Fantastic!! Great shooting. Love seeing the 'old fashioned' dated cars whizzing past too. Car design has come a long way since 1995, but that A4 design is timeless!
I was on the trip and the stop watch brigade agreed on 98 max. Footplate inspector told us driver was asked to ease down when cab speedo read 100. An amazing run.
A grand old lady stretching her legs. Near the ton or not; she's blowing the doors off everything in sight. One of my top five train videos. The pacing is fantastic.
First time I have seen this, absolutely brilliant. We all know the limit is 75mph but this beauty is well and truly above the official limit. Great video 5* no question. I also remember the occasion when the West Country loco was being filmed between Salisbury and Yeovil (if I remember correctly) and it left the diesel standing much to the amusement of the film crew!!
Bloody hell what a great one this is If I hadn't see it for myself I'd have never believed it. Hope the side-rods stayed on when this was all over :) She must be in terrific shape to run her that long at that speed! Great stuff thanks so much for posting!
Fastest I've heard of recorded in preservation was a West Country touching 89...I won't say which one to stop the Happy Police putting a stop to it! Epic vid, by the way...
What an unbelievable skillful piece of driving THAT was. How on earth did you manage to run alongside her for 6-7 minutes on a busy motorway?? This would have to be one of the best steam videos of all time
I was on this train and if you think she was going fast, you’re right. On the run down from Whiteball summit to Taunton the speedo in then cab read 100. On board timers reckoned 98 by their stop watches. Drivers last day so he went out in style.
I can confirm exactly what you said as I was the support crew member on the footplate. It was a VERY fitting last mainline steam trip for the driver Trevor Barnett.
Wow. Two ex colleagues were on the footplate (the Inspector and Operations Manager) and I never realised there was "evidence" of THAT run!! Brilliant!!
There were five people in the cab, the owner, the driver, fireman, operations manager who was acting as the inspector and was doing the firing....and myself as part of the support crew.
Actually Jules you were in the tender corridor!!! There were, however, three of us firing.....! One day perhaps we can share a beer and remember that great occasion, probably the high point of my railway career. To paraphrase the great Driver Duddington of Mallard fame, "the world certainly flew by" that day!
Excelent capture! It`s interesting in that times the trains ran very fast, but nowadays they are moving slower... slower... Anyway, very good railfan capture!
Top marks for a top video! I'm not going to enter the speed debate except to say the crew were sure as hell letting her 'have her head'. I'd guess it was somewhat over 75 mph towards the end of the video but the bottom line is that none of us can accurately tell what pace she was doing. The crew would know but I bet their not telling!! Thanks again for the video.
Notice the smoke/steam lifting well away from the engine, when the A4s were being designed they used a clay model for wind tunnel tests, Smoke drifted down to the cab area, someone whilst placing the model into the wind tunnel made a big thumb impression just behind the chimney, The result being the smoke lifted upwards, so all A4s had a dimple behind the funnel, all because of a mistake
Thanks for posting this beeman37. An A4 doing wat it was built to do. Without getting anyone into trouble, I'd love to know what the actual speed was. I suppose if you know the distance between two points it would be easy to calculate to within 1-2 mph. Great piece of film, I love it!
I made it on Google Maps, after find the M5, looking for a parallel railway, and find it, almost 13 miles long near the road, the rest is a simple equation=Results: aproximately 96mph
If enough people want to know what really happened that day, I guess it's possibly time to tell. I was the Operations manager on the footplate and its probably time to set the record straight....and yes we went very fast!
Definitely one of the best videos I've seen in a long time. I'm adding this to my favorites and some other playlists also. Fabulous job! How fast was this train going? What is the speed limit on the M5, and did you need to exceed it to keep up with this train?
@edj66 Sorry but I cannot remember the year for the one I refer to. I think it was for a TV production (possibly) in the late 90s or a monthly steam video production. If anyone can remember it would be appreciated. Regards Dave
I keep coming back to this video and thinking to myself ... it is quiet and strong. What do you feed it? Carbon and water. So, what does it spew out, into the atmosphere? Carbon and water. It is with this thought in mind, that I ask you... Are we actually making technical advances? Or , perhaps still painting ourselves into the very same corner , just using a less labor intensive... yet, more toxic paint (so to speak) ?
calculations based on timing wheel turns or distances are completely worthless as they assume accurate running speed of the camera, which is itself unlikely given that it must be an older model since the film is not in HD. I would rather believe the evidence of those who were there.
I've had a go at calculating this and I cannot get more than about 75mph for 60009. Very roughly I'm getting 19 seconds for 100 revolutions of the driving wheels. We know the diameter is 80 inches and circumference therefore 80 x pi. Speed in mph therefore is 80 x pi x 100 x 3600 / 19 x 12 x 5280 = about 75. This of course in no way detracts from the video and I stand by my earlier comments.
Where this section was filmed we were doing about 75 or so mph. I went onto the footplate before we entered Whiteball tunnel which we enetered doing about 73mph. We came out like a bullet from a gun and kept accelerating until that much talked about figure was reached!!! I know because I WAS there ;-)
almost 100mph.....my car barely goes faster than that flat out 60009 looks like she's reading the morning newspaper and having her morning joe while pulling all of that

