    The ceiling fan in my sons bedroom was spinning pretty slow on the highest setting. I just changed out the capacitor and the speed has increased drastically. The capacitor I used had five wires, but still applied the same method in the video. Thanks! 👍

    Double check what the parts store gives you as a "suitable" replacement. They messed up on mine. Instead of a regular capacitor, they gave me a flux capacitor. When I turned on the fan, I found myself back in 1958.

    Just to let you folks know. Some fan companies will send you the proper capacitor for free if you call them and tell them the model fan you have, even if the fan is long out of warranty. This is what I did and I got the capacitor and shipping free.

    I had to do the same thing to Harbor Breeze Teak I got last year. High was really slow, about the half the speed as it's supposed to be, and medium was a little faster than high. After replacing the capacitor, high speed went back to normal, just that medium and low slowed down a tiny bit.

    So I have one that got to be a single speed fan, bought a capacitor that very close to original and initially had a multi speed fan that soon went to single speed and now it doesn't work at all. Is this an indication that the fan motor it self is causing the issues, just two bad capacitors or a bad capacitor and a second capacitor that wasn't matched up to the motor? And if I get a capacitor that was matched to the fan and it was good should I get a fan that runs well for a long time?

    My problem is different, my fan turns very slowly without any power going to it. I changed out the wall switch and turned the breaker off, the fan still turns very slowly (4-5 RPMs). Can a faulty capacitor allow the fan to turn with the electrical charge from the capacitor without any power going to it? Thank you for your help.

    I disassembled the 220v fan motor, cleaned and greased it but still slow. So it must be the capacitor which is 1.2uF/400vAC. I found it online 1.2uF but 450v instead of 400v. Is it ok? And what is the difference in fan functionality?

    When I use the remote on my Minka Aire ceiling fan it won't always start. when I give the blades a push it starts and seems to go up to speed. Is this a problem where the capacitor isn't giving the fan "the kick" to start rotation? Thank you for any response and your video.

    Hey, I have a question. Towards the end of your video, when the camera is pointing up towards the ceiling, I see that the power cable for the fan is running on the outside and it's not wired on the inside of the ceiling. There's a thin, plastic cover I see going towards the fan that looks like it's adhered to the ceiling. Did you do this or was it already installed before you moved into your place? If you did this yourself, did you make a video when your installed it? I'd like to know how to do that and what materials you used since I have this dilemma where I want a ceiling fan/lights but there is no power or light fixture in the room I want to install these things in. I had seen another video where someone installed a pendulum, swag lamp and attached a very long, metal chain to it. Basically, they took a very long, electric wire and attached it to the light with the some wire nuts, like the ones you used in your video, and at the other end of the wire they attached it to a plug so it can be plugged into a wall outlet. I liked the idea of taking a regular, light fixture and wiring it to create your own custom, ceiling, light fixture that you can hang without needing to have electricity already in the ceiling but I wasn't so sure about using a long chain with the wire. I like the look of the plastic cover as it looks cleaner and neater than a bulky, metal chain going across the ceiling.

    • @ZipZapDIY
      @ZipZapDIY  6 років тому +1

      hi, sorry for the delayed response. I installed this fan on a concrete ceiling, attached with tapcon screws. The wire is run along the ceiling in a "cable concealer" see it here: amzn.to/2JoaJjT the wire is romex 14/2, it runs from the fan (a cut out in the fan "bezel?" was made so the wire could enter cleanly. The wire runs along the ceiling and then enters the wall, it runs down the wall to an existing outlet to grab its power. This may not be up to code since when a wire is outside of a wall it needs to be a "lamp cord" or inside of a conduit. I felt ok using romex and the concealer considering I ran it along the ceiling, there was very little danger of it being bumped, snagged or injured in any way. (commissions earned on Amazon Link)

    Hi, I fear my question will make me look dumb, but I noticed that the capacitor you removed was connected by marettes already, so why did you cut the wires to replace the capacitor? Why not undo the previous marettes take out the old wires and twist the new ones in their place?

    • @ZipZapDIY

      Hi Mike, the marettes / twist-on wire connectors are crimped at the factory, so they need to be cut off.

      Based on what I saw same steps except you don't cut anything the controller unit has a harness with connector. Theoretically you just order said part it should have a harness end on it then detach controller unit and replace. Even if they're cheap and leave you bare wires you cut as far away from the connector closer to old unit and connect with butt connectors to new unit to harness clip following color coded wiring.

    • @ZipZapDIY
      @ZipZapDIY  6 років тому +6

      the capacitor stores energy, like a battery, if you have a good capacitor, it will store electricity and there is a shock risk even if you cut the power.

    • @ViperLGH
      @ViperLGH 6 років тому

      Capacitor does store energy, but its role in fan is to produce net magnetic torque in motor. Capacitor is connected to fan the whole time, so when we switch it off, I believe the charges already flow to other parts and neutralized.

      Either the fan speed switch is also faulty or it was reassembled improperly.

    On my fan, I have 2 pull chains, One for the light, and one for the fan. It takes 3 pulls to get the light to come on, and the fan only has high and low, not medium. The guy that replaced the switch for me, said he must have put it on backwards, How do I fix it? I'm not sure how it went on in the beginning. Help?

    I cringed when I saw you splice the wires. You can undo and redo those electrical crimps using pliers, it's much cleaner and professional.

    Does that capacitor only regulate the fan motor or does it also affect the light kit? Or are the caps regulating the light kit only in the wireless controller unit at the top?

      The capacitor is only for the fan portion.

    During a low voltage current while the fan was still running i thought its not a matter of concern but after that when the voltage was normal my fan started moving very much slower, what could be the possible defect with my fan?

    How do you discharge electricty stored in the capacitor?

    • @ZipZapDIY
      @ZipZapDIY  6 років тому

      if you have a pull chain style fan, turn off the power for the fan then pull the chain several times. If no pull chain and you suspect the capacitor is good then I suggest you watch a few videos on how to discharge safely.

    So if you get a shock from your capacitor , then you know that is not the problem. It must be the 3 speed switch?

    Instead of cutting off the old capacitor, what if you just add it to make it two capacitors?
