Awesome photos! Discovered that film this summer, and I've been using it ever since. Absolutely love it! Just bought ten rolls and filled up my fridge. Then discovered they don't really need to be kept cold, haha :-)

I do most of my landscapes with the Fuji GW690 and like to use Ilford Pan F Plus for long exposures. But recently I switched to Kodak T-Max 100 for all my outside shooting. It is a good all purpose film and I see no increased grain over the PAN F Plus. Wonderful to scan and the thick base lays perfectly flat!
Hey Paul - Great stuff again and thanks so much for the regular and consistent posts. They really keep me inspired, and I always look forward to watching you each week. Not because I like the genre of landscape (have zero interest in film, B&W and landscapes), but that is not the point. I just love it that out there somewhere, each week you are ferreting around, looking for the shot, never giving up and rain hail or shine - from nothing - you always come up with something worthwhile to share. Though I only ever shoot street/travel/portraits/people, we still share that universal passion to get out there with a camera in hand and follow our dreams. My wife and I will come to NZ in the next couple of years to see family (we are in Western Australia). My sister is in Tauranga and my dad in Waipukurau, so when we are passing down the Napier/Taupo, I'd like to touch base! Cheers Philip

I tried one roll of this film and fell in love with it. Incredibly fine grained for something as fast as 200. Just the right amount of contrast with inky, moody deep shadows. Anything that gets me closest to the look I want in-camera so there’s less (or nothing) I have to do in post is a big plus in my book. Definitely suggest giving it a few rinse cycles as a pre-wash though, even if you one-shot your developer - this stuff washes out like pure black ink!

Rollei superpan 200 is the film I always use at the moment in my 6x7 camera. I haven’t had any problems with it, but I have heard that the emulsion is delicate. I like it because of its red sensitivity and use it with an infrared filter to increase contrast.
I choose different emulsions based on the type of lighting and subject matter I'm shooting. If I'm shooting 4x5, on a tripod, or the film speed or depth of field factor in, I grab the emulsion that works best in a given scenerio. AGFA APX 100 and TRI-X 400 were my go to films. I have since replaced the APX 100 with Fomapan 100 and lately trying Ilford FP4. I added Ilford HP5 when pushing or for high contrast lighting.
Finding the right combination of film/developer can take some time. I'm trying keep it simple and sticking with ADOX formulas for Rodinal and FX-39. I never liked HP5 results (too flat/muddy) until I started using ADOX FX-39 developer. FP4 also works well with FX-39 even though FX-39 was meant to maximize results for T-GRAIN/Delta films. I think you can't go wrong with Kodak, Ilford or Fuji films when it comes to quality control and consistent results.
I have shot Rollei RPX 25 roll film and although the negatives look amazing on the light table, I can't get my Epson V800 with Silverfast 8 film profiles to properly scan. I think the high contrast between clear film base and the dense parts of the image is the problem. I have had better results with RPX 100 as far as scanning. I had good scans/negatives using Rollei's 400 Infrared with a Hoya R72 infrared filter in both 35mm and 120.

Awesome episode Paul! I really liked the pic at 5.30, and that rolling pasture pictures was fantastic, well worth a print run! I liked your thoughts about the stereotypical long exposure shot, i liked the clouds in that shot most of all. Anyway keep on doing what you do!

I don’t know if you’ve shot delta 100 at all but I’ve been shooting it a lot lately and have really liked the results. I shoot it at box speed then develop in rodinal 1+50 20 degrees 14 minutes, 30 second initial agitation then 2 inversions every 30 seconds.
Tried to get some recently my supplier had run out.
Paul, I have shot several rolls of Rollei IR film and had the problem you described with the tape. The Hasselblad magazines have a very tight and torturous path the film must take and I think this contributes to problems like this. I has several nightmarish feeding issues with the new CatLabs 80 120 film because the tape strip was too narrow and the tape would release while winding to the first frame. What a f**king mess!! CatLabs says the problem has been fixed . . we will see as I have 18 more rolls. Carry on Carrying On!!! Edited to add . . . in my experience stick with Ilford and Kodak. I Like Fuji Slide film and B&W Acros but they curl so badly It's a nightmare trying to scan them
I liked the field image, certainly one for a canvas or frame - the Rollei film looks like it produces some decent results.
Fantastic photos! Regarding the sealing band at the end of the film, I normally never use it besides the issue you unfortunately encountered. I found it hard to peel it off again before putting the film inside a development reel. I use a rubber band instead to seal the film after taking it out of the cartridge. Sits right and can be easily removed even in the dark.
Me too I usually have trouble working out how to get the tape backing off.

