I grew up in Stockton, needless to say, the gang violence is unavoidable no matter where you live or how much you try to stay away from it. My friends and I had a check list of things to go through before we decided to go to parties in high school, where’s the house, what schools are going, who’s throwing it, etc. all in a futile effort to avoid one of the many parties that end in gun fire. I lost a friend to gang violence as well, he was only 18. All I know is I will not be raising my future children there because it really isn’t safe.

I was born and raised in Stockton. My sister was a victim of violent crime in 1980. She lived at home with 24/7 care and finally passed away in 2008 due to the semi coma she was left in. I finally made it out of "Stuck town", as we all called it. Now I literally live as far away as I could get. I feel much safer with my kids. I pray for that City all the time. It left permanent scars on me and my family.
I lived in Stockton for 10 years , I was never part of a gang , I had no parents or family members, I was own my owner I never own a gun . I am 48 I have never been to jail I have no criminal record. I grew up in a very tough hood by Hammer lane downtown area Delta college, I lost lots of classmates who was part of gangs their all get killed. I left stockton it's been almost 10 years. I have good memories of stockton city back in the days. I was always depressed when I used live there, was not jobs, it was a tough place to survive. I was never involved in the crime , I choose a different hardscape for my own. God bless all the families from Stockton city.
Ask the MS-13 members who get deported back to El Salvador. They didn’t seem to mind embracing the L.A. gang culture...or you could do a little more research into the existence of gangs. You’re on this video and clearly interested enough to ask questions. Don’t be lazy.
They about it too. In high school I met a couple hmong peeps that were war refugees. Besides a few society differences they know what's up n ready to put in work. The difference between the hood and a war torn country? Is land mines and f-16s. BELIEVE THAT
ITS A CHOICE! I've lived here my entire life and I've never assimilated to the culture that exists in this city. Stop perpetuating the stereotype and get educated so that gangs aren't your "only option"
I grew up in Stockton too. I joined a gang at 14. Yea it was a choice. A choice kids make when they have no guidance and feel they have no other options. A choice I made cuz my dad wasn't around, my mom was partying and in and out of the hospital, and the other kids in my neighborhood became like family to me. You think a 13 year old who feels like nobody in the world cares about him but his homies is going to think "let me focus on my education". No. You obviously didn't go through what we went through so don't speak on it.
I moved there when my oldest son was going into 2nd grade. I was warned by a fellow back to school shopper, not to pick the gang colors for my child’s shirts. Eventually, I got my family out of there. Really bad place.
I wandered into Stockton looking for my best friend who just got out of prison never having had been there before and it was wild, found him under the bridge near the train yard, the tweaker king down there was actually a very nice guy, helped me go through everywhere trying to find him
Im 12 right now, i lived in stockton until i was 8, i still go there sometimes, i live with my mom in reno nevada, but my dad i visit and he still lives in stockton. I went to westwood elementary for preschool and then i moved, then i went to manlio silva until i was in 2nd grade and then i moved to reno. To some people they hate it, i still miss it cuz i had friends, i was popular, now i get bullied everyday at school here.

Hi Chicago Street, thanks for checking out the doc. If you'd like to see the first one we did on Stockton, you can find it here: on.abc10.com/OurHistoryOfViolence
Stockton was hit with the highest foreclosures in U.S. in 2008 that's fact. Great documentary do more of this hopefully the meth epidemic in Fresno Ca?
I’ve lived in Stockton all my life, 47 yrs. this is a positive story and I’m happy to hear about this program. But I see so many youngsters out here with automatic rifles and hand guns with extended clips. I’m talking about big drums attached to their guns. They don’t hide it they’re all over the internet exposing themselves yet I hear of no big gun busts. These guns, clips, and drums aren’t even legal in California so how are these kids getting ahold of them. They’re killing each other over nothing. I thought it was bad in the 80s n 90s but I think it’s just gotten worse. And to say only 15 % of families are single mother homes sounds awfully low to me. Most of Stockton is ghettos and majority of the families are single moms. The men usually have multiple baby mamas and no home of their own. Let’s keep it real. It’s nice to see people like this man featured that got straight, but that’s rare. My husband is also a success story. A firmer gang member with multiple prison terms. He’s hasn’t caught a case in 10 yrs and lives an honest hard working life today. But the father of my kid’s, he’s still on the streets, in n out of jail and has no relationship with my kids. And sadly, that’s more the norm then these success stories. This is a depressing place to live, and a hard place to get out of.
Born and raised in Stockton and gang members come in all races. Honestly it's a shame to see how bad Stockton is I used to be able to play outside in the street, but nowadays I wouldn't let my kids or even my dog out front. Bullets don't care what color you are, where you're from and even how old you are. It's pretty bad when you don't walk to the store without something to keep you safe. I've seen my own family killed in parks, and in the streets. These are the reasons I'm looking to buy a house away from here where I know my family will be safe
I'm from Stockton and grew up in Central Stockton and lived out at Luis Park so I understand the 90's gang era but today there are not much left in such gangs ! Now there is clicks and Some old neighborhoods have youngsters OG'Z kids out in the neighborhood but nothing like the 90's - early 2000's .
Hi Fred, I really appreciate taking the time to watch the documentary and for the feedback. While gang violence has dropped, Stockton PD still attributes 70 percent of the city's violent crime to gangs, and with homicides again on the rise, I'd say that's still pretty bad. Feel free to drop me a line at madams@abc10.com if you'd like to chat more.

