Eating the $29 Hot Dog from Mischa. The Most Expensive Hot Dog NYC. Is it Worth It?

- I eat at and review Mischa and their $29 hot dog. The restaurant is located in Midtown, Manhattan of New York City. Mischa serves innovative new American cuisine, but they’re most famous for their hot dog, which might be the best in the city. I decide if the dish is worth the costly price tag.

Outstanding, 'back to earth' presentation in the early stages our current Holiday Madness!!!
Perfect timing to sneak in a mad craving while we've got more holiday feasts coming!
Cheers!
Absolutely! Cheers!
Only in NYC can someone sell a hot dog for 29 bucks and be taken seriously. James bringin the goods from the most silly priced hot dog in the USA, to the best steak deal in NYC. This chef/owner should slap a few flecks of gold on the dog and up the price to 529 bucks. Cheers James
Haha! Cheers! Thank you!
I get a feeling it's a kielbasa on a roll you can find in some specialty bakery.
@@Drownedinblood yes but what most people are forgetting is the cost of the fancy location.
becasue, street hot dogs, are the cheapest meat, bulked up with salt and msg and sodium benzoate and corn filler.
The bread is loaded with sugar and coloring and rising agents and is mostly air and preservatives.
This is a 100% real meat, not preservative hot dog with real fresh baked bread, and the condiments are great. You get chilli and Kimchi !
A chilli dog is what 6-8 US ? This thing gives you as much meat as 2 street hot dogs.
Honestly , 30 bucks vs 12 , for what you are getting, is actually a fair price.
this hotdog is actually healthy !
Street Hot Dog 🌭 vender’s in Manhattan will certainly try this next 🤣🤣🤣
James, your channel has become the superior culinary guide to NYC, and each and every review has made me want to go back more and more. I guarantee you that soon your channel will blow up and you will be made a local eats celebrity. Another awesome review! Good luck.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the support!
The prix fixe is a good deal if you are with another person. I would have gone for the lobster roll myself. Also a reminder that Costco has a hot dog & soda for $1.50!
Yeah, if I wasn't intent on getting the hot dog, I would've gotten the lobster roll as well. Indeed, you can't beat Costco's deal!
Were you familiar with Hot Doug’s in Chicago? Doug Sohn was selling upscale dogs in Chicago two decades ago, albeit without the $29 price point - I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Mischa got inspired by “pioneer” Doug… Best Wishes!
I have been to Hot Doug's and it was amazing! During the weeks before it closed, I took a day off work and waited hours in line to eat there. I loved it!
Again, you are so unfailing polite to respond & engage with us all. God's speed! Thank you for your kind & considerate response. I do truly appreciate it!!!
I always try my best to do so. I really appreciate all the support.
As always James a comprehensive and enjoyable review. Given your wealth of experience in dining in NYC, you might want to consider publishing a list of quality and value, so people can pick their appropriate price point. Excellent video, hope you had a nice Thanksgiving.
Thank you so much! I hope that you had a great holiday as well.
He’s not gonna do it, Kevin
The price fixe definitely gave you a more rounded out meal and the $42 price tag is a lot more "reasonable". I think the salad needed something savory like crispy bacon bits or crisp chicken skin/salmon skin/other crispies. By the way i enjoyed the review and in context, a good choice. Thank you!
Thank you! Yeah, some bacon bits on that salad would've tasted amazing!
In no world is $42 acceptable for a hot dog 3 course meal, no matter how good the hot dog tastes.
Nicely phrased.
@Superbustr i was trying to be subtle and still ironic under the circumstances by using quote marks around the word "reasonable." And hoping other viewers would catch what I meant.
@@tomawen5916 Thanks for the grammar lesson. I've never used quotation marks in the way you have.
happy thanksgiving&christmas! will make sure to add to my bucket list when I go to new york in the future
Thank you! Happy holidays as well!
Only in the US people would be curious enough to pay about 30 dollars for a hotdog 🤣
For real. It's like the more these places charge, everyone's just obsessed with trying it. Sad really. Next up: $1,000,000 pizza slice!
People also pay a thousand dollars for a steak at Salt Bae’s restaurant.