Excellent to see an A4 going at the sort of speed it was designed for. Probably could do a lot more too!
Fantastic!! Great shooting. Love seeing the 'old fashioned' dated cars whizzing past too. Car design has come a long way since 1995, but that A4 design is timeless!

That is hard effing core!
Very nice with the camera, and I wonder what the passengers were thinking? "BIt fast, this, eh?"
WHAT a piece of filming! And what a beautiful piece of machinery. Fantastic video, one of the best railway videos I've ever seen!
What a bloody marvelous machine!

Some grate shots there. I love seeing these A4 doing what they were built to do. They seem to look so much better when there doing 75mph.
I can hardly imagine the thrill of actually filming this the way you did. Must have been a totally awesome experience. Thanks so much for posting.
I don't care how fast it goes! What an epic ride, wish I had been along!
Congratulations on a great video, and thanks for sharing!
fabulous film and a favourite. such a sensation of speed and with so little apparent effort!
Erm yeah... quite fast that... Stunning.
She sure runs smooth and clean, like a boiler on a magic carpet. Almost whisper quiet compared to a big noisy thumping EMD.
fantastic footage and good speed control to keep exact pace after flyovers etc, brilliant stuff !
Fastest I've heard of recorded in preservation was a West Country touching 89...I won't say which one to stop the Happy Police putting a stop to it! Epic vid, by the way...
That has to be my favourite video in ages

Yes it was a bit quick, like Jules, I know....I was there!
I think the camera man might be exceeding the speed limit a tad Ha ha. Great video great locomotive

@@ieuandavies4134 How come you ended up going so speedily? Were you late? Or just keen?

Wow, as suggested in the description that looked to be in excess of 90mph in places

WOW ! What a piece of pacing from the camera car. MANY THANKS FOR THAT , AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK , BUT DON'T GET DONE FOR SPEEDING !
Superb....

@beeman37. I know two of the men who were on the footplate. The speedo briefly showed 102.
Indeed you do John and yes it was quite a trip!
@paullubliner Sure. But I doubt that we can get an acceleration from 75 to 100 followed by a deceleration back down to 75 mph in 10-15 seconds
that's a good ton up on my Guzzi
EXCITING !!!
I'm more shocked by the fact I saw both a Mercedes SEC and a Bentley Contential/Turbo on the same road
I'm glad speed cameras hadn't been invented there yet.
She is flying boi how fast was she going like
Fast enough mate!
Trains must follow the highway code, mirror, signal, manoeuvre and pass slower traffic on the right.
woah!
This might solve everyone's problems, if someone could figure out how long the white lines are, then the speed could be more accurately measured
and as you look over to our left you see the courthouse ther it goes.