I highly recommend the Rollei Ortho 25. Shoot it handheld with my Rollei TLRs, metering in my head. Been shooting over 40 years.

Hi Paul . . nice video as usual, you inspire me. I am an old school traditionalist. I have come back to analog photography in my retirement. When you speak of the "Classic" look . . . I always think of Kodak Tri-X . . . has always been my go-to, even today. If I want that "Classic" look I develop in either D76 1+1 or Rodinal 1+50, depending on the grain I am after. Do you do Tri-X??

The issues with rollei are very common with 120 film, I've had many issues with it and they've been known of since 2017. Started from the 120 backing paper fiasco with ilford and it affected every manufacturer since they were providing paper for the whole industry.
We call the tick marks "rollei rain", retro 80s/400s are Agfa aviphot survelience film that's been re-purposed. It was designed to be used in military airial cameras wich used a 9" film can with no backing paper, as such these films have many issues with paper in close contact.
The solution: shoot these films in 35mm format with no worries, for medium format I very highly recommend using rollei infrared and shooting it as a normal b&w film, it was designed as a stills camera film and has no issues to speak of. I personally love the look of these films and have gone back and forth with macodirect extensively to come to this recommendation. The high contrast extended red sensitivity that these films have pair well with orange and red filters.

Weird issue, thanks for sharing your experience with this film, Paul. For a long time I have wanted to try the Rollei Retro 400s cause I find it absolutely gorgeous, but they are hard to get hold of in Norway. I wonder if anybody reading this has had the same issues with that film? Another thought. Noticed that you have neglected the M6 lately. All good between you and it? ;) In one of your next videos, would you give us a short tour of the Hasselblad? Never seen one in the flesh and would be nice to take a closer look to know where you do what on it. I have a relatively good idea about it though, having seen you use it in your latest videos. If you think there’s really not so much to using it, I accept that :). Interesting mix of some lovely pictures, Paul! Have a nice day!

Hi Paul, as Jakob says a new CFV is announced and should be availalbe soon. I payed for my CFV-50c about 9000 Euro (including all taxes in Germany), the original price before taxes was 7400 Euros. But the digitalback is no longer produced, you get only on the second-hand-market for approx 5000 Euros in excellent condition. The CFVII-50c will bee less expensive as the X1D II is also much cheapier then the first released X1D. M.
This reminded me of your early videos. Lovely sound as well really added to the atmosphere. The pics came alive for me as soon as the girl appeared, you have a great way of telling people's stories with a camera. Hasselblad strapped to a drone next surely? No pressure 😉

Hey, I'm up to date with you before you reached 10K (which is going to happen real soon).
I've no idea if the Hasselblad has a backplate but I've had similar issues with a few old cameras where the backplate has lost its 'tension' and is scraping the film, although it tends to come out as long lines rather than the bitty irregular ones you seem to have, almost looks like wee cracks in the film emulsion, best guess would be the film was stored at too cold a temperature at some point.

Superpan 200 is a nice film but now gone too expensive here in Canada. I have shot about a dozen rolls of it in various cameras and never encountered any issues with it. Maybe you got a roll that had an isolated problem with it..
Isn't Rollei film just re-badged film with a new iso, so pulled or pushed. It's probably an Ilford 125 speed film at a marked up price.

Love the chilled theme of your videos such a shame it’s interrupted by the dumb upbeat advert splitting the movie I understand the need to make a dollar anyway you can and I encourage it but genuine question do you get any control in the upload settings of where the ads are placed or is that just a random placement by you tube? Paul C Smith Photographer all good mate was just interested to know what the control was on one hand the ads are in right place as a viewer im engaged so scramble to skip the ad to keep viewing in the other hand when you get to a good point and some dorky ad comes on it’s distracting. Hi Dashan - where is the best place to purchase film in NZ? I'm a NZer living in the UK but coming home for 6 weeks shortly and don't really want to bring piles of film stock with me if it is readily available in NZ
@@waynenelson7723 I'm not familiar with 120 film availability in NZ but would assume that the UK has more options, better price. Suggest you stock up on Ilford and other stocks in the UK if you have some specialty you like, i.e. the new Ilford Ortho Plus 80. I've traveled all over without issue, i.e. just came back from Spain with 12 5-packs of film. No x-ray for carryon baggage.

I don't know what the problem is with your film, I've never seen it on my rolls of Superpan 200. But my local lab is unable to scan it because the base disappears when you develop it or something like that. The Fuji scanner they use is unable to "see" the lines between the frames. I think the Retropan films has the same problem. The Rollei films are a bit unusual, but I like them a whole lot. Hardly use anything else these days.
Please improve sound quality of your video it is so low compering to sound of other UA-cam videos