I think I would cut the hot dog sandwiche in half and then eat it.
Thanks for watching!
@@LMays-cu2hp Yeah, I bet a lot of people do that. It's a pretty large sandwich.
You are welcome. It looked very nice of a meal!! It did!! ☺
That is a delicious looking hot dog! Those toppings are incredible, too.
Great review!
Thank you! Yeah, it was delicious!
Great video James... Keep it up!!
Thank you!
It’s kind of funny that a 3 star Michelin chef is making hot dogs. Ha Ha! I would have thought your salad could have come with some toast points, crackers or hot rolls but perhaps they knew the Hot dog and bun would be way to much for most people. I agree with you about the crime brûlée needing more crackle. That is the charm of ordering crime brûlée as it’s fun to crack the caramelized toping and eat it with the creamer pudding below it. Ok confession time. I am the weirdo that eats hot dogs with mayo and a tiny bit of mustard unless it’s a Coney Island dog from Detroit, Michigan. (Used to live in Michigan) Thanks for the video! Loved it.
Thanks for watching! There's no wrong way to eat a hot dog, and I also really enjoy a Coney Island dog.
That doesn't sound so weird. I avoid katsup 😂 and dodgy nacho cheese or chili.
That meal looked great.. but Im more concerned with a foodie drinking Starbucks than spending 29 dollars on a hot dog 😂 so much better coffee everywhere...
Haha! I know what you mean, but I had a Starbucks gift card, and I wanted to save a little money. Especially after I just spent $29 on a hot dog.
Your insightful narration along with your sense of humour (Canadian spelling) has earned yourself a subscriber.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
This channel is actually super great nyc content, 10/10 review
Thank you so much!
All the toppings make it more like an adventure.. it was unique. The whole thing is probably no more ridiculous than some of the deli sandwiches in NYC etc.
That's true. There are definitely plenty of other costly sandwiches in NYC.
In honor of this, I'm going to get some generic hotdogs from the store, make some greek hotdog sauce, chop up some kimchi, open up a jar of old godmother chili flakes, and maybe get some pimento cheese. I'll then call it a de-spacially-contextuallized $29 hotdog to capture the narrative of the fine dining experience and then eat it in the comfort of my home.
It’s kosher , it must cost 30$😂
Just found your channel in the last few days and enjoying your content and this hot dog tho pricey looks delicious! Thanks
Thanks for the support!
Truly a unique hotdog, great video!! Also the song you used for this video is a bop 🔥

Thanks for taking this risk and letting us see the details. I also would balk, initially, at the price of this dog. however, considering that it was a $42 special, you picked well. Happy digesting! Ciao.
Thank you! Yeah, getting the hot dog with the special menu is the way to go.
I love the review and curious to try one of the most expensive hotdogs in NY.
Thank you! It's definitely worth a try!
Great review!

At least it appeared to be a hearty hotdog for that price!
It was definitely larger than the average hot dog.

Gimmick -- this one is just robbing you.
Definitely expensive for a hotdog but definitely worth it when its the best you've ever had. It did look tasty and hot brisket Chili sounds good. Another great video James
Thank you! Yeah, it was expensive, but it was at least memorable and delicious.
I do so enjoy seeing you consume food in various establishments. Long days and pleasant nights to you.

Looking forward to your Greenpoint food reviews . Amber steak house and Greenpoint fish and lobster are the two I am interested in . Born in the 50’s in Greenpoint. My mom operated a hair salon next to the 3 Decker restaurant on Manhattan Av . Will be visiting in May of 24 . I can’t believe the transformation of my old neighborhood. I am of polish descent. Best hot dog is from the umbrella carts . When I was a kid 2 dogs for quarter. Thanks again
Thanks for watching! Yeah, Greenpoint is a neighborhood that has experienced a ton of change. There's a lot of great places to eat there.
Good review James. I still think the best dogs are definitely Chicago hot dogs. Absolutely classic!
Thank you! Yeah, as someone who used to live in Chicago, their hot dogs are still among my favorites.
Next level dog hands down. Rutt’s Hut in Clifton NJ. Far different atmosphere, but amazing food and experience. If you’re ever in Jersey.
Thanks for the recommendation. Someone else mentioned that place too. I'll definitely have to check it out sometime.
Jersey food crawl episode. Breakfast at Tic Tok diner, lunch at Rutt’s and dinner at Steve’s Sizzling Streaks. All within 5 miles of each other. All legendary food spots. My can’t miss go too’s. Enjoy your videos. Very well done. 👍

