I think the mom is underrated. She is a hilarious actress and subtly nails the role.

Apart from Susie, Midge’s mother is the scene-stealer.
I think that Midge being extremely privileged is a very significant part of the show, actually. Because we see how hostile the professional entertainment world is to Midge despite all of her advantages, we see how impossible becoming a stand-up comic would be for any woman without those advantages.
I also love Susie's kidnapping in "Simone," bc I think it illustrates the depth of significance of comedy to Susie... we already knew she's had a rough life, and that jokes are both a coping and defense mechanism, but this episode reminds us that as a butch woman in the 50s, jokes are also a survival tactic.
I think that Maisel's privilege leads her to goof up sometimes - like speak of about the black sales girl or in her initial interactions with Susie and that in turn makes her relatable in a way.
I mean idk about relatable per se, but it is realistic, especially considering the time period
I love the way they show you the difference between Susie and Midge without ever making Susie seem weak or less than Midge

I’m not sure if it’s ever fully explored, but her parents are definitely of the *generation* of Jews who very much consciously lived through the Second World War. I think their accents are too fifth avenue to be immigrants fleeing nazis, but they probably had nephews who literally did live in nazi germany and who had someone pointing at the attic.
Think you're missing the point about Midge's kids. They don't figure in much because she isn't that into motherhood. She did it because "that's what you do," like so much else in her life, like moving mountains to get the rabbi. But she's not what you'd call an enthusiastic mother. It's not where her passion lies. She arranges to make sure the job gets done, and then moves on to the stuff that matters to her. And before anyone condemns her for being a "terrible mother," just remember how many father characters barely mention their kids. We shrug off neglectful fathers, like Don Draper. Yes, Midge is a terrible mother, but it's not like those kids aren't taken care of. They have the grandparents, they have the housekeeper, and most importantly, they have a dad that dotes on them.
And speaking of Joel, if you don't understand why Joel would cheat on Midge, you don't understand Joel, or the whole story. Joel's a guy who never feels like he measures up, and he's married to someone who he feels outclasses him. Of course, this is all patriarchal bullshit construct, but it's how he's looking at it. She's talented, driven, and ambitious. He's none of those things. And in her shadow, he feels like a failure, instead of what he is, just a regular guy. He went for Penny because he can impress her. He never impresses Midge. And he's the kind of guy that feels like a woman has to be impressed with a guy to love him.
Joel's flaw is that he can't just be proud with Midge. he can't see her success independently from his mediocrity. That's what he needs to get over to earn her back. He needs to get out of her way, and let her be great, to have the humility to be okay with her being bigger than him.

Man you are right. I think Midge became mother because she was supposed to be after getting married, well the children are always taken care of. Specially in the second and third season children are managed by Joel which kind of bashes the patriarchy. Also Joel didn't have any balls to handle a passionate, intelligent and funny lady like Midge as his wife. Deep downside he always knew she is gonna be better than him in everything and didn't value her or never realised what a gem he has as wife. That's where Benjamin comes in he was surgeon highly intelligent man didn't give a damn about society or what people around him said, wasn't a male chauvinist. He loved all the qualities in Midge and specially her intelligence which Joel was insecure about. Benjamin was much better than Joel in each and every respect. Benjamin even handled break up with all dignity, he was much better than all men out there.
Benjamin was smart, loved and respected all the weirdness and all good qualities Midge had. Benjamin was much balanced man and I always wanted Benjamin and Midge to get together.

@@LibbyRal it's completely up to Midge that she wants to remain single forever and there is nothing wrong of making career her first priority. But Benjamin was a gem. I was like it's completely alright if Midge doesn't want Benjamin or she chooses Joel over him but I want Benjamin give him to me😂😂😂😂
I actually think that the whole situation with the children is amazing. You have to remember at that time in rich households the nanny did always care for the children. The parents were really only there to call them their children and have them achieve when they grew older. They sort of mention this in one of the episodes at the cat scales. Children really were just for appearances and a step in life.

