HIGH ABOVE DAWSON PASS TRAIL IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK: SUMMITING FLINSCH PEAK AND MOUNT HELEN

  • Dawson Pass Trail in the Two Medicine Valley area of Glacier National Park, is by far the most scenic section of the Two Medicine Valley. Dawson Pass is the saddle between the iconic Flinsch Peak and Mount Helen. Dawson Pass in-itself is an incredible feat but adding Flinsch Peak and/or Helen Peak will blow your mind. Dawson Pass is most likely the best hike in Two Medicine Valley and should rank high as the best in all of Glacier. After a relatively easy climb to Flinsch Peak or Mount Helen, a sea of peaks are visible in all directions. Flinsch Peak has some class 3 with a pinch of 4 sprinkled in for some extra fun. Helen Peak is a nice class 2 walk up from Dawson Pass. Most people stop at Dawson Pass or continue on as a loop to Pitamakan Trail and then back to Two Medicine Lake. Adding either Flinsch or Helen to this already big day is tough but well worth the solitude you will find while looking in amazement at Glacier National Park's highest mountain tops.

    Man, you pick the tougher ones for sure. Never went to Glacier, worked at Yellowstone, and every time we thought about it we said it is an eight-hour drive, nope. And we were in Yellowstone. I love these ferries on the big lakes. Chelan to Steinkein is cool one long trip so spend the night.

    You would love Moab Man. You park above 10000 feet, then go up. The forests are amazing. You can do Gold Basin in the winter. But need a 4x4 to get to the parking lot. Snow Shoes Gaiters MSR Lightening IIs with heel elevators. Summer is more fun. Go up backside camp at Medicine Lake. Front side Moab side will work for five peak runs. I like backside better.

    I am watching video's trying to figure out next years hikes.
    You did a great job showing this trail. It is going way up on my list, but I am still looking for a 50ish mile loop.
    Awesome job!

    Okay, this is where I am going. You convinced me. Gonna do it and go to GLacier which is closer than Yellowstone anyway. West Side. East Nope. Not going to the top though.

      Yes sir! You should be able to search me on AllTrails. If you can’t find me let me know and I could probably send it to you👍🏼. It’s probably not on AllTrails as Flinch is not an official trail. I made my own route up there.

    Was getting down more difficult than the climb up?

    • @TheMountainMatt
      @TheMountainMatt  9 місяців тому

      Most of the time the climb down reveals itself a little better than the climb up ….. most of the time. That down climb in particular was fairly easy 👍🏼

  • @greatestshow99
    @greatestshow99 11 місяців тому +1

    Another fantastic video! 👏😍 So how does Flinsch compare with Siyeh? (the views, the difficulty level of the climb, route finding etc)
    That final climb to the summit looks way too sketchy for me... if you were to fall, it's pretty much death or many, many hours before you could get medical treatment... 😬 I'm guessing the camera mount makes the climb look worse than it actually is? Always very impressed with you and your son (and wife making it up Disappointment Peak in the Tetons) 👏😲🙌
    I've done Oberlin twice (wasn't that your girls' first true summit?) and Swiftcurrent Mountain (Lookout) last summer. I'm still hopeful of summiting Siyeh one day, but not sure if I'll ever get up there (and back down safely). Looking at the final climb on Flinsch... It's one thing to climb up that, but coming back down, when you can't see the foot and hand holds... 😳 I'm impressed, sir!
    Not sure about Siyeh, but just added Helen to my bucket list. I did some homework on it after watching this and saw that Upper Two Medicine Lake is directly below and visible from the summit of Helen. The views are simply spectacular, as you can tell from the ladies' reaction!
    Look like the hike up Helen is similar to the spur trail up to Grinnell Glacier Overlook, but not as steep? We just did the entire Dawson-Pitamakan Loop last July, and went right past Mt. Helen on our way down; I knew nothing of it.
    **We did the D-P Loop counterclockwise and missed the last boat by an hour and a half, getting back to our car just before dark. So we didn't have time last year anyway. But if we started with the boat, we could probably do the whole loop AND Helen in a day. Thanks for the inspiration!
    Be safe out there, and keep doing what you do! Love your channel!

