  • Welcome to Episode 9 of Station Feature! Today I am at Newquay at the end of the Atlantic Coast Line where I do a tour around the 1 platform station looking at things of interest. A lot of history behind this station as well as a very interesting interview with Kieran from South West Trainspotting who has this station as his local one. I hope you all enjoy!
The thumbnail features Green 153372 but I filmed 153325 leaving as I took the photo at a later date.

Very nice to see this LIVE report of the current state of Newquay Station (the pillars could do with a coat of pint!) I believe when the new station was built in the early C20th it had 3-platforms & was very busy until Beeching. The old tramway was worth preserving as it goes back to Treffry’s construction who had a mineral tramway to Newquay harbour from 1849, connecting mines (Newlyn East) + the china clay pits around St Dennis, steam engines brought in the ores to NQY RS, and were then pulled down by horse-drawn trams to the top of the harbour. Then lowered to the harbour by 2 stationary engines in an area called The Whim. I think the old tunnel entrances can be seen under the cliffs in the harbour. I see how some of the trains are very over-stuffed at peak times - no fun! 👍

Certainly is a long platform, though that platform should probably be brought back into use

I agree, would take a lot of work and preparation, that line isn't easy to double track.

I know but I think soon they will be adding the class 800 trains to be in the Newquay branch line

Great interview with Kieran (was it a school day as he had his school uniform on) the services are poor no early trains which must be a pain for Kieran to catch up with you and the rest of the gang for some spotting. That platform was a long one.

Thanks Brian, yes it was as there were a few bad weather issues prior to this so i couldn't do Newquay on the weekend before.

Wait a second there's been like 4 interviews with the SAME person!? I thought you'd pick different people, people who live there.

Not necessarily, the two people know a lot about the county of Cornwall and have paid visits to these places before. I can't guarantee a local for every station.

      Fair enough.

I remember well, arriving here back on the mid 70's from Birmingham New Street Station where a Peak was the traction there but I can't remember whether it was a class 45 or a class 46, the engine was changed at Plymouth but I don't remember to what, back them it was probably a Western?....there was 3 full tracks in use then and it was a busy station receiving full inter regional expresses from all over the country which explains the excessive length of the platforms.

I reckon they could use that other side of platform again I know it will be a lot of work but they could do it

Just to say, if you didn't notice there is a ASDA right next to it as well
