  • Learn how sugars are transported in plants. Translocation of organic substances, like sucrose, is transported to all cells in the plant through the phloem. Learn the structure of phloem tissues, companion cells and the sieve tube elements. Learn the source to sink model, mass flow hypothesis, translocation and the use of tracers and ringing experiments to investigate transport in plants.

Hi miss estruch I’m a little confused. You said that when sucrose is actively transported into the sink cell water potential in sieve tube elements decreases, won’t it increase as more sucrose is being actively transported from the sieve tube elements into the sink cells so less sucrose to lower the water potential?

When sucrose goes into phloem, water potential decreases. So water moves in from surrounding cells and the xylem. Water potential increases again, then moves by mass flow to sink. When it reaches the sink. Sucrose moves out. Water potential decreases. Water moves out of cell aswell.
Remember pure water has a water potential of 0. So the more sucrose there is makes a more negative water potential

So we don't need to know about the co-transport with the protons?

It doesn't seem to come up on mark schemes for AQA

@@MissEstruchBiology ok that’s amazing to learn. I’ll mention it regardless, but your channel should be viewed by all AQA students.

for investigating translocation is this part of the evidence for translocation? (OCR A spec)