While I know that you now have a huge following & my comments may not be important, but I still enjoyed your reviews. You are unfailing polite & considerate, but I truly cannot appreciate a $29 hot dog under any circumstances. But, I do trust your culinary opinions & appreciate your wonderful offerings. Yes, I hate "skinny people", but I know that you are the "real deal". Thank you for sharing this post! This is Peter writing; out!
Thank you so much! Every person's comments are important to me. I really appreciate the support. Yeah, it's a crazy price. Even though it was really good and unique, one can also get a lot of great hot dogs for much less.
Gorgeously shot, and a really enjoyable review. $29 seems a lot for a hot dog, but not a lot for a memorable experience.
Thank you! Yeah, it was expensive, but that's one hot dog that I'll never forget.
Great review I have to try it now. Does Misha serve special all day or just lunch? I only get Sunday off if no dinner hot dog
Thank you! Unfortunately, I think they only have the special during lunch.
@@Jamesnu what about dinner just dog
When you think about it, if the meat was served differently or in a different shape, there wouldn’t be much shock value to it. Like every fine dining establishments, it’s all about the experience and the flavors and textures you’re experiencing for the first time.
That's a great point!
People should treat themselves once or twice a year to stuff like this just to see if there's something to it. The condiment tray on top of a perfectly prepared dog might spark your own kitchen concotions.
Indeed! Trying stuff like this every once in awhile makes dining exciting.
This!
I think for the 3 course fixed menu it actually is better value, but the hot dog really did look worth it. The condiments & quality of it I think for sure elevated it. It looked delicious❤️.
I am working my way through your channel and its excellent work. Love all the way in England, UK🇬🇧👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks for watching! Yeah, the 3 course menu is the way to go, but the hot dog, even on its own, was really good!
For sure, it looked like every bite was magic!
I just thought that I would share something about me…
1) I have had a painting on my wall of New York since I was 19yrs old & always wanted to go.
2) I love watching Michelin Star restaurants, or little hidden gem restaurants, while eating something delicious. Does anybody else do this? I just love everything about taking food to another level❤️
Anybody who see’s this, whats something cool about your life/food? 💐
@lauj888 Nice! Food is one of my favorite things to talk about as well from fancy Michelin starred restaurants to humble establishments. I hope that you get the chance to visit New York!
Thank you, I would for sure love to visit New York, just never got around to it.
Your reviews are great, and I will continue to watch😊👏🏼
@@lauj888 Thank you! I appreciate it!
Not really a hot dog fan but great review. I should probably check it out with my friends. Also if you ever have a chance come check out Al Coro :) (where Del Posto used to be). I don’t know if you’ve heard but we’re unfortunately closing after Christmas. We were bought by Tao so we’ll see what gunna happen lol. it’s a bit expensive. I know we aren’t really “friends”, though I love your vids and am a fan. If you do happen to book a Resy feel free to say Lee (my name haha) referred you. The Menu is online so you can also check before you sit down. Love the video :)
Thank you! Yeah, I heard that Al Coro is closing. It's a shame. I wish that I had the chance to visit, but right now it's a bit costly for me.
That meal looked pretty darn good, and the restaurant was quite lovely. Here’s a book recommendation: The Spy and The Traitor by Ben MacIntyre. It’s an exceptional nonfiction story. Have you ever read it?
No, I haven't read that one yet, but I appreciate the recommendation!
Remember the $5 shake in Pulp Fiction? It legit seemed crazy at the time but now a $5 shake would be a bargain.
Exactly!
same here in zürich. we have a 100Sfr Döner kebab. made waves in the newspaper now they are always full
A price like that definitely grabs attention.
If somebody served this hot dog on a paper plate at a cookout or something nobody would think it's all that amazing but because it's at some snobby restaurant in New York and they put it in a fancy setting with a nice white plate on a clean nice table suddenly it's worth $30
That did look very good, all the beautiful condiments and it was really nice and substantial. Jay Rayner is great, I read his reviews in the Guardian newspaper.
It was really good! I agree! That was the first time that I've read anything by Jay Rayner and I really enjoyed his writing.
What do you use for your camera gimbal/mount if anything?
When I'm talking to the camera, I use a Joby Gorillapod, but when I'm in the restaurant, I just place my camera on the table and prop it up with my phone to give it an angle.
Smart the way you handled each condiments instead of applying everything in the dog
Thank you. Yeah, I think it was the best way to get the full experience with the hot dog.
My office before retirement was close to there. Frankly it would still fit into my per diam as you had it. Next trip for sure.
I hope you enjoy it on your next visit.
Great video 👍👍I would at least try it once pretty pricey 😀
Thank you! Yeah, I bet most go for it just once to try it, but it was very good!
The best sausage I EVER had was in a bar in Switzerland at the top of a mountain near Davros

