I realise it’s an old clip/vid, but great work, I really enjoy your enthusiasm including making the chisel to prep the log.
You’ve really encouraged me to strip down my leg vice, clean it, wire brush it, linseed oil it and remount it.
We are only custodians of our blacksmith tools and devices, and hopefully they’ll pass on down to the next generation of enthusiasts.
    Thanks from OZ down under.

beautiful strap, goes great with that grand ol' stump! i elected to create a slotted "catching plate" beneath the foot of my vise to make any top-down impact spread out over a larger surface area. This was mostly because i'm a bit paranoid of cracking the concrete floor. great job!

For your bolts, try soak in white vinegar overnight. That will remove the zinc plating. Then finish with the oil.

Looks great, Will you put a steel plate under the vise leg to protect your concrete floor from chipping?

No, I didn't put a plate under the leg. It may cause trouble one day but I move the stump out of my way so often it hasn't caused any issues yet.

Thanks, planning to mount my Grandpas vise soon and this helps. Is the leg supported on the floor also? I thought the post vise works in the way that the post takes all the beating but here looks like the stump is the main support and I like this idea, just let me know if I am wrong or right here please ;)

The leg of the vise hits the floor, but if you leave it a little high you can put a plate of steel under it if you worry about scratching the floor its pretty rough on concrete.

If you want to remove zinc from your hardware, just dip it in muriatic acid. All precautions for using acid applies. Do this OUTSIDE. I cannot emphasize that enough. Don't care how well your shop is ventilated. Do it OUTSIDE. That zinc will disappear almost immediately. Then dip the hardware in a solution of 1 tbsp of baking soda/1 gal water to neutralize the acid on your pieces. Zinc can also be burned off. Square head lag bolts would look better on your project, by the way.

A router would've been much better than a chisel
