The ceiling fan in my sons bedroom was spinning pretty slow on the highest setting. I just changed out the capacitor and the speed has increased drastically. The capacitor I used had five wires, but still applied the same method in the video. Thanks! 👍
Double check what the parts store gives you as a "suitable" replacement. They messed up on mine. Instead of a regular capacitor, they gave me a flux capacitor. When I turned on the fan, I found myself back in 1958.
I have a 3-speed shop fan that has only had slow speed since it was new. I will take a look at the capacitor. I hope I can get it to do high speed. Thanks for the motivational video.
Just to let you folks know. Some fan companies will send you the proper capacitor for free if you call them and tell them the model fan you have, even if the fan is long out of warranty. This is what I did and I got the capacitor and shipping free.
I had to do the same thing to Harbor Breeze Teak I got last year. High was really slow, about the half the speed as it's supposed to be, and medium was a little faster than high. After replacing the capacitor, high speed went back to normal, just that medium and low slowed down a tiny bit.
So I have one that got to be a single speed fan, bought a capacitor that very close to original and initially had a multi speed fan that soon went to single speed and now it doesn't work at all. Is this an indication that the fan motor it self is causing the issues, just two bad capacitors or a bad capacitor and a second capacitor that wasn't matched up to the motor? And if I get a capacitor that was matched to the fan and it was good should I get a fan that runs well for a long time?
My problem is different, my fan turns very slowly without any power going to it. I changed out the wall switch and turned the breaker off, the fan still turns very slowly (4-5 RPMs). Can a faulty capacitor allow the fan to turn with the electrical charge from the capacitor without any power going to it? Thank you for your help.
there's another video where a guy uses a digital multimeter set to capacitance to show that a bad one is reading 3.3 ūF when it should be 5.5. He tests the new cap the same way and it reads 5.5ūF
I have an old Casablanca fan then I want to keep. It has a pull string that turns the fan on. And it has a rheostat type knob attached to the fan that you can turn to adjust the speed but it is broken and the only speed I have inside. I can't seem to find a part or don't know how to replace it. Can I put a pull chain on it
thanks for the video sir.. very helpful.. i would like to ask whether am i able to replace a 1.25 microfarad / 400VAC with 1.5 or 2 microfarad / 600 VAC? as i’m not able to find the same one..
I disassembled the 220v fan motor, cleaned and greased it but still slow. So it must be the capacitor which is 1.2uF/400vAC. I found it online 1.2uF but 450v instead of 400v. Is it ok? And what is the difference in fan functionality?
I had a similar problem where the fan was stuck in high speed. I have replaced the capacitor on the fan and it didn’t make a difference. Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you
I have a couple fans in my house with the same problem.. Wondering your opinion on it because I can't find exact examples of the problem.. my problem is the fans both have low speeds no medium the medium setting is as slow as slow on one and as fast as fast on the other fan.. any ideas? Hope that makes sense how I explained it..
Hi, my fan doesn't start at all. I tested the power inlet and it is OK. How can I test the capacitor with a multimeter? Do I have to disconnect it from the wires?
I hot a Casablanca fan, the second speed slow down just like the third speed. If I replace the capacitor, does the problem will go away? Thank you for your help.
When I use the remote on my Minka Aire ceiling fan it won't always start. when I give the blades a push it starts and seems to go up to speed. Is this a problem where the capacitor isn't giving the fan "the kick" to start rotation? Thank you for any response and your video.
I have a Harbor Breeze (from Lowes) that even on the slowest speed, is too fast. Is there any way to slow down the speed, maybe by getting a new capacitor?
that is very strange! the capacitor would not have any effect on that. If the fan worked properly before and now it does not, i would suspect the control unit.
It's always worked properly, I just want to slow down the slowest setting. Is there any way to do that on fans or do I just have to purchase a new fan that has a slower speed? Thank you!
Ryan T. Smith hi Ryan, I’ve just read your post with you saying about wanting to slow down your slowest speed ceiling fan. I have the same problem. I’ve just bought a new ceiling fan but the slowest speed is too fast. Did you solve your problem ? If so how did you do it mate? Cheers Mike
TheZippy170 Hey Mike. I wish I had better news but I never found a solution. I ended up having to upgrade to Fanimation fans, which are great fans but a much more expensive option. Please let me know if you run across a better solution and I’ll do the same.
just installed a new ceiling fan from HD but i didnt install the speed control switch yet ,when i turn it on with the typical light switch it comes on at a slow speed , youd think it would be the highest speed ,do you think bad capacitor
Hey, I have a question. Towards the end of your video, when the camera is pointing up towards the ceiling, I see that the power cable for the fan is running on the outside and it's not wired on the inside of the ceiling. There's a thin, plastic cover I see going towards the fan that looks like it's adhered to the ceiling. Did you do this or was it already installed before you moved into your place? If you did this yourself, did you make a video when your installed it? I'd like to know how to do that and what materials you used since I have this dilemma where I want a ceiling fan/lights but there is no power or light fixture in the room I want to install these things in. I had seen another video where someone installed a pendulum, swag lamp and attached a very long, metal chain to it. Basically, they took a very long, electric wire and attached it to the light with the some wire nuts, like the ones you used in your video, and at the other end of the wire they attached it to a plug so it can be plugged into a wall outlet. I liked the idea of taking a regular, light fixture and wiring it to create your own custom, ceiling, light fixture that you can hang without needing to have electricity already in the ceiling but I wasn't so sure about using a long chain with the wire. I like the look of the plastic cover as it looks cleaner and neater than a bulky, metal chain going across the ceiling.