Midge said it herself, her children were pretty much only part of her "three before thirty" plan. I'm not saying she doesn't love them, she is just following the way of life she was thought to live. I was watching a Screenprism video about Sally Draper from Mad Men and how she was the generation of children born privileged and ignored into an upper class family, as Midge's children are, and how this turned them into the first generation of helicopter parents. It's very interesting.

the kid situation in this show is ridiculous in todays view, but it very much does mirror the attitude towards children in the 1950/60s. they were accessories to marriage and nothing more, especially if they had money to outsource care to a nanny.
I'm the same age as the children, Ethan and Ester. My mom was Midge's age. This is how my mom summed it up: Children are like fruit cakes. I never knew I liked them until I made one.
It's kinda like that in parts of the South and Midwest still.
Agree. Parents in the 50s/60s didn't have their lives revolve around their children in the way many parents do now.
With the third season, I think it's becoming increasingly clear why it's important that Midge comes from a privileged background and what it means for the show: At its core, Marvelous Mrs Maisel is about privileged traditional people rejecting that tradition and sacrificing their privilege to gain independence and individuality. It starts with Midge, but continues when her father quits his job, when her mother gives up her trust, even when Sophie Lennon decides she wants to be taken seriously as an actor. All of these characters are risking their comfort to gain a sense of self-respect.
Susie, then, is an exceptionally important character as she represents the foil to this. She shares a one-room apartment between three people and has to fight to gain anything. Without her, the show is just rich people doing stupid things, but with her we understand it's about learning to respect yourself no matter where you are in life and regardless of where you come from.

I'd just like to mention - since most people already talked about how great the main characters are - Astrid, Midge's sister in law. She tries so hard to fit in with the Weissman's jewish culture, when they don't care an inch as much as she does with the holidays and traditions, and their significance. That's even more apparent in season 2. She's the only one in the Catskills that seems to care about that holiday in which they have to fast, she's the only one praying with the rabi and Rose only accompanies her to get her to spill the beans about Noah's job.
I'm really happy she got pregnant!
Just fyi, she was fasting for Tisha B'Av which is not really a holiday. It is one of two fast days that occur in the summer and is one of the only major fast days (25 hours long).
They did my boy Benjamin wrong in the second season

I gotta say I actually love that they don't make a big deal out of her children and that they are just kind of "there". Obviously the character had to have kids because she was married in a certain era so it was expected.
BUT having her as a woman with kids and not a "mother" role is really refreshing. Im really sick of seeing very well rounded female characters being defined by their offspring.
yes! exactly.... the fact that she isn't so involved in parenting...sticks out as an eye sore... because we always expect/shown that women = natural dedicated mothers, who's life revolves around kids.
This show is full of amazing characters but the kicker for me is the New York scene of the 50’s ugh the production design is stunning!
1. I thought it was strange that they showed so little of Midge and Benjamin's courtship and bam they're engaged. They focused more on her and Joel's relationship...which I do think is significant.
2. I think they made it clear that she wasn't going to get married. First, when she saw the painting and the artist talked about not having a family due to focusing on art. Then, listening to Lennie Bruce talk and sing about being forever alone...which obviously caused a reaction.
3. First I had this issue about the kids. Then I thought, that is probably close to how kids were actually raised around that time. I dunno.
Anyway, still love the show. Did think season one was a little better though. ☺
@keiaradise They showed a good bit of her and Joel falling in love in flashbacks, plus Benjamin was supposed to be "different". That does make sense though, just like the situation with the children. Different era. ☺

@keiaradise Yes, but in Episode 9 (I think) they were sexually active EVERY NIGHT- He actually jokingly complained about it. I think they had the hots for each other, but in the end he was more interested in her than she was in him. Don't know how she's going to satisfy that libido of hers gone for 6 months! I don't want to see her sleeping around. And I don't ever want to see her with Lenny Bruce. They should just stay pals and colleagues. BTW- I think it's right on that Joel is going to take the $60k from his father and buy a night club to feature Midge. He already said he thinks its the club scene more than the comedy he digs, and now conveniently has some money and an exit from working for his dad.
Michael Moore I love that Lenny Bruce never took advantage of Midge. I hope that they keep the platonic heterosexual relationship between them.
Ok. I don't think that Midge and the doctor will stay together. When they visited the artist, he said that he had put everything he had into that one special painting, and that's why he couldn't have a family. Midge had that moment after she accepted the tour.

