  • Hey y'all! After buying an Iron City post vise about six months ago I finally built a proper stand for it. My woodworking skills were definitely rusty, but I'm always glad to get my hands dirty in the shop!
    I have the materiel list for this build below if you're interested in that!
    6x6 (pressure treated)
    -8ft total
    4x4 (pressure treated)
    -30ft total
    8in long lag screws
    -14 EA
    6in long lag screws
    -24 EA
    Washers
    -At least 38 EA
    **The diameter of the lag screws don't really matter. But make sure you have the right size drill bit for the recommended pilot hole! I was using a smaller drill bit, and it made driving them in much harder than it should have been.

    Thanks for the video. Good idea.
    Do you wish you had used a non-swivel caster after 11 months. of use?

    • @bloodmountainboys9184
      @bloodmountainboys9184  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, definitely! I find the wheels bind up whenever they’re allowed to rotate freely. I think a non-swivel caster would completely fix that.

      @@bloodmountainboys9184 if you are thinking of replacing them you might consider these castors or something similar. They have a cam where you can step on them and they elevate what they are attached to so you move it to where you want then release the cam and put them back on the ground. I put them on the work table that my grinder and post vice are on,

      @@TheJACKCOLORADO you would need 4 of these casters and they can get in the way (they swivel and don’t go over bumps very well also) I use a lot of these and they sometimes are tripping hazards

    A simple backup plan for anyone not wanting to mess with casters, swivel or no, binding up, is a simple hand truck. Bigger wheels can make a difference, especially in a wood shop if you have one. One extension cord or dropped screw or literal piece of scrap and casters bind up. With a heavy load, once it tips you're screwed. But personally I am going to copy something like this and put casters on, but use my hand truck when it gets questionable. Great video, thanks. (I do a lot of work with 6x6 treated, you may want to look into Timberlok screws)

      That's the thing with a blacksmith shop where these leg vices come in handy or any workshop in general there is always bits of shit on the ground, coke, charcoal , steel scraps, wood chips, nails etc that mess with castors no end. A hand truck sounds like a handy workshop addition.

    That stand would cost a Fortune today with Soaring Lumber prices.

      LOL very good point. It would be more than the vise! Lucky I built it when I did.

    Thanks for the video. I to need to move my vice, as shop space is like yours. Got my 4" pole vice 6 mo ago and need to do some work on it. Plus build a stand like yours! Thanks again!

    Noticed the casters were changed. Thought that the swivel ones wouldn’t work very well. But it appears to be a useful build.

    Threaded rod with washers and bolts works best. Go all the way through

      Brandon Cooper Yea I think I agree with you on that one. If I had a larger drill press I probably would have went this route. I used that method on my anvil stand and it snugged together very nicely.

    You need to use a bigger drill for your pilot hall and you got the wrong wheels you gotta use 30 wheels not swivel😊😊😊😊

    I just picked one up myself. I heard that wood isn't the best base material. How are you finding it to be working for you? Thanks!

    • @bloodmountainboys9184
      @bloodmountainboys9184  4 роки тому +2

      I will say that metal stands are definitely ideal. But if you need something mobile like I do wood works just fine! I don't do any heavy forging, just making damascus right now, so I haven't had an issue with it.

  • @johnwilkerson9804
    @johnwilkerson9804 4 роки тому +1

    So how’s it holding up? Anything you wish you did differently? Also I assumed those casters would cause problems so did they? I just got a vise but have no welding skills 😅

    • @bloodmountainboys9184
      @bloodmountainboys9184  4 роки тому +1

      I haven't had any issues with it! The casters can be kinda finicky, but as long as you stay on a hard surface they work just fine. In hindsight, I would definitely recommend using a fixed wheel and not casters lol. What kind of vise did you get??

    • @johnwilkerson9804
      @johnwilkerson9804 4 роки тому

      I got a 6” Kanca new one. It’s probably half trash to begin with just because it’s new but it is heavy and it is pretty lol

    are you still using this set up? I just got my post vise and was thinking about following your setup. anything you would do different?

    • @bloodmountainboys9184
      @bloodmountainboys9184  3 роки тому +2

      I am still using it! I would definitely change the casters to fixed wheels. The swiveling casters are a pain to get to the right angle when you’re trying to move it.
      Also, I would use a heavier duty lag screw if possible. And make sure to pre drill to the correct depth! I had an issue snapping a few bolts because of this.
      I also don’t think pressure treated wood is necessary because I have some gaps know because it’s dried out so much.
      Good luck with the build!
