed their test years ago. Also enjoyed the handbrake warning light jeopardy.
Watching this makes me want to drive my Daihatsu, sadly she has a seized calliper again so I can't. Great driving Miss Hubnut by the way!
Miss Hubnut is a natural and has a passion for it bless her, might be worth getting the tracking checked when you do the tyres because there's a load of toe out going on there i think 😊
Miss HubNut, I think you sell yourself short (as it were!) Your driving is very competent, particularly for a new driver. The way you dealt with that oncoming vehicle on a very narrow lane - no panic, just found a safe place to pull in - textbook!! I would feel very safe as a passenger with you at the wheel.😀
Don't worry,I was told by my instructor after I passed my test. To forget what I had just learned,as without L plates you would end up dead!!!😂
Lovely little car folks and greetings from Cornwall
Loved this, especially Ms HubNut's observations and commentary; fab reviewing. Love hte song at the end XD
Are there sharks with lasers?
Wobbly gearstick might be a simple fix have a ganders for at any rubber mountings on the selector and linkage pins etc on the cable/rods.
Absolutely brilliant video Ian miss hubnut ❤👍 what a lovely car brilliant
From a new driver to a road test. Miss Hubnut passed with flying colours. But failed on the wiper test. More work needed.😊
In her defence, Ian had done a wiper test on the Netherlands trip.
Great review Miss Hubnut. Even got a running commentary on gear usage !
This video is exactly what I'd hoped for since Miss Hubnut passed her driving test, Miss hubnut review of a car, compared to your review of the same car. Great to hear different opinions.
Good work Miss HubNut! Even though you had never driven that car before, you seemed to settle down pretty quickly. I would say you are a little harsh on yourself, but that just means you just care about your driving, and is way more preferable to someone who doesn't care. Sounds like the bushes in the gear linkage probably need changing.
I think we need a “Not my washing machines” T-shirt 😁 congrats on the MOT pass 👏
Great review, Miss HubNut, most enjoyable. Look forward to your next one. 😁 We shall ignore HubNuts' digs at poor Chemmy Lol.
I do like this car ,Mrs hubnut great on board review and great confidence driving with on board camera and talking 👍
An excellent comparison video between the Chemmy and the Perodga from Miss Hubnuts point of view well done
Great review from Miss Hubnut, a natural and calm stream of consciousness to camera = good TV presenter but sometimes you have to accept the truth - she doesn't want to keep it for herself! (agree that it's great for the next gen to learn in though) .. Alto RS Works next perhaps for Miss HN? - good visibility, relatively practical but lots more fun on those twisty Welsh backroads :)
On my way home from Northwestern Austria yesterday I saw two nice unusual cars. A silver Suzuki Wagon R parked somewhere near Vitis and a beige Nissan Urvan that's looking slightly sorry for itself. It's been sitting next to a garage and petrol station just west of Horn for at least ten years and it hasn't had number plates on for a while, although it could be on shared plates (up to three vehicles may share one set of number plates and you only pay tax and insurance on one, the one that would be the most expensive).
Good driving, that is a horrible road and you are driving it much better than I do!
Fun video & it's great to see Miss Hubnut on the daft roads I love. Aberaeron is an adventure in traffic
Many of our driving lessons with Little Miss HubNut are in Aberaeron. It's a very good test!
Ms HubNut is a very considered and safe driver.
Probably the difference between the gear ratios of the two cars , one being slightly taller (bad Choice of words) a month of use would allow a familiarization. For a couple of hundred, not a bad list of faults Ian.
So a Kenari has a wobbly, stir the pudding and throw it in like an Allegro had, oh how times haven't changed lol
Miss HubNut you are just lovely never change.
Once the Kenari is cleaned, a bit of rust proofing underneath, the new tyres and service, it has to be worth a thousand hasn't it , also chemmy is way cheaper to tax lol, a name idea for the Kenari - Ken
I loved your commentary, Mrs. HubNut!!! Your observations of the cars was top-notch! Do you have to start out on low-displacement cars when you're learning in the UK? Or is it just hard to get insurance for over a certain displacement? Anyway, it seems like a good idea. It's even good for enthusiasts to start out with tiny "under-powered" cars so they can learn the joys if driving a slow car fast. There's also a lot to be said for learning on a manual transmission. In the past i would have said you might be in a situation where you HAD to drive stick, but that's not likely here in the US anymore. But it still gives you a closer feeling to the car.
Insurance makes low capacity desirable, but there are no restrictions otherwise.
Get the tracking looked at when you get the tyres fitted, looks like it might be toeing out?
I’d also clean up the underside and treat with rust protection, one with a rust converter built in.