@@nataliehill1472 I believe the same even though I really liked the doctor...His personality was refreshing and the back and forth he did with Midge was always great....But yeah considering the fact that it seems Midge is gonna sleep with her ex husband again..it feels like they won't happen.
I liked the doctor. I'm fine with She accepts the tour he can't deal with that they break up but sleeping with her Ex annoyed me

The parent side of the story is that in the 1950's kids were not the center of the world or the center of their parents world. I know its hard to understand if you were raised by a parent who dotted on you, but for kids raised in this time they were seen but not heard (from). I was told to go outside and play which meant don't come back home until the street lights come on (rain or shine), which today would be called child abandonment. Betty Draper on Madmen was my mother, and was the rule not the exception.
I didn't get raised by my parents. They worked a graveyard shift and we lived in the middle of nowhere, so we spent our days outside until the sun started setting. We were five and seven at the time. CPS would have taken us away if we were children of this age because they NEVER knew where we were, and we wandered EVERYWHERE. The only time we saw our parents on a regular basis was after 6 PM. And then they were gone again at 9. We spent the night with our grandparents until I hit ten and he hit twelve, but it was strictly for sleeping; they wanted nothing to do with rearing us either. So sadly, the child-rearing portion of this show is probably pretty accurate. Hell, at least they had Zelda!
Yeah. My parents were the same. They worked, bought a house, made dinner, washed the clothes but had no conversation with us. Except yelling.

I was raised in the 1950s and I agree with all those who said that the parents just let us be. Once I had a bicycle I went everywhere on it... downtown.... across town... out of town... everywhere. I had to be home for dinner, do the dishes and that was about it. There wasn't as much homework then (or else I just didn't do it) so after watching the Mickey Mouse Club my day was pretty much mine. I walked or rode my bike to school. I never took a bus, ever. There were no in-town school buses, anyway. Really a modern CPS worker would have a fit.....

The actresses that play Susie and the mom are amazing! Also Joel Maisel’s arc is great, going from a loser ex husband to a kind best friend who’s finding his path in life while also being a great dad to their kids when she’s out there performing. And they have great chemistry together.
My dad was raised in the 50's and 60's in a rich Jewish family and letting a nanny or grandparent take care of your kid was just normal back than. It wasn't considered abuse or neglect. It shows how dedicated she is about her career and it's refreshing in the way it shows another flaw of hers. The media today is sending the message that you can be a mother and a career woman, that you can do it all, and Mrs. Maisel shows how hard that is to accomplish. All the characters are funny and quirky, and like you said, the standup itself is spot on and does not disappoint. Also, not every show about an empowered woman has to follow the same equation of a poor or ugly or sexually abused woman who rises to the top. Just like in real life, some people have an advantage like money and some don't. And that causes it's own struggles for her in the way she is ignorant, sheltered, tends to put her foot in her mouth and forgetful of her children.
About effing time!! This show is so damn good, I had to limit myself to 2 episodes a night so I could truly savor it.
Also, season 2 was way superior, and not just for thicc daddy Zachary Levi playing Benjamin. Perfect casting, and I'm still salty about how Midge did him dirty.
And honestly, us barely seeing the children is very realistic for this time period and this family's social status. The kids were raised by the nannies and maids, and then shipped off to boarding school. "Children should be seen and not heard" had to originate somewhere🤷🏿♀️

I love that they make her not perfect. She is constantly having to find her way in the real world, rather than floating around in this fantasy world she is used to. One of my favorite characters ever. And I actually really liked season 2.
Just my opinion but I love season 2 more. The pace is taken up a whole other level. The settings are more fun and energetic. The interplay between multiple character with a one shot (my favorite part of the show) is increased. And Zachary Levi adds a lot of life to an already alive show.
Season 3 is even better, which I didn't think would be possible, but just you wait

Tony Shalhoub is amazing. His portrayal of Abe in Paris throwing a fit one night and the next scene he's wearing a beret and chatting in a cafe was glorious. Plus his exercise routine at Steiner's.

Maisel is impossible to root against as a character because she lives her life to be accepted by all around her, only to be rejected by her husband, her parents, and her society. This is merely the inciting incident for her to to find her voice and speak her truth on the stage.

If you like Homecoming, you should check out Mr Robot. It’s written by the same writer and it’s one of the most interesting shows on television
Wendla Bergman I love season 1 on Mr. Robot, but I feel like it becomes a little too trippy and confusing for me on season 2

Question that involves a SPOILER:
I thought it was implied that she gives up Benjamin, first during the closet scene with Abe and then later when she tells Joel something along the lines of, "You'd be surprised how much you can throw away in a 5-minute phone conversation." Did I misinterpret this?