    • @TheMountainMatt
      @TheMountainMatt  11 місяців тому +1

      Now that I think about it Oberlin was the first true summit for the girls😄! I guess I was there to enjoy it 🤣 thanks for pointing that out 👍🏼.
      Siyeh is much more difficult than Flinsch. Flinsch only has that top section that is class 3 and 4. There are lots a great hand and foot holds going up. Siyeh on the other hand was more class 4. When we met Dan going up, he mentioned that it was easier farther east where we went up. I think you could go up the trail farther towards Siyeh Pass and then head up Siyeh from there. I'm not sure about it but Dan made it sound like it might be easier. Although, that would add a few more miles to your day.
      Yes, I would say that Grinnell Overlook and Helen would be similar, class 2 walk up👍🏼. Helen is a sneaky good peak just sitting in plain sight.
      All those peaks are great day hikes to go after! Some of the best I've seen to date! Keep going after those views! Cheers!

      So just curious how you would rank Siyeh, Flinsch, and Disappointment Peak --different parks, I know-- on views and difficulty?
      Believe you had said previously that Siyeh and Disappointment Peak were your top two ever. Is that still true?

    • @TheMountainMatt
      @TheMountainMatt  11 місяців тому +1

      @@greatestshow99 o man! They’re all incredible in their own way. I would have to say Siyeh, Disappointment, Flinsch. Disappointment being the hardest to get to due to route finding and a very sketchy section just above Amphitheater Lake. Siyeh is difficult as well but more of a schlog. Not as much route finding on Siyeh. I believe you can get my exact route I took by downloading it from my AllTrails account. After the last 12 months of adventures I’ll have to reorder my favorites just a bit. Black Peak in Washington and a few others definitely shuffle the order a bit. Videos coming in the near future.

    • @greatestshow99
      @greatestshow99 11 місяців тому +1

      I'll look forward to your Black Peak upload... North Cascades NP imo is the most underrated and unknown of all the national parks. Mind blowing views if you're willing to walk way up! 🤯😲😍 Not sure when you were in the Cascades, but we were just at Rainy Lake on June 28th, a month ago today. Wanted to do the Maple Pass Loop that day, but no one else wanted to get back to Seattle at midnight before our 9 a.m. flight home (we only had a day in the park after driving all over Washington and Oregon). Guessing you started your climb out of the Rainy Pass parking area and did at least a portion of the Maple Pass Loop? Small world; I guess great minds think alike. 😉 Have you done Sahale Arm/Glacier Camp yet? Four thousand feet up --but no climbing/scrambling-- seems like your type of hike 👍😉 I definitely hope to get back to the Cascades to complete those two hikes and the Skyline Trail at Mt Rainier (did only part of it last month due to snow).
      Also going to Yellowstone and the Tetons for a week next July (for the first time since 1990). Delta Lake is number one on my list... No Disappointment Peak for me. Amazing, but that one made me nervous just watching! 👀😳😲🙌

      Actually heading back to Washington in a few days for a week and then back out again the last week of August, can't wait!
      Yes, we started at Rainy Pass Trailhead for Black Peak and went up and past Ann Lake. And yes, Sahale and a few others are on the docket for the end of August! We have a big two months left of adventures, should be amazing!
      Delta Lake is incredible. Also, Paintbrush Canyon and Cascade Canyon Loop is a must. I would start that from Cascade Canyon if you decide on that. Lake of the Crags is a Delta Lake style place and will have much less people.

      It was busy but nothing like Many Glacier, Saint Mary's and Lake McDonald areas. Even the East Glacier Lodge had rooms available. If was nice to get away from the crowds.