A $29 hot dog is an insult to humanity. 😢
Enjoy your lukewarm water street dog in the cold and rain and noise.
45 Bucks for a quality dog, condiments, salad and desert in a nice establishment in NYC is not crazy, especially with cost of living being out of control. I totally agree with him you would only eat it once or occasionally but it is not as outrageous as some here believe.
Indeed!
Nice vid! Where are you from btw, can't place the accent, subtle as it is😅

Awesome review. So pleased to learn that you enjoyed the presentation and the meal. I adore elevating standards to exclusives. Thanks again for a great and honest review....and right near my home! Loving the scruff by the way.
Thank you! Yeah, I really appreciate when a restaurant takes a simple dish and can reinterpret it in a new way.
We will not rest until you go to Foxface Natural!!!!
I'll get there eventually. I have a long list of restaurants to visit.
I luv how he did it every bite was different. That's the way I would have done it.

That salad looked pretty good to me, and the condiments look incredible. You have made me curious if there is a difference between a hot dog and a sausage on a bun (beyond the hot dog/sandwich question). Creme Brulee looked average. Great review!
Thank you! Yeah, besides the hot dog, it was a great meal overall.
What about a hot dog from a can on white bread?
Try the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant in Stafford, NY on Rt.5 between Buffalo and Rochester. They serve the most Prime Rib in NYS. And have for decades!! Its a well kept secret! Dont tell your friends!
😊❤
Nice! That sounds like a great place! Thanks for the recommendation!
Pretty pricey especially since I started with Oscar Meyer and Orange Julius. But since you can turn it into a chill cheese spicy bacon dog I'd try it
Yeah, the variety of condiments were really unique!
Best hot dog? Top Dog in Berkeley , Ca. Has not changed in the 58 years since I had my first one. Simply the best. But then again I haven't been to Mischa'.
Nice! I'll keep that restaurant in mind if I'm ever in Berkeley.
At first I balked at the price, but then taking into account it's quality - as you attest - the bun, condiments, and that it was a sit down meal in pleasant settings, and of course it's in midtown where the price of everything is over the top, I could see myself shelling out a few bucks for it. The entire package of appetizer, the dog, and dessert for $45 seem almost reasonable, all things considered.
Yeah, getting the hot dog with the special lunch menu is really the way to go.
The tip is the killer. I live in Tokyo and I love that there is no tip at a restaurant and the service is usually very good. I believe no tipping in Europe last time I was there but yeah, last time I was in NY that tipping thing left an impression.
Yeah, the tipping is definitely pretty high here.
Come to switzerland. In zürich it is a average price for a dish like this. Here u can also pay 40 $ for a hambirger
Yeah, I've heard it's expensive there.
It looks pretty solid. I’d try it once.
It's definitely exciting to try.
I like & relate to this guy’s food passion butting up against budget concerns (not that a $30 dog’s a Flying Wallendas feat), but he makes this identical expression after almost every bite in every video of his I’ve seen: 7:22 👀 🤔🤷♂️
It’s either well rehearsed or his own B-roll loop-either way, I hope he can give a more organic, less repetitive carbon copy mug so we can get TRUE & nuanced (varied) reactions. I’ll keep 👍ing and watching. ✌️
For $29 at Costco food court, you could've got nineteen 1/4lb+ all beef hot dogs & 19 twenty ounce refillable drinks to wash em down with