I’ve lived in Modesto my whole life pretty much and for some reason I was always scared to be in Stockton at night. Even though Modesto has it’s rough spots to I didn’t feel that afraid ... maybe it was all the stories of Stockton when I was growing up
I was livin all over Stockton for years representing Modesto and comin from Airport District and Crows Landing road area of Modesto during the Norte vs Sur years , Stockton didn’t seem that different to me, I’ve been around all kinds of violence in Modesto, I’d actually say at least Stockton police respond to shootings consistently, in Modesto so many gunfire injuries n shoot8ngs go unreported
Yes unfortunately many surrounding cities fear Stockton. There are some awesome kids and adults in Stockton so it is so sad that all of that is overlooked. The problem is the City at large not addressing these kids and helping more with programs. I am a retired teacher from Stockton and so proud of so many of the kids I knew working for SUSD. Even the troubled teens has a heart and I sure pray for them.
As far as I know, the three cities on the West Coast with the most gang violence are Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Stockton If it is out of control, call him the national guard put them in the areas that are most concerning.
J B , not me and my Asian friends. We saw the suffering side of gang. All of us focus on education and sports when we were young. Now most of us have great jobs and beautiful family. Happiness
I was born n Stockton n 1985, still here, never been n trouble with the law, or assaulted by gang members. Yes we have a higher crime rate. But trouble don't just come 2 u. U have 2 be trying 2 reach out for trouble, for whatever your reason.
Elevated Status It is good, as you said, that kids are told good things. Something like: “You’re going to be a great doctor when you grow up.” Or, “Wow, son! You can draw very well. You should be an artist!” This helps drive motivation to kids and the next time their in school, they will consider that thought, even throughout many hardships. Read Born to Win. It’s a great book explaining various cases and studies about the minds of humans.
Hi Life Yang, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch the documentary, and for your insight. While it's true that most people looking for trouble will find it, I can speak from experience and say I've been a victim of property crime in Stockton and certainly wasn't looking for it. There are all kinds of experiences, and Efrain's story is just one of hundreds.
@@miguelconstantino-guzman7957 Very true. I was involved with gangs when I was a teenager. Didn't come from a poor family or a single parent household like some. Dad was working hard every day and was barely home. Mom supported me but was verbally and physically abusive. But all it takes is for a parent to say something good to change a youths perspective. I was deep into the gangs but always did well in school for some reason. Never ditched class and barely ever turn in late homework. I was a 3.8 GPA student. Never told anyone including my family how well I was doing in school because it didn't seem like it mattered. One day my dad found my report card and surprisingly commented that I was a very good student with good grades and for me to keep it up. That day, something struck me. Hearing those words made me realized that I can do more and can become somebody in life. It gave me hope. It gave me encouragement.
Much love and respect for Stockton. It’s where I started to sing at and I never had a problem with nobody I feel like if you mind you’re own business nobody bothers you.
Driven up and down downtown Stockton for months for my work. The homeless problem was the worst I've ever seen in a city. Abandoned and burned down buildings with homeless people either down on their luck or just not all there mentally. Addicts lining up at methadone clinics on N California and N El Dorado and then wandering around the streets. I've never had an issue with the gangs or the homeless, just mind your own business and carry on. Though, there are instances of violence in areas I would deliver. Some people getting shot dead in neighborhoods I had just gone through throughout the weeks.
I used to run a delivery route in Stockton, some areas you just don’t hang around. Stockton had some very dangerous areas. I also ran into the Oakland rail yard bad area, and delivered in Sacramento and throw a dart at a L.A. map but I remember Long Beach being particularly bad. I lived in Santa Barbara which in some areas wasn’t any cake walk either 😮
I’m from Sac and I can tell u, Stockton is a very dark city. Literally hardly any street lights on. I can see how u can shoot someone out there and get away with it.
Mom,s is working hard to give you life, and you are going to join a gang, for all her efforts to keep you out of a gang.... selfish, you're very selfish. You HAVE choices 🤔
they only talked about the bad parts of stockton (especially downtown) i’ve grown up here and the worst thing that’s happened was a homeless person killing his dog. if your gonna say stuff about a place make sure you include all parts
I've always known it as "Scrompton" because of the poverty, violence, and drugs. My entire family died in Stockton in 1977 when I was just 2 years old, my aunt was murdered by the notorious Speed Freak Killers, so I know how bad it has gotten just since 1985.
I rode my bike all over stockton when I was younger never ran into any problems but the presence is there but they don't bother you unless you go looking for trouble