hi, sorry for the delayed response. I installed this fan on a concrete ceiling, attached with tapcon screws. The wire is run along the ceiling in a "cable concealer" see it here: amzn.to/2JoaJjT the wire is romex 14/2, it runs from the fan (a cut out in the fan "bezel?" was made so the wire could enter cleanly. The wire runs along the ceiling and then enters the wall, it runs down the wall to an existing outlet to grab its power. This may not be up to code since when a wire is outside of a wall it needs to be a "lamp cord" or inside of a conduit. I felt ok using romex and the concealer considering I ran it along the ceiling, there was very little danger of it being bumped, snagged or injured in any way. (commissions earned on Amazon Link)
Hi, I fear my question will make me look dumb, but I noticed that the capacitor you removed was connected by marettes already, so why did you cut the wires to replace the capacitor? Why not undo the previous marettes take out the old wires and twist the new ones in their place?
if you already cut out your bad capacitor and you really needed to use your fan but did not have a replacement capacitor yet, could you just put your fan wires together, in your example there it would be red to white. What would happen.
Good video. Thanks for the effort. Only one issue. In the beginning you seem to use the words "controller and capacitor " interchangeably. Then never show the controller
I found a ton of information about fans running slow. But my fan has begun running super fast. Slow is now fast, medium is now very fast, and fast is now atomic particle accelerator speed. What would cause that?
Fan would only operate in slow speed, I also took a control module out of another fan and tested it, and also used a multi-meter to test the capacitor. If I did not have a multi-meter to confirm, I would have replaced the capacitor anyway since they are cheap.
I have changed the speed switch twice. It the fan only works on high or off. H-H-H-O after the first time and now it is H-O-H-O. Is there something else that affects the speed that I can change or do I need to buy a new ceiling fan at this point?
I have this exact fan pictures in this video. I am replacing the fan controller/receiver. (fan is dead. no response to remote. remote works on other same fan in house. assuming it is the receiver) How do I remove old receiver? From underneath or...? Thanks!
Based on what I saw same steps except you don't cut anything the controller unit has a harness with connector. Theoretically you just order said part it should have a harness end on it then detach controller unit and replace. Even if they're cheap and leave you bare wires you cut as far away from the connector closer to old unit and connect with butt connectors to new unit to harness clip following color coded wiring.

The guy that replaced the switch for me, said he must have put it on backwards, How do I fix it? I'm not sure how it went on in the beginning. Help?
Does that capacitor only regulate the fan motor or does it also affect the light kit? Or are the caps regulating the light kit only in the wireless controller unit at the top?
During a low voltage current while the fan was still running i thought its not a matter of concern but after that when the voltage was normal my fan started moving very much slower, what could be the possible defect with my fan?
if you have a pull chain style fan, turn off the power for the fan then pull the chain several times. If no pull chain and you suspect the capacitor is good then I suggest you watch a few videos on how to discharge safely.

Does that capacitor only regulate the fan motor or does it also affect the light kit? Or are the caps regulating the light kit only in the wireless controller unit at the top?
The capacitor is only for the fan portion.
During a low voltage current while the fan was still running i thought its not a matter of concern but after that when the voltage was normal my fan started moving very much slower, what could be the possible defect with my fan?
please can I use any capacitor I mean in sides
You trip the electricity in the house before dying ask this right? Not just flick the in/off switch for the fan?
superb
Ok so I’ve changed the capacitor but it still runs slow?
How do you discharge electricty stored in the capacitor?
if you have a pull chain style fan, turn off the power for the fan then pull the chain several times. If no pull chain and you suspect the capacitor is good then I suggest you watch a few videos on how to discharge safely.
Good
My remote doesn't have a reset button. It had on and dip written on the remote with numbers 1,2,3,4
Cool thanks!
So if you get a shock from your capacitor , then you know that is not the problem. It must be the 3 speed switch?
Instead of cutting off the old capacitor, what if you just add it to make it two capacitors?
Which fan is
After changing capacitor fan is not working good on Ac supply but it is working good on invetor supply means Dc supply Why
I changed the switch and got only high speed what must I do?
My fan doesn't work when I put the regulator to 2. Otherwise my fan works fine when I keep it in 1, 3, 4 or 5.
Will this work with my floor fan oypla fan floor standing 20"
How long can we run in slow speed??
as long as you want.
I mean only slow speed..and indian local electriton's said that running in slow speed can burn ur fan motor...is that true???