I can see the resemblance but I think Christine is too classy to play Joan (and I love Joan).
Midge not really putting interest into her kids and them never being around unless it's plot convenience is kind of the point. That goes back to the whole "what if i wasn't supposed to be a mother?" thing from the first season.
The second season was not the typical "sophomore season" at all. It was just as brilliant but in a more extended way. In order for you to get to know Mrs Maisel, you need to get to know her family and background better and that is what Season 2 did. This show is AMAZING
Alex Borstein was on Gilmore girls as a harp player at the inn. She is also Lois on family Guy and was in the Lizzie Maguire movie as I think her name was Ungermyer
now that season 3 is out, season 2 is hands down my favorite. I died when the mom got a dog, when Susie bonded with her kidnappers, midge recorded Susie snoring, and Abe's work-out onesie. Season 2 for the win!
I've been a fan since the second the show dropped and ppl are really sleeping on Mrs Maisel !!!!! It's probably the funniest show out right now and ppl just aren't watching it because people forget that Amazon does things other than ship packages lmao. I think what the show does well is something that the Palladino's really push, and that it's comedy dies slow. Like Gilmore Girls, Maisel is about a woman who talks mad fast and it keeps the pace moving and everything just ten times funnier. This is definitely a show to keep watching and it's one of my all time favorites.

This show is similar to 30 Rock. Award-winning and too smart for mainstream.
The show is a big hit, won a lot of awards, and has been all over the press. I don’t know what makes you think it’s being ignored. Rachel Brosnahan just hosted SNL this week and they did a sketch spoof of Maisel, which they wouldn’t have done if they didn’t think ppl wd recognize the show.
Personally, I hope season 3 is the last one. I don't want this to die on the vine by inserting a lot of filler. I'm having trouble figuring out what will happen next year already- a 6 month tour? Will there be stage romances? travel problems? I think they could do justice to the remainder of her career development and figure out her personal future in 8-10 episodes. Don't get me wrong- I LOVE this show!! But I want to feel fondly about it forever, like a great book. Plus, these months and months between seasons is agony!!
Mozart In The Jungle is amazing!! (First tv show I watched on amazon). Great music, great plot, great characters!! Just got canceled, but it has 4 seasons and I really do think it’s worth watching!!!!!!

This is maybe my favorite show of all time. Rachel Brosnahan and the guy that plays her dad are stupendous actors- I haven't seen acting that good in a TV show in ages. And I love how the comedy is actually funny and witty as hell.

I finished season 2 last night and omg I was so upset. It’s such a good show and I can’t wait for season 3!
I prefer Amazon to Netflix, because while they do co-fund other networks shows for (nornally) exclusive broadcasting rights outside the US, they have way better production value. Netflix's contribution is Riverdale and the Good Place (I love them both but Riverdale isn't exactly high art). Meanwhile Amazon helps produce historical epics like Outlander and Vikings alongside comedy and fantasy like Mrs Maisel and Good Omens (which better be good).
Emma Jenkins you can’t reduce netflix to riverdale? yes i agree when netflix does shows badly they do them REALLY badly (see riverdale, 13 reasons why, insatiable) but in return they have also produced some of the BEST shows in recent years (see stranger things, daredevil, the oa etc.)

Midge not thinking about the kids when she agreed to go on tour with Shy is the whole point of season 2! She literally thinks about nothing but her career before accepting the opportunity. Also, in that time period it's highly normal that the kids are an afterthought, left with the parents, decisions are made without worrying about them at all. Season 2 is about Midge trying to have her cake and eating it too and slowly realizing that she cannot straddle both worlds. She has to give up The Catskills, her marriage and the hope of a new marriage with Benjamin, the very idea of being a good wife and good mother a good daughter a good practicing Jewish person; she tries to hold on to all of that and still try to be successful in comedy and it doesn't work. She has to sacrifice everything in order to have a career in comedy and that's the choice she makes at the end of the final episode.
On that note.. another FUN year long wait for season 3 😊 happy holidays!
I personally smell a love triangle. I really hope it doesn't happen, but I'm pretty sure it will. But I still adore this show!!!!
If you really think about all the different plot threads for all the different characters in season 2, they actually cover a LOT of ground. Some things may have felt a little slow, but they did an excellent job on getting through some of the slower character development that needs to happen to set things up to keep moving in the third season. I haven't had time to start it yet, but I'm so excited for it! Love to see this gem of a show getting more attention.
I actually liked the painting scene the way it was. It was kinda Lovecraftian, I was both scared and amazed by a painting I never saw.
Susie was going to play the Sookie in Gilmore Girls

Susie also played a harpist in in an early episode (I think the pilot). It was a very small part but that actress made her very mermorable.
Also she is married to Jackson from Gilmore Girls
She is Sookie in the original pilot (the one with different Dean), and in the actual series she was Drella, Ms Celine and the Great Grandma Lorelai.