I lived in Stockton my whole life and to this day I’m still living here and I’m Hispanic my self
Congratulations
We need part 2 of this
I was born and raised in Stockton.
I know this post is a year old, but oh my gosh I’m so sorry your family had to endure that. 💙
Hi Robyn! Cheryl from 49 drug. We closed 6 years ago. I'm still in Stockton, retired. Hope you're doing well
I lived in Stockton for 10 years , I was never part of a gang , I had no parents or family members, I was own my owner I never own a gun .
Downtown, hammer ln, and delta college, non of those places are even close to each other. Definitely not the same hood.
Yeah lol I was thinking the same thing. Hammerlane or pacific Ave by delta college is not downtown
I love my city. This piece was AMAZING! This is the real Stockton, underneath everything there is HOPE! 209 all day man.
Finally someone is trying to help us. We are so grateful.
I live in Stockton for 24 years and yes it ghetto crazy just try to ignore going to ghetto places and dont go out at night.
I wonder what the point of view from a young boy in a civil war torn third world country would say about these gang members.
lol they will think it is all so corny 😂.. little kids walking around with aks in those countries
Not-inThisLife the comparison is moronic.

I live in Stockton with my mom and when we hear gun shots we don't even flinch
U need better reflexes.
Ong 😂😂😂 i don't flinch either
I grew up without a father but never crossed my mind to get into crime...im tired of hearing those excuses
rock n roll did you have 10 brothers and sisters too ?
@Terry Boragard get lost libtard
Everyone is different. We should all understand to accept that.
Im tired of excuses too but theres always more info we dont know..so i shall not judge
It's all mentally tough
That's right Efrain, Keep on keeping on brother.
Stockton used to be considered one of "America's Cities".
ITS A CHOICE! I've lived here my entire life and I've never assimilated to the culture that exists in this city. Stop perpetuating the stereotype and get educated so that gangs aren't your "only option"
hamsterduh you probably never worked for a thing in your life
I grew up in Stockton too. No. You obviously didn't go through what we went through so don't speak on it.
your vocab is too smart to be commenting about this video on youtube. not everyone is fortunate to be educated rso well
This man is an inspiration. We gotta get young men mentors much sooner before they turn to a life of crime.
I moved there when my oldest son was going into 2nd grade. I was warned by a fellow back to school shopper, not to pick the gang colors for my child’s shirts. Eventually, I got my family out of there. Really bad place.
I wandered into Stockton looking for my best friend who just got out of prison never having had been there before and it was wild, found him under the bridge near the train yard, the tweaker king down there was actually a very nice guy, helped me go through everywhere trying to find him
Drinking game: drink every time show mentions not having a father.
Thanks for helping me end up in the emergency room last night.
Scott Scotsman i’m still waiting for my dad to come back from the store. it’s been 20 years
@@jayperez9179 maybe he's in prison.
Scott Scotsman it’s a joke.
Sad but true.
Moral of the story, father's dont disregard our children, they do hurt and they will go try to seek for that affection else where. Peace and love.
Truth.
U from stoccton show em fools
Bro you lived in Stockton and now you live in Reno Nevada and you're getting bullied? It's like if you're getting bullied by Mickey mouse and his possy lol
I never heard of Stockton till Nate Diaz talked about it
Hi Chicago Street, thanks for checking out the doc.
@James Ferry obviously u cared u comment on it.🤭🤪😂🤣
@James Ferry Get off this board you hapless Incel.
Vice already did something on tbe meth epidemic in fresno
Respect ✊ keep it up my bro. Great documentary very insightful. Amen
I grew up in Stockton for 12 years and it's crazy how the gangs took over alot of kids in my old highschool. I've lost a few friends because of it
That's awesome 👍 you're a work in progress
Just moved from Louisiana to Stockton a month ago, I love here already
Cool
I been to Louisiana and love to live there. Duck dynasty lives there lol
💯 Facts
I grew up here my dad made sure I never went down a bad path
Great dad
I'm proud of you bro I 100% relate bro I was born in the bay area but raised out here in the 209
Born and raised in Stockton and gang members come in all races.
Womp womp
Amen!
@@michaeladams4960 I still have yet to hear from you! If you want to be a part of Stockton History and get inside interviews and such I would advise to get in touch with me! I could always have 209 times or another news broadcast cover this event but since you had reached out I will give you the first dibs!
@East Bay 925 X4 and ya stay killing each other's #facts
East Bay 925 X4 it’s not rare in stockton tho.
also have you heard of Oakland California?
@@kartoonlawrence7150 they respond to all those shootings because in stockton, gun violence is out of control.
I don't think this Gang stuff will ever end. Unfortunately. It's still spreading at a rapid rate.
Good luck man! I wish you much success. It's good to have a real Stockton resident stand up.
As far as I know, the three cities on the West Coast with the most gang violence are Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Stockton If it is out of control, call him the national guard put them in the areas that are most concerning.
I live in North Stockton and literally everyone Asian at my school is a Crip
Do u know what awol is?
@chonburi11 yessir cuz

