      Since you mentioned Discovery, I’m interested in your take on psychology and mental illness in the first season.

      OCPD and the perfectionism resulting from abuse, please?
      I don't have this diagnosis myself (related diagnoses would be OCD [older, under control] and BPD [misdiagnosis?]) but I'm very much a perfectionist and at times have been very competitive and haven't taken losing very well. I've been trying to get rid of the "I must be perfect/the best or might as well not try at all" mentality but it isn't easy, even when I'm a complete failure (which I am). Also agoraphobic and haven't left my flat too often in the past year or two, not alone at least. You wouldn't either if you had my face. Maybe it's BDD? Maybe she's born with it?

    Another awesome video. that concept where addiction is filling a void is so powerful. Also, understanding the breadth of addiction and understanding that there is initial gratification that leads to hardship in the future is so true. Love this!

    This was a really great episode, would love to see the themes touched on here explored further, especially about how addiction/obsession is your body's way of compensating for a lack of something e.g. social company

    Can you make a video about how to help someone with an addiction?
    My dad is an alcoholic and he knows he has a problem but he doesn't want to get therapy. I don't know why. He did argue with his doctor because she said that he can't get clean without therapy and now it's even worse... He doesn't like it when someone tells him what he should do but he should really STOP drinking alcohol because it changes his personality

      Great suggestion! I've got a sense of what I'd say for that video. I'll add this to my list!

    How rewarding is the career of a psychologist? I have been considering studying psichology but I am afraid I might be better off trying to become a psychiatrist, but that would mean I'd need to first go to medical school (that's how it works in my country). I don't want to waste time in subjects that don't fascinate me as much as mental illnesses and how the mind works just to find out a career in psychology could have been just as financially and emotionally fullfiling as one in psychiatry.
    If it helps to answer the question, I was attracted to this field because I want to work helping people overcome their problems and I have always found the way we behave and the mind works to be one of my favorite things to learn about.

      @drali  6 років тому

      Financially, you are much more likely to earn more income from psychiatry than from psychology. But from a fulfillment perspective, I get a great deal of meaning from my work. It is a challenge, which is why I have to be very careful about self-care and preventing burnout (ua-cam.com/video/IbDqFfvHdL4/v-deo.html) because it can be a tough job, but I often feel like I am doing important work. My psychiatry colleagues also speak of the great deal of purpose they experience in relation to their work.

    Okay but the next episode of Voyager in that screenshot is “Timeless,” which is the best of them all.

    • @drali
      @drali  6 років тому

      I'm in the middle of a complete Star Trek franchise rewatch right now. My order has been weird though - I did Deep Space Nine, then The Next Generation, and now I'm on Voyager (then Enterprise and The Original Series). Timeless *is* the next episode in my rewatch! I'm pretty excited. I haven't watched Voyager since it aired so rewatching now is almost like watching it again for the first time. Do you have any favorite Voyager episodes (besides "Timeless")?

    • @cnroth
      @cnroth 6 років тому +2

      The Psych Show - Any episode that has meat relating to mental health, really. ‘The Chute’ and its discourse on how incarceration perpetuates cycles of trauma, anger, and violence; ‘The Raven’ and the emergence of childhood trauma in adulthood; ‘Extreme Risk’ and survivor’s guilt/self-injury; ‘Pathfinder’ and FINALLY vindicating the strengths that can come from within Reg Barclay’s anxiety and addiction. But probably the most personal for me is ‘Night.’ As a kid, seeing my hero struggle with depression- and just a year after the onset of my first depressive episode- was huge. Beyond that, it was important to see Janeway being saved by the support of around her, rather than having overcome her depression by force of will. It still speaks to me today. What about you (so far)?

    • @drali
      @drali  6 років тому +1

      I'm a sucker for episodes that focus on an individual character's psychology, questions about what it means to be a human, social commentary, and then also silly fun. I'm halfway through season 5 right now but so far some of my favorites include: "Prototype", "Tuvix", "Unity", "Distant Origin", and "Living Witness".

    • @cnroth
      @cnroth 6 років тому +1

      The Psych Show “Living Witness” is, in my opinion, one of the best episodes in all of Trek.

      Now I'm on season 6. I *really* loved "Course: Oblivion". There's a lot there about memory and identity. I also love how it tied to the past episode about the Demon planet. Last night I watched "Pathfinder" which was a ton of fun!

    Why we start feeling alone all of a sudden and happy in the next sec ??
    I mean I m too moodholic and faces issues while conversating also.
    So how to get rid of this thing??

    • @drali
      @drali  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for your comment. Feeling alone in one moment and happy in the next could be due to A LOT of situational and personal factors. It could also be related to anxiety or mood related issues.

    How much do you know about different mental illnesses?

    • @drali
      @drali  6 років тому +5

      A lot more than the average person. It’s the primary thing I studied in grad school. Compared to other psychologists, I tend to know more about anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and hair-pulling/skin-picking as those are my area of expertise. This is where I see a lot of addictions, in their interaction with anxiety disorders. I tend to have less experience with eating disorders compared to other psychologists.

      How much have you looked into developmental disorders such as ADHD?

    • @drali
      @drali  6 років тому +3

      I work primarily with teens and young adults, so developmental disorders come up all the time for me. I also work with a lot of people who have ADHD, particularly ADHD and social anxiety.

      Omg.... Reading addiction same.. I've been trying to find if its real.. and people keep saying nah its not even real its not harmful, but as someone who can complete 3 books a day n can't do anything productive without reading... I think its really bad...
      I've gotten to the point where even seeing book titles n new books give me an anxiety attack if i don't read them....
      N yet people are still like eh its not real reading is productive blah2
      Ik ur comment is from years ago n u probably won't see this but I'm glad I'm not the only one struggling with book addiction