Now that Maisel has ended i would love to hear your final thoughts, especially on the topics of Mr. Maisel and the eventual evolution of the children. During the final season after the Abe talked about the father ‘not speaking to the son for the first x years’ and then the little girl turning out to be the genius it occurred to me Ms. Maisel seemed to accidentally follow that rule with her own daughter always being to busy attempting to support them while simultaneously trying to pick her career up and further it and thought it was ironically funny like a small nod to the audience plot point they just didn’t bother pointing out.
That moment when you are watching the show and laughing out loud cuz Susie is carrying a plunger around, to then found she named it Pamela like me. I died 😂😂😂
The thing with the kids I can clearly see where you're coming from and I honestly felt the same sometimes I would literally be talking to the TV going "what about the kids" but the thing in contextually the way they treat the children is accurate to their social setting as well as the era it's set in. I don't believe we'll be seeing a lot of the children unless we see them grow up or something. I mean you can clearly see the era affecting the way they talk about the baby girl because they only talk about her appearance. It's strange for a modern audience to see children be treated like this by their family, yes, and we all expected them to play a bigger role in Midge's life,yes. However this just isn't true to the era and social setting she is in.
I just watched the final season last episode 😢 sad that it's over but happy it happened! I have never loved and waited for a show more than this one..i am gonna miss it

I really enjoyed the creativity of the painting scene- it gives the viewer the opportunity to create something vast within their own minds, because art (speaking of painting particularly as a focus) is so diverse and (though art can be objectively analyzed) subjective: that they could never create what the dialogue generated. I think it was a clever cinematic tool that bolstered the scene.

I worked on the Marvelous Season 3 a lot for background and the bits I've seen of the plot are bomb!
You're right about the 'meh' of season 2. Hopefully by now you've been charmed by season 3. It's a gem. I'm holding off on the last half of the last episode because I just dont' want it to end. There's also a small, powerful performance from Jason Alexander. I had no idea he could wrench your heart like that. AND, start binging Bosch.

I actually liked the second season more than the first too. I cant even say I have a favourite character, they're all flawed and weird and I'm addicted to them. Cant wait for a new season!!

There's no rule that characters have to verbalise their every thought. Plus there is actually a father in the picture, and a perfectly loving father at that. He could look after them.
Maisel's outfit and her way of talking is what makes me into this show
Honestly this could be this best of the best. Simply amazing
What a masterpiece of contemporary American television. Not since Breaking Bad has it risen to such virtuosity.. on all levels. Bringing the late fifties to life with such extraordinary production and authenticity. Resurrecting Lenny Bruce, the NY club and Catskills scene. How about that gorgeous 1957 Plymouth Belvedere convertible in season two, Midge hanging her head out of it in boredom and her quip about radio being the new opiate of the masses? And that incredible fleet of other classic cars gracing virtually every exterior scene? Then, that hilarious sous entendu of the shrink offering a card to Midge citing Sylvia Plath as the shrink's client! So much to relish and admire in this tour de force production.
I love the show. Recently binged it. Can't wait till season 3.
Btw the 2nd season is way better than the 1st not saying the 1st isn’t good. Both are awesome.

I binged the first season last year in one day and I still low key am denying that I did bc it's too precious to binge for meeeee. this second one was like holy shit gonna savour every second and frame. CANT WAIT FOR THE THIRD.

I have a confession to make. I only watched season one of the show because it was approaching 9:00 at night and was looking for something boring to help put me to sleep. Reading the title, I assumed I found just the right show. I was so enthralled with the first episode, I played the next episode then the next. Sometime later, I tried to play the next episode and found I had reached the end of season one. Shocked, I looked at the time and it was 5:45 in the morning. I can’t wait for season three!
Sam Esmail is a genius. Mr Robot is something you have got to binge. And this is GOLD!