When I was growing up there was almost no economic infrastructure other than selling dope, how is the average young person supposed to earn money?
I was born n Stockton n 1985, still here, never been n trouble with the law, or assaulted by gang members. Yes we have a higher crime rate. But trouble don't just come 2 u. U have 2 be trying 2 reach out for trouble, for whatever your reason.
Elevated Status I just made a comment that clearly negates statistics. I am such a hypocrite. We do it once in a while...
Elevated Status ...and you are right. Statistics are useful for predicting a potential cause. Great mind dude!
Growing up in Lodi I remember the 2 times I went to Stockton for a high school party. They had a shooting and 1 of them 2 teens got killed
I love Stockton. I wish I could bring something to it.
Try to work for the kids and try to help. That's what I'm trying to do as a future counselor.
Bring a nuke, and detonate it.

When you say Stockton , first thing jump in my mind is the Diaz brothers
Much love and respect for Stockton. It’s where I started to sing at and I never had a problem with nobody I feel like if you mind you’re own business nobody bothers you.
straight out of chicago here at age of 50. one advice move out of your circle.
Why is ABC10 so obsessed with stockton? It's not the best but it sure isnt as bad as they make it.
Cause they are in the process of gentrification thats why
yeah but not Oakland not in Oakland I don't understand Oakland is pretty bad as well I don't understand?
Lived here for almost 2 decades, grew up without a father. Thankfully I never did drugs or got involved with gangs.
Stockton gets a bad view it isn’t all like this
well maybe they should try bringing businesses there and more opportunities, just looking at downtown Stockton there doesn't seem to be much of that

Homeless people is the bigger problem
Mom,s is working hard to give you life, and you are going to join a gang, for all her efforts to keep you out of a gang.... selfish, you're very selfish. You HAVE choices 🤔
Tom's market 👍 I pass bye that purple lowrider to get to the liquor store on California 😂
You're too young to be drinking mija
The liquor store Cal Park? Is that still there???
From Stockton
they only talked about the bad parts of stockton (especially downtown) i’ve grown up here and the worst thing that’s happened was a homeless person killing his dog. if your gonna say stuff about a place make sure you include all parts
Lol u most likely grew up in brookside then.
Toto 1 i grew up near edison
I've always known it as "Scrompton" because of the poverty, violence, and drugs. My entire family died in Stockton in 1977 when I was just 2 years old, my aunt was murdered by the notorious Speed Freak Killers, so I know how bad it has gotten just since 1985.

O_o I live Stockton and my teacher told us that there was a lot gangs in the area. I never thought a lot about the " bang bang " noise in my neighborhood because to me it was normal I guess. I never thought how different Stockton was from other cities I guess I never noticed it. I don't see a future for Stockton but I don't see any future for me and kids in Stockton.