The Costco hotdog is legendary!
If you did a blindfold taste test I bet the two-dollar hot dog at Costco would win
Okay 👍🤣🤣🤣 and you get a COKE😅
Rutt's Hut in Clifton,NJ. Your content is like UA Eats.
I haven't been there yet. Thanks for the recommendation!
Its not a $29 hot dog because its a superior and quality hot dog with the best ingredients. Its $29 because its NYC. A closet sized apartment is gonna run you $3K a month.
It looks totally worth it to me. It looks like an amazing quality sausage and this is coming from a German.
It was definitely a great sausage!
People have to come up with some philosophical double talk to justify a $29 hotdog 😂
Hi James,
I was wondering how you do your camera set ups because I usually use my iPhone. What I’m probably gonna do is since I want to use my Sony a 6400, for cinematography shots with it, but then use my iPhone to record my review dialogue.
I think the issue is that if you use your camera, I’ve been told by some restaurants to put it away or it looks ridiculous to go to a place and do a food review with a camera set up. I would like the cell phone because it’s more discreet.
And I’m very sure you probably into places where people are respectful of what you’re doing with your camera, and then there’s some places where people are just not accepting.
I think I have a good idea where to avoid that issue. Just take photos with my camera or do some B roll shots with cinematography, and then use my iPhone to record my review so that way people are not intimidated by the camcorder.
And then there’s also that fear of you bringing a $1600 camera or higher into a restaurant, somebody can always walk up and steal it
Yeah, I know what you mean. It can be awkward filming in some restaurants.
My setup is pretty simple. I prop up my camera by using my phone as a small wedge to get a good angle and film myself that way. I don't even attach the microphone because most of the time I just do voice overs later. I always try to be as discrete as possible.
Dadgummit James! Now I want to steam some Bradwurst and try a dog like that at home.
Haha! Go for it!
OK, that looks pretty damn good, I would!
It was awesome!
30$ sounds crazy but a hot dog and a coke will be about 12$ in California.
As I remember Japadog in Vancouver Canada was expensive too...
Yeah, NYC isn't the only place with expensive hot dogs.

It was a great lunch!
That actually looks very tasty and justifiable price.

The best hot dog I’ve ever had was free … but. You did this one right. Tossed salad. A delicious wiener in a bun and something sweet afterwards or a cocktail thanks for posting 😊👍🏻
Free is always good! Thanks for watching!
Being one who remembers $0.15 hot dogs, there is no way you are going to convince me that $29. for a hot dog can be justified. P.T. Barnum said it a long time ago. Oh and the bun is too small for the hot dog. Come on for $1.50 Costco gives you a full-size roll and a soft-drink.
My favorite way to eat a hot dog is with kimchi. Glad I’m not the only one.

@@Jamesnu I make home-made Caesar salad and when I see it in a restaurant, I try it. I have only ever had a couple really good, real Caesar salads. Paired with a hotdog and crème brûlée? Brilliant
If, you had to bake your own bread, and make that jumbo sausage with brisket , and make kimchi and chilli to go along with it, this would still cost you about 10-15 dollars to make just one. And then you've got to bill for labour.
There's definitely a lot that went into creating this hot dog.
matzo ball soup mightve been better IMHO. But that lunch prix fixe does sound like a good deal. Not surprised you enjoyed the dessert. the chef is a dessert wizard.
