This video give me the feels, but its not rooted in reality. It discounts the real struggles that families who are dealing with severe autism face. Its offensive to suggest that anyone with a severe autism diagnosis can overcome their disability to become successful by being taught some skills. Its perfectly appropriate to ask some people on the spectrum about their diagnosis, but many people with autism lack the ability to speak altogether.
first of all, severe autism is not a real diagnosis. autism is not severe or simple, it is as complex and differs for every person. this man does not "get over" his autism, but instead gets to use his traits to his benefit for the role. theatre only strengthens with diversity and is very possible. i suggest watching more plays and musicals with disabled actors. One of my favorites is a production of hunchback where quasimodo 's actor is deaf. it is incorporated but not the focus of the show and makes it an amazing performance that is available online
The fact that he got a diagnosis at 21 when there is no agreed upon diagnosis criteria for adults adds to the issue. If he is truly on the spectrum, he is so minimally impacted (based on his own descriptions and words from interviews) that it's kind of unreasonable to label it a disability. By that standard, the majority of people are disabed. People got upset about Maddie Zeigler's protrayal of music, but his actions in the Curious Incident is no less feigned. He's using a stereotype of someone more impacted is no more moral than Maddie's.
Don't people get jobs based on talent? Who are you to tell producers how to make their show or film! You don't get work because your creepy and just expect to get a role because it's a person like you. Actors play roles that don't represent who they actually are. Plus I have seen Curious Case already and they lead could of been anyone as long as they played it well. Stop asking for everything from everyone, just do it or shut up about it. You do realize there are autistic people that are good in acting and don't get the chance?
